Match Report

Limavady v Academy

Saturday, 13th October 2018

Limavady welcomed Academy to the John Hunter Memorial Grounds this week. As the spoils were shared last year between these two sides this was always going to be a closely fought affair. With Limavady unbeaten this season they were keen to keep this run going, however Saturday turned out to be a bad day at the office. Several factors were to contribute to a lack lustre performance from the home side, mainly an awful day weather wise, a bad injury to an Academy back row forward which resulted in play having to be suspended for a lengthy period of time and then in order to get the game completed ,play had to be transferred to the “far pitch”, a smaller pitch which curtailed Limavady’s expansive game. Limavady would also lose Mark Woods and Luke Faulkner to bad injuries which would again disrupt their flow.

Having said all that Academy were the better team on the day. They had to play in the same horrible conditions and suffered a serious injury of their own. They came with a game plan to contain Limavady and their front five were very much to the fore. They retained the ball better than Limavady did, even in the wet conditions. By the end of the first half Limavady were lucky to be only eight points adrift, Academy having missed three very kickable opportunities. Their points came from a penalty and a push over try following a five metre scrum.

The second half only saw one try when, after the best move of the game, Daniel Irvine crossed the line to touch down. This set up a tense finish when Limavady tried to muster up another score however Academy’s defence held firm.

Final score : Limavady 5. Academy 8

Best wishes to all three players injured today and hopefully each will make a speedy recovery. For Limavady next week sees Ballynahinch 2s come to Limavady for the Quarter Final of the Millar McCall Wylie Junior Cup. This will be another very tough encounter against the second string of a leading club in Ulster. A big support would be appreciated to spur the home side on, kick off 2.30
