My Life on the Line: Everything you didn’t know you needed to know about being an assistant referee by Gavin Muge

They come out of the football stadium tunnel first, but all eyes are on the well-paid athletes behind them. No one pays the referee or the referee’s assistants any attention – until they make a mistake. Then all hell breaks loose. They can’t explain – or defend themselves against the crowd’s abuse. Gavin Muge threads an entertaining personal football memoir together with his own attempts to scale the peak of the professional game as a match official. His football life has led to encounters with a cast of stars from Gary Lineker to Paul Gascoigne, Arsene Wenger and Roy Keane. He officiated at the infamous Riot of Upton Park in 2009 and has witnessed many examples of the darker side of the game. Gavin has also shared the excitement and the pain of the average football supporter and now has the experience to try to make sense of it all in My Life on the Line. See if you agree with him! And pit your knowledge against Gavin’s with the book’s Chapter Challenges and his Quiz.

Most of the jewellery at Serge DeNimes is made from 925 Sterling Silver, however this bangle is made from 990 due to the flexibility of the material. PSYCHO SHOWER SCENE VOTED MOST ICONIC BATHROOM MOMENT IN CINEMA HISTORY

• Marion Crane’s murder in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho voted most memorable bathroom scene from film or television
• Other memorable moments include Marilyn Monroe’s ice bath in The Seven Year Itch, and Julia Roberts’ bubble bath in Pretty Woman
• Study carried out by luxury bathing and skincare brand fenjal to celebrate its 60th anniversary

The ‘shower scene’ in classic thriller Psycho has been voted the most memorable bathroom scene in film or television history, according to new national research.

The survey, carried out by luxury bathing and skincare brand fenjal, asked participants to name the most iconic bathroom scenes from the big and small screens.

Marion Crane’s murder scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s seminal thriller took top spot with 16% of the vote, closely followed by Allie Hamilton’s bath scene in romantic drama The Notebook (13%).

Julia Roberts’ bubble bath in Pretty Woman, Elizabeth Taylor’s lotus flower bath in Cleopatra, and Marilyn Monroe’s ice bath in The Seven Year Itch all took an 11% share of the public vote.

Elsewhere, Tony Montana’s lavish bubble bath in Scarface took 4% of the vote, while the prefects’ bathroom scene from Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire was selected 3% of people.

fenjal also quizzed the nation on what makes the perfect bath, as part of the brand’s 60thanniversary celebrations.

Nearly half of people (49%) believe temperature is the most important element when it comes to running the perfect bath, with a third (33%) saying bubbles are the key to ultimate relaxation.

Elsewhere, the study found Brits prefer baths to showers. Over half of respondents (52%) opt for the tub, compared to around three in ten (31%) preferring a shower, while 16% do not have a preference.

Joanne Ward, Commercial Manager for fenjal, said: “There are so many iconic bathroom moments across film and tv – and today we have found the British public’s definitive favourite.

“Often regarded as one of the best films ever, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is a bonafide classic. Despite being made in the 1960s, the film holds up, and the shower scene, with its oft-imitated soundtrack, is as iconic and scary as ever.

“For less spooky bathroom scenes, Julia Roberts bubble bath in Pretty Woman and Elizabeth Taylor’s lotus flower bath in Cleopatra are firm favourites. To recreate these relaxing soaks, you need to consider the water temperature, plus add bubble bath, oils, or salts.”

In celebration of its diamond anniversary, fenjal is giving away two Monica Vinader Gold Diamond Necklaces.

fenjal has been on a mission since 1962 to put smiles on women’s faces – and now one lucky winner can do the same thing, as they keep one necklace and gift another to a loved one.

Deer-ly beloved pint returns…
Rocking Rudolph Ale announces Christmas comeback with Macmillan Cancer Support donation

Rocking Rudolph Ale is back for the festive season, it has been announced, and is celebrating with a charity donation.

The full-bodied 4.2% Christmas ale, which is brewed by Greene King, will be available throughout November and December in a number of UK venues.

As part of its return, Greene King Brewery will give 5p from every pint of the ale sold to Macmillan Cancer Support.

A popular festive drink, Rocking Rudolph Ale deer-livers a taste of Christmas cheer via its fruity and toffee-malt notes, with a crisp bitter finish.

The treasured ale is also known for its eye-catching flashing hand pull – which features Rudolph’s iconic red nose.

Money raised from sales of Rocking Rudolph Ale will help Macmillan Cancer Support continue to provide vital care and assistance to people living with cancer.

This marks the latest step in a ten-year partnership between Greene King and the national cancer charity. To date, the UK’s leading pub company and brewer has raised over £13 million for Macmillan as the charity’s top employee fundraising corporate partner.

Jack Palmer, Head Brewer at Greene King Brewery, said: “We are delighted to announce Rocking Rudolph, and its memorable flashing hand pull, is back!

“This year, we are proud to be supporting Macmillan with a donation from every festive pint.

“Christmas is about coming together and celebrating. Now, guests can enjoy a pint of Rocking Rudolph with their loved ones, knowing they are also contributing to an important cause.”

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for Rudolph’s red nose and flashing hand pull, next time you visit the bar!

But don’t think it’s that easy! When the switch die lands on “switch” you’ll be changing decks with your opponents. There is also the possibility of being ‘blocked’ by your opponents if they decide to use the block chip! To win the game you need to be the first player to remove all 16 cards from your deck!

The ultimate Christmas gift for fitness enthusiasts – a home gym that turns into a bed.
Now that homes have become our everything – work, rest and play – PIVOT provides a space-saving solution for anyone who enjoys strength training and keeping in shape but also wants a chic, minimalist home décor.
Founded by two British entrepreneurs, Colin and Patricia Montgomery, PIVOT was born and bred in the UK (manufactured in Gateshead) through successful crowdfunding but is already disrupting the home fitness market across the globe with a loyal following emerging in the US. A full home-gym solution, with weight-bearing capability in excess of 300kg, PIVOT recreates the gym in the comfort of a bedroom. Once workout mode is completed, the gym seamlessly converts into a regular bed (standard double up to king) that provides additional durability for sleep with a steel frame that maintains its form and provides ergonomic support.
This Christmas, PIVOT is the big-ticket gift that offers a lifetime of training towards improved health. Offering a dedicated space to work out, both in terms of the weightlifting and functional training capability of the gym, but also the headspace of a ‘zone’ to escape to at home. With inactivity still a huge issue in modern day life, working from home has introduced another barrier to movement with little or no commute, sedentary days on Zoom and a lack of motivation to train.
For discerning home style and interior devotees, PIVOT enables an efficient and elegant use of space – effortlessly hiding all the multi-use gym elements out of sight under a minimalist bed frame. Adding interest and value to any home, the gift of strength and fitness might be priceless, however the economics behind a costly monthly gym subscription combined with the outlay for a double bed for your guest-room actually stack up to a prudent financial investment.

All of the wisdom gleaned from a half-century career in business shared through inspirational quotes – one for every day of the year.
A OnePoll study released in early 2022 revealed some sobering statistics about the UK workforce. Namely, the average British worker spends one fifth of the year feeling unhappy at work. In the United States, 16 per cent of the employed population said they felt dissatisfied with their work.
If you find yourself in this position – or if you’re ready to take your career to the next level – then Dr James Espey OBE is ready to be your mentor. In his second book, 365 Quotes to Accelerate Your Career and Find Balance in Your Life, he shares the wisdom he has gleaned from a more-than-50-year career in business and marketing. The book’s themes include changing jobs, leadership, entrepreneurship, resilience, respect, building your personal brand and the business world post-COVID-19. It’s all presented in short, easy-to-digest quotes from James, as well as from other figures who have inspired him along the way.
James says, “I believe that in the modern world, people are looking for short, pertinent, succinct bits of advice. That is why I decided to write this book: to give you guidance and to encourage you to make the right decisions on your journey through life.”
Proceeds will raise vital funds for Shawmind, a Newark-based mental health charity of which James serves as president.

The Seven Destinies of Love – Claudia De Llano (January 2023)

Genres: Psychology, Spirituality, Self-Help
Publisher: Cherish Editions
Publication date: January 26th 2023
Online: https://www.literallypr.com/public_relations/file/Claudia-de-Llano.php

The Seven Destinies of Love takes a psycho-spiritual look at the developmental stages of learning to love from the womb to the tomb. Each love destiny is a poetic journey of healing and learning to love ourselves, our humanity, our connection to the earth, our inextricability from life, our inclination toward spiritual awakening and our transcendence to death.
Many psychological models help us understand child, human, behavioral, personal and relational development, but few teach us about the stages of love from birth to death.
Gently guiding us through each destiny, this book teaches about the layers of love within us that need to be revealed and cultivated in order to improve our relationship to self, others and the universe in every stage and dimension of our lives. By honoring our ancestral inheritance to the legacy we leave behind, we discover how to love with purpose and awareness. Such awareness provides a context for connecting to our personal meaning and experience on earth. Love is the teacher, the lesson and the culmination of a destiny fulfilled.
Our love destinies are not always linear. We shift in and out of them, sometimes bypass and sometimes only work through parts of them. This book aims to return us to the path of the heart so that we may actualize our destinies from the highest place within us. This is a spiritual journey, fluidly moving through each stage that helps to return us to our innate state of being what we already are – LOVE.

Genres: Psychology, Spirituality, Self-Help
Publisher: Independently Published
Publication date: November 2017
Online: https://www.literallypr.com/public_relations/file/Dr-Tony-Ortega.php

Dr Tony Ortega’s debut book, #IsHeHereYet: Being the Person You Want to Be With is an extremely raw (and funny) look at the perceived epidemic of being single in our quest for love. It dismantles the notion that there is something that we need to do in order to bring in “The One.” Instead, it challenges you to be “The One” and see what shows up then. Regardless of the outcome, the end result will be the best version of you possible.
This book is geared toward single and partnered people alike. Through personal and professional accounts of real life situations, as well as thought-expanding exercises and meditation tools, the reader will leave with a greater understanding and concept of themselves. They will be able to “date themselves” and create the space to naturally attract loving and authentic relationships.

How Did Life End Up With Us – Sean O’Connor (March 2023)

Genres: Popular Science, Evolutionary Theory, Anthropology, Game Theory, Social Science
Series: The Secrets of Life: From Big Bang to Trump
Publisher: Otium Press
Publication date: March 2023

The Secrets of Life series is written for everyone who, frankly, needs a spot of cheering up, and will provide conversation starters for years after reading! O’Connor’s easy-going, conversational style brings an outsider’s questioning eye to the great forces behind life.

The first book in the four-part series contends that if we set received wisdom to one side and really dig into the facts, there are actually very few ‘secrets’ in life. Instead, suggesting it’s possible to see that from the split second of Big Bang, right up to our present attempts to make the world a better place, everything that’s alive has been trying to find strategies to survive the iron Laws of Thermodynamics, to work together to make more from less, and to overcome the constant threat of destructive, entropic forces.

How Did Life End Up With Us? delves into explanations as to the reasons behind why cooperation is the strongest force in life, and why altruism is the proof for the ‘gene-based theory of evolution’.
O’Connor reveals that from the point that life first sparked off some 3.8 billion years ago, every living thing has descended from the original cell by taking blind mutational and genetic ‘decisions.’
Through The Secrets of Life series, aimed at general readers like himself, O’Connor recognises that life may appear as an endless and violent conflict, yet under the obvious requirement to take one another’s energy, there’s always been a deeper current that’s driving living things to higher and higher levels of cooperation. In other words, the future isn’t quite as bleak as you may believe!

HOME ALONE IS OFFICIALLY THE UK’S FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE OF ALL TIME
• RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH NAMED THE NUMBER ONE ON-SCREEN SANTA
• OVER 1 IN 5 BELIEVE DIE HARD IS NOT A CHRISTMAS FILM
• BUDDY THE ELF IS THE UK’S FAVOURITE CHARACTER FROM A CHRISTMAS MOVIE

Home Alone is the UK’s favourite Christmas movie of all time, according to new national research revealed today1.

The movie, originally released in December 1990, took 19% of the vote, beating out tough competition from Will Ferrell classic Elf (14%) and the festive favourite Love Actually (13%), according to the nationwide study carried out by Showcase Cinemas ahead of the Christmas period.

Elsewhere, in a closely fought race to be named the UK’s favourite film character from a Christmas movie, Will Ferrell’s performance as Buddy saw him land top spot, with 1 in 5 choosing the eccentric elf as their number one. Macauley Culkin’s breakout performance as Kevin McCallister (17%) in Home Alone landed in second place, while action hero John McClane (15%) from Die Hard rounded off the top three.

Not only was Buddy named the favourite character from a Christmas film, he was also named the number one character participants would like to spend Christmas Day with, taking 16% of the vote.

However, in the most controversial reveal from the survey, over 1 in 5 of participants claimed Die Hard is not a Christmas film.

And what is a Christmas flick without Santa Claus? With a whole host of actors taking to the big screen to portray St. Nick, it was Richard Attenborough’s performance in the 1994 remake of Miracle on 34th Street that the UK named its favourite, taking over a quarter of the vote (26%).

Here’s a gift guide to gear up the most adventurous outdoor enthusiasts
South Africa, 09 December 2022: ‘Tis the season to be adventurous! That means everyone will be in high spirits, from the little ones searching for fun things to do in the summer sun to families going camping and the unmistakable smell of braai meat permeating the neighbourhood air.
However, with all the festivities and different summertime activities, finding the ideal gift to suit everyone and the adventures they’ll be getting up to this season can take time and effort. So, we’ve put together this gift guide guaranteed to get anyone geared up for fun in the sun this festive season.
“South Africa is such a stunningly beautiful country this time of year. It offers countless outdoor activities for the entire family, from spending time at our fantastic beaches and scaling challenging hiking trails to holiday visits to national parks that create endless opportunities to connect with nature,” says Martine Vogelman, Strategic Brands Director for Cape Union Mart.”That’s why we’re simplifying the gift-buying process for outdoorsy loved ones who might be tricky to shop for.”
So, to ensure you have no excuse to wait until the last minute to do your festive season shopping this year, here are some gift ideas for that outdoorsy loved one:
● For the little outdoor adventurer
Little adventurers love exploring. So, to help ensure that the festive season is filled with wonder and excitement every day, protect them from the summer sun on their next adventure with a K-Way Talus Kids Floppy.
Made from quick-dry and moisture-wicking nylon, it features a wide brim that includes a toweling sweatband and an adjustable chin strap. These additions provide enough shade to protect kids from the sun on their little outdoor missions.
● For the little wanderer
We all know how little ones love to explore the world around them! So why not let your little ones run free with the K-Way Kids Venture Sandals? They feature a durable synthetic upper for wear resistance with a stretch-fit neoprene lining that keeps kiddies’ feet comfy all day.
A compression-molded EVA phylon midsole adds arch support and long-lasting comfort, while the durably TPR outsole provides skid-proof properties for even the most active little wanderer.
● For the fearless outdoors female
Fearless outdoors women deserve only the best festive season gift that combines outdoor and safari functionality with a feminine look to protect them against the elements. The K-Way Zambezi Waist Bag does just that.
It offers stylish on-the-go convenience by featuring one main entry pocket, an adjustable strap for a customized fit, metal hardware and a rubber-banded badge for that finishing touch.
● For the all-terrain hiker
Any seasoned female hiker will tell you that no terrain is the same – that’s why the KEEN Women’s NXIS EVO Waterproof Hiking Boots are the ideal all-terrain festive season gift.
The KEEN.DRY waterproof breathable membrane allows water out, but not in, while a PFC-free durable water-repellent coating will keep the wearer cool and dry as they seek those summits. Best of all, they feature ECO Anti-Odour that provides natural odor control.
● For the urban adventurer
Adventures aren’t limited to the wild outdoors. So consider getting that urban adventurer a city backpack like the Deuter UP Stockholm, which takes care of them and the environment with its resource-saving production.
The UP Stockholm is manufactured from recycled materials and uses less water and crude oil in the manufacturing process. It also offers enough space for everything the urban adventurer will need for a day at the office, university or while out with friends.
“The festive season is about encouraging everyone, young and old, to find their inner adventurer, and the ideal outdoor gift can help them do that! As a trusted, one-stop destination for outdoor enthusiasts, travelers, and explorers, Cape Union Mart’s mission is to ensure that families and friends have the right gear to get the most out of their adventure, whatever it may be,” concludes Vogelman.

RUGBY PLAYERS STAR IN UK’S BiGGEST ADVENT CALENDAR AND LAUNCH MATCHING CHRISTMAS CARDS TO FUNDRAISE FOR ED SLATER AFTER MND DIAGNOSIS

• 23 players from both Gloucester Rugby and Gloucester Hartpury feature in the UK’s BiGGEST advent calendar
• Ed Slater also appears as Father Christmas in the advent calendar which appears on the side of a huge office building in Gloucester
• The images have been printed onto Christmas cards which will go on sale December 1st to raise funds for Ed and his family

THURSDAY 1st DECEMBER: GLOUCESTER, UK: 23 rugby players from Gloucester Rugby and Gloucester Hartpury have joined Ed Slater to star in the UK’s BiGGEST advent calendar, displayed afront a huge office building on a main road in the city. The calendar, which is in its fourth year, has previously been adorned with various Christmas animations as each day throughout December a new door is opened – making it a huge hit with local residents, with hundreds of social posts each festive season championing its appearance.

This year the BiGDUG office advent calendar showcases a very special array of pictures, by promoting the images of the rugby players, some of whom play internationally for England, Wales and Scotland. All of the players can be seen enjoying different festive activities such as decorating a Christmas tree, playing snowball fights, tinsel tug-of-war and much more – with Ed Slater himself appearing as Father Christmas.

Not only that, but all 24 images have been turned into Christmas cards too, raising money for the 4ED campaign. The cards, which are sold in packs of 48, contain two cards of each image from the likes of Jonny May, Louis Rees-Zammit, Chris Harris, Mo Hunt, Adam Hastings, Lewis Ludlow and many more – all with the player’s autograph inside.

Ed Slater joined Gloucester Rugby from Leicester Tigers in 2017 before being forced to retire, following his diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) earlier this year. Ed and his family have received an outpouring of love and support since his diagnosis including this most recent fundraiser from main partners BiGDUG.

The whole £7 charge for the cards plus the entire delivery cost will be donated back to the fundraiser by BiGDUG, so purchasers can feel confident every penny they give will go straight to support the Slater family. FOUR WAYS TO TRANSFORM A GENERIC SPARE ROOM
NEVILLE JOHNSON REVEALS HOW TO CONVERT A STANDARD SPARE ROOM INTO A PERSONAL HAVEN

When it comes to redecorating the home, it may be difficult to find inspiration. This can be especially daunting when it comes to the spare room. Perhaps you have just moved in and need to fill an empty space, or your children have left home? Perhaps you’ve found that there’s that one room that seems to collect a multitude of items and could do with a rejuvenation, or a helping hand to achieve its full potential?

Premium fitted furniture brand, Neville Johnson, has shared its inspiration for spare room makeover renovations. From bespoke walk-in wardrobes to tranquil, luxury vinyl rooms, there are many innovative options to transform a once drab space into one that gives envious wow-factor.

BESPOKE WALK-IN WARDROBE

A bespoke walk-in wardrobe is any fashion lover’s idea of heaven. For those who have a large amount of clothing and accessories, a walk-in storage solution is the most practical option. Fitted furniture will transform an empty room into a luxurious personal dressing space that perfectly displays your most treasured pieces. Floor-to-ceiling shelving maximises the height of the room and provides optimal storage for folded items, bags, and shoes. Hanging rails ensure longer clothing such as jackets and dresses will not become creased, and concealed draw storage allows space for neatly organised accessories and smaller pieces.

Bespoke Walk-in Wardrobe

BEDROOM UPGRADE

For those who enjoy accommodating overnight guests but struggle with the knowledge that the spare room could be maximised further, fitted furniture allows you to create a modern room that ensures the most comfortable stay for guests. Neville Johnson’s Contemporary Willow Bedroom, for example, can be tailored to all shapes and sizes of room. The over bed built-in storage completely maximises space for both guests and your own belongings. An integrated vanity unit makes the perfect area to enjoy getting ready in the morning, with the fitted wardrobe nearby for optimised storage.

Contemporary Willow Bedroom

MODERN LOFT HOME OFFICE

Fitted furniture can be configured to the most awkward of spare spaces, even within the loft. This may be difficult to visualise when there are awkward corners and sloping ceilings however, the task ca be simple. The furniture is designed to fit the exact measurements of the room, making it completely bespoke. A modern Loft Home Office is ideal if you work from home and need a personal and organised space. The wall-to-wall storage instalment creates a mass amount of space. Doored cabinets tuck away electrical and larger items, while open shelving allows for decorative items. The free-standing workspace completes the room, providing a productive work environment.

VINYL ROOM

Nothing says luxury like a tranquil bespoke vinyl record room, perfect for music enthusiasts who need extra space for their collection. Closed cabinets conceal technology, meaning the space can remain clutter free.

Neville Johnson has a vast range of colours and finishes to tailor the design to your own taste. The calming Grey-Blue shade embodies the tranquil atmosphere that a vinyl room forms, paired with an Oxford Oak finish that completes the element of luxury.

5 HOUSEHOLD HACKS THAT COULD SAVE YOU UP TO £1,000 A YEAR
TV STAR AND HOUSEHOLD HACK EXPERT ANTHEA TURNER GIVES HER TOP 5 TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR WHITE GOODS (AND SAVING BIG MONEY)

OVER half of Brits are now looking for ways to repair and maintain household items instead of replacing them, according to new data released today1.

As Brits review their spending due to the cost-of-living crisis, a new study by cleaning and laundry expert, Dr. Beckmann, reveals that 53% of the nation are looking for affordable solutions to maintain their homes, with one in 10 claiming that the cost of replacing large household items is something they are worried about, as prices rise across the country.

The research also reveals that the average UK consumer spends up to £1,000 a year on the replacement of household appliances and furniture, with the vacuum cleaner identified as the most replaced product (32%), followed by the kettle (30%) and microwave (27%).

Over time, the replacement of general household appliances can accumulate to a significant outgoing throughout the year – a cost which could be avoided just by regularly servicing our machines to ensure they remain reliable and efficient.

Dr. Beckmann has partnered with renowned television presenter and household hack enthusiast, Anthea Turner, to produce top FIVE tips to help Brits protect and prolong the lifespan of their appliances and furniture, to avoid having to splash the cash in getting them replaced.

TV presenter, Anthea Turner, said: “I am delighted to be working with Dr. Beckmann on showcasing some of my most useful household hacks. Now more than ever, it’s incredibly important for families to ensure they are taking the relevant steps to keep outgoings as low as possible.

“Looking after existing appliances may seem like an obvious step to take when thinking about how we can minimize additional costs, but it’s a tactic that is often overlooked. It can be all too easy to simply dispose of an old washing machine or dishwasher, and upgrade to a newer model, however products such as Dr. Beckmann’s range of Service-it Washing Machine and Dishwasher Cleaners are designed to not only keep your appliances fresh and hygienically clean, but also help to maintain the working parts so they run more efficiently and last longer – just like your car! ”

ANTHEA TURNER’S TOP 5 HOUSEHOLD HACKS:
1. Banish stubborn stains
“Accidental spills and stains in the home are inevitable, but they can leave behind a horrifying sight. Whether that’s on your clothes, upholstery furnishings or your carpet, stubborn stains can be eradicated, if they’re treated quickly!

“Old school remedies such as baking soda and white vinegar work great on stains, simply mix with water and blot the blemish with a damp cloth. Make sure to act quickly, as if treated correctly, your household item will be looking as good as new again. I’d always have a dedicated stain remover in the cupboard too, just in case.”

2. Clean out the hoover
“The hoover is one of the most used appliances in the home. It’s important to look after your hoover, as repairs and replacements can be costly. Cleaning out the hoover every few weeks is a good way to avoid any unwanted breakages, especially if you use your device as frequently as I do.”

3. Deep clean your appliances
“Remember that as well as cleaning kitchen surfaces, the fridge and freezer need a thorough deep clean, along with the washing machine, dishwasher and oven, to ensure they stay in great condition. Using a dedicated appliance cleaner, will ensure the items stay well maintained and protected from limescale and bacteria build up.”

4. Lighten the laundry load
“Reduce the never-ending spin of the washing machine, by combining your darks and lights into one, single wash. Don’t worry about the dreaded colour run, as Dr. Beckmann’s Re-usable Colour Collector Cloth collects the dirt and dye that come out of your clothes to ensure your colours are kept brighter for longer – it can also be used as a microfiber cloth once it’s finished, so it has a dual usage!”

5. Battle limescale
“Descale your kettle ready for those winter warming hot drinks. Fill your pot with a mixture of half water and half vinegar and leave to soak overnight. Rinse thoroughly in the morning to remove any lingering odours (or tastes!), then boil up some fresh water. I’d recommend doing this once a month to ensure the scale doesn’t build up, as this makes it extra difficult to remove.”

On maintaining household appliances to keep costs low, Dr. Beckmann spokesperson, Susan Fermor said: “The cost-of-living increase is understandably an incredibly daunting prospect for many households across the UK. Unfortunately, it’s not going away anytime soon, so we wanted to highlight the importance of ‘servicing’ your appliances to help prolong their lifespan.

“Our study has previously shown that many Brits don’t necessarily think about deep cleaning their appliances, with 20% of householders admitting to never cleaning their washing machine. We’d recommend doing this once every 2 months or every 30 washes, just to ensure bacteria and limescale doesn’t build up affecting its efficiency and performance.

“We’ve partnered up with Anthea to help provide Brits with some quick-thinking top tips, as it can be difficult to know where to start when trying to minimize household outgoings. The changes made don’t necessarily have to be huge, every small change contributes to a helpful saving.”

And that’s not all…as the cleaning and laundry brand have launched its very own ASMR cleaning product playlist, so instead of splurging out on the cost of household appliances running during bedtime to enable sleep, simply tune into Dr. Beckmann’s dedicated white noise playlist via Spotify here: spotify.com

THE COUNTDOWN TO CLEAN-MAS HAS BEGUN

GET YOUR HOME READY FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH THE ULTIMATE 12 DAY CLEANING COUNTDOWN

‘Tis the season to be jolly – but with Christmas just around the corner, many families across the country are feeling the stress of the festivities, as they begin to get their homes ready for the holidays.

Whether you’re readying your house for the arrival of the family, or you’re tackling that tedious mulled wine stain on your carpet, cleaning and laundry expert, Dr. Beckmann has given the gift of cleaning this Christmas, with a festive 12-day Countdown to Christmas top tips, to ensure your humble abode is merry and bright this festive season.

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS CLEANING

DAY ONE: Dreaming of a GloWHITE Christmas
First things first… it’s time to rescue your Christmas decorations from the attic and give them a well-needed dust. To brighten up your snowmen, angels or snowflake soft toys place them in the wash alongside Dr. Beckmann’s Glowhite ULTRA to bring the faded colour back to life.

DAY TWO: A truly clean Christmas
Christmas is almost upon us, so it’s time for a clear-out. Pop your favourite Christmas classics on and go through your house top to bottom and get rid of anything you don’t need – ready for the new year! Don’t forget to clean those usually forgotten items such as handles, doorframes, and make sure to scrub at those skirting boards with a damp cloth after tackling them with a vacuum and duster to pick up any excess dirt.

DAY THREE: Winter windows
Windows are often forgotten about in the lead up to the festivities, but as your Christmas lights light up your homes, any sign of dirt is impossible to avoid. Give your windows a spruce with a glass cleaner, ensuring those mucky fingerprints are eradicated before the celebrations begin. If you don’t have any in the cupboard, simply mix white vinegar, distilled water and a drop of essential oil, then shake. Spray the solution lightly over the affected area and wipe to rid your windows of any unsightly marks.

DAY FOUR: Cleaning down the chimney
One of the cosiest parts of the Christmas is gathering round the fireplace, but charcoal often has a nasty habit of getting everywhere! You can eradicate these grinch-worthy stains by blotting the blemish with cool water mixed with normal washing up liquid. Finish by dabbing the area until the liquid is absorbed.

DAY FIVE: Merry mulled wine
Alcohol stains can be a nightmare before Christmas to get out of your carpets and furniture, especially mulled wine. If you have an unfortunate spillage, make sure you blot the alcohol with a cloth until the liquid is absorbed, then sponge with cold water. Dr. Beckmann’s Upholstery Stain Remover is great to have in the cupboard, ready and waiting for those stubborn upholstery stains!

DAY SIX: Tackle the teapot
Descale your kettle ready for the winter warming hot drinks. Fill your pot with a mixture of half water and half vinegar, leave to soak overnight. Rinse thoroughly in the morning to remove any lingering odours, then boil up some fresh water

DAY SEVEN: Give your appliances a 5-star service
Tackle the dishwasher and washing machine with Dr. Beckmann’s Service-it Deep Clean range. Pour the powder directly into the drum or bottom of your appliance, then select a standard cleaning programme and run the cycle. Home appliances are on a never-ending cycle during the holiday season, so using a specialised cleaner to banish the bacteria will ensure your clothes and dishes are left fresh and clean.

DAY EIGHT: The Molar Express
Everyone loves a chocolate Advent Calendar in the run-up to Christmas, but with kids around there is bound to be chocolate trodden into the carpet or spilt onto the sofa. Be sure to scrape any excess chocolate off the stain, then blot the mark with a damp cloth. Finally apply a stain remover or detergent to the stain and scrub!

DAY NINE: Tinsel toilet treatment
Spritz your toilet using Dr. Beckmann’s famous Power-Foaming Toilet Cleaner. Watch as the foam fizzes up leaving an ultra-fresh fragrance – so clean you could eat your Christmas dinner off it!

DAY TEN: Paw-fectly clean-up after your pets
Spruce up your pet’s bed ready for the Christmas fun, pop it in the washing machine for a deep cleanse, then give those stubborn marks a scrub with Dr. Beckmann’s Pet Stain & Odour Remover.

DAY ELEVEN: Overwork that oven
Deep clean your oven ready for Christmas dinner. Squirt oven cleaner all over the exterior and interior of the oven. Leave overnight, then use a cloth to scrub the spillages away. Your oven will be shining clean and fresh in no time!

DAY TWELVE: Christmas Magic
Pop all of the family’s Christmas jumpers in the wash ready for the big day! Work some Christmas magic with Dr. Beckmann’s Magic Leaves Laundry Detergent Sheets to keep your festive jumpers merry and bright through to 2023!

And finally…RELAX! Put your comfy slippers on, the festivities have begun – Merry Clean-mas!

On getting your home Christmas ready, Dr. Beckmann spokesperson, Susan Fermor said: “Getting your home ready for the festivities can seem like a big task and there always seems to be a to-do list longer than Santa’s naughty and nice list. Follow our 12-day Countdown to Christmas cleaning tips daily to ensure your home is holiday ready without it seeming like such a mammoth task, allowing you to see the new year in with a fresh, clean start!”

England rugby union Head Coach, Eddie Jones, opens up to Men’s Health UK on pushing criticism to one side, plans to leave his job after the World Cup, how he sees England’s chances in France next Autumn, and how he maintains his mental health…- As part of Men’s Health’s ‘Talking Heads’ interview series hosted by mental health campaigner and strategist Alastair Campbell, Jones speaks candidly to the UK’s best-selling men’s magazine in feature available to read online now –

On how he handles his job when he gets a lot of flak:

“I push it to one side. You have to be in the game to understand this because coaching changes so much…I was with a cricket coach yesterday. He won the IPL. But then he started coaching in The Hundred and didn’t win a game. So he’s thinking, ‘Am I the best or the worst?’ There are extremes, and you have to keep a moderated view. Life is a continuum with best to worst at the extremes, and you’ve just got to keep bubbling on.”

On his performance and legacy:

“I’m 62 now and I think in pure coaching terms I am coaching better than I ever have. Results aren’t always perfect, but I’m happy with how I have been coaching. After this, I want to do something really meaningful. I’ve enjoyed England a lot, it was a bit of a rescue job at the start, now rebuilding, and I am confident I will leave things in good shape.”

On how he feels if Clive Woodward criticises him:

“I feel sad for him. If that is the best thing he has to do in his life, then he hasn’t a lot to do.”

On whether he’d criticise one of his predecessors:

“No, I’m going to make sure that I don’t. There’s another way. You don’t need to do it. Rod Macqueen, Steve Hansen, great coaches. They just get on with the rest of their lives. When you’ve had your turn, you give it to someone else.”

On the sense that media coverage doesn’t get to him:

“That’s right, mate.”

On whether he plans to leave his job as Head Coach of England after the World Cup next year:

“Yes. I only came for four years. Then we lost the World Cup final in 2019 – I felt I could still contribute, so did the RFU, so we agreed another four years. I knew it would be difficult because we would have to change the team. I’ve enjoyed it, it’s a great position, but eight years with the same country, that’s enough.”

On how he sees England’s prospects ahead of the World Cup:

“If this was the Cheltenham Gold Cup, there’s a pack of four out front – France, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand – and we are fifth, right behind them, right on the rails. A good position, provided we keep improving. Australia are there or thereabouts with us. It’s going to be the closest World Cup ever. France and Ireland are the in-form teams right now, but things will change.”

On the challenges unique to the England job compared to others in his career:

“Probably the hardest thing here is that we get so little time with the players. The players are owned by the clubs, and there’s this complex relationship between the clubs and the RFU, with the players somewhere in between. Trying to understand those relationships is difficult.”
On how he sees the balance between his physical and mental health:
“I have never separated the two. I grew up in Australia, healthy lifestyle, always exercising, and I have kept that going. There is a reasonable pressure in this job, so I take breaks at the end of tournaments to recover, which always involves hard physical training. Before Covid, my wife and I would go to this CrossFit camp in Okinawa, a beautiful tropical island, train twice a day, relax, have a nice time, come back stronger.”

Eddie Jones was speaking to Men’s Health UK ‘Talking Heads’ columnist, Alastair Campbell, available to read on the Men’s Health UK website now.

DISABLED WORKERS FORCED TO PAY MORE AND GET LESS IN PENSION CHANGE
Government body cuts pension support – in absence of functioning executive
Pension support for public sector workers will be slashed, in changes announced today [Friday 9 December].
Ulster Supported Employment Limited (USEL) mainly employs disabled and vulnerable adults.
GMB Union has been seeking meetings with the Minister for Communities, Deirdre Hargey – but in the absence of a functioning executive speaking directly has been difficult.
The Department of Communities’ key strategic priorities include tackling disadvantage and promote equality of opportunity by reducing poverty, promote and protect the interests of children, older people, people with disabilities and other excluded groups by addressing inequality and disadvantage.
GMB argues that this decision directly contradicts the Department’s stated aims.
Peter Macklin, GMB Regional Organiser, said:
“This is a disgraceful decision imposed on Ulster Supported Employment Limited (USEL).
“Many of the workers affected are those already marginalised – through disability and other vulnerabilities.
“For a non-elected government body to decide to reduce support for these workers is yet further evidence why the people of Northern Ireland deserve a properly functioning executive.”

Difficulties in discharging patients driving long waits in Emergency Departments
Responding to the latest Emergency Department performance figures published by NHS England for November 2022, Dr Adrian Boyle, President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, said:
“The Emergency Care crisis remains incredibly challenging. As we head into winter, we know things will get worse before they get better, but making things better requires the political will to drive change and improvement. Patients continue to face dangerously long waits which are harmful to them and are distressing for staff doing their best in difficult conditions.
“It is vital that politicians, policymakers and the public understand that this is absolutely not driven by any increase in people who should not be in Emergency Departments. Demand remains at a steady level – despite a recent surge in childhood presentations – and in fact attendances decreased from October to November. These waits are almost entirely driven by poor flow through our hospitals; significant shortages of staff and beds mean we have dangerously high bed occupancy levels in hospitals, and this is made worse by our inability to discharge patients due to shortages of social care staff. These have all made providing adequate care effectively and efficiently almost impossible.
“We know that patients are concerned, while Emergency Departments are under immense pressure, they remain open to anyone seeking emergency care, and people should not hesitate to go to Emergency Departments if they need it. However, if your condition is not severe, we ask the public to use appropriate channels for their care needs, either calling NHS 111, their GP or local pharmacist. It is also vital that the public, and particularly the elderly and vulnerable, protect themselves this winter by getting a flu jab and a Covid-19 booster vaccination.
“We also know there will be some concern about the nurses and ambulance services industrial action, but the public should be reassured that patient safety is the NHS’s priority and measures will be put in place to ensure their short-term safety.
“However, there is a serious recruitment and retention crisis across the NHS, which if left unaddressed, risks a longer-term decline in patient safety. The College is not a union and cannot comment on terms and conditions of staff, but industrial action is, in part, a consequence of many staff feeling burned out, exhausted and overwhelmed. In any profession overworked staff who do not feel valued will leave, and healthcare is no different. We support the individual right of all NHS staff should they feel it necessary to take industrial action.
“We hope that there is a quick resolution before any industrial action takes place. Our nurses and ambulance services staff are skilled, competent professionals who provide a vital service. It is right that they should feel valued and supported. We want to keep our staff in the NHS, and while we wait for the workforce projections that the Chancellor pledged to deliver and the workforce plan from NHS England, we urge the government to take measures to ensure we retain all our NHS staff who provide excellent care for our patients, for the sake of our patients.”

10 Multi-Platform Games that you need to play… all under £15

• Gamers are looking for ways to make their hobby more affordable

The worsening cost-of-living crisis is affecting consumers’ hobbies and past-times, such as gaming, with many having to alter or stop what they do because it can be too expensive to maintain.

The gaming industry has come a long way with advances in technology and being able to create an immersive experience for consumers, however, this comes with a price.

Video game prices have skyrocketed, and the gaming industry could be impacted due to the prices of games and consoles.

Gaming experts at Solitaired.com analysed data from digital distribution stores (Nintendo eShop/PlayStation Store/Microsoft Store) and Ahrefs to determine 10 budget-friendly video games that consumers can purchase on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox One without having to break the bank.

2. 2. Rocket League – Psyonix, Free

Rocket League is a hybrid soccer-racing game that is available on the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. Despite the game being released in 2015, it is the most popular on this list with a global search volume of over 1 million. In addition, the game is free to play on all platforms.

3. 3. Among Us – InnerSloth LLC, from £3.89

When it comes to popularity, Among Us takes the number one spot with over 6.3M global searches, however when it comes to the price, Among Us takes the third spot overall. The game starts from £3.89 on the Nintendo Switch and goes up to £4.19 on the Microsoft Store.

The game now has cross-platform ability, allowing users to play together no matter the console they have.

4. 4. Quiplash – Jackbox Games, from £7.99

Quiplash is a standalone game from the Jackbox Party franchise, it is the perfect party game and allows up to eight players and supports up to 10,000 active participants. Players need to answer witty questions and have other players pick their answers to score points. The game starts at £7.99 on the Microsoft Store but is also included in several Jackbox ‘Party Pack’s’ which start at £17.99.

5. 5. Screencheat: Unplugged – Unity, from £10.79

Screencheat was released back in 2014 and deserves a place on this list due to its fresh take on first-person shooter games. The game is a split-screen shooter where players are all invisible. Players will have to ‘screencheat’ to find their opponents and shoot them. The game is available for £10.79 on the Nintendo eShop and goes up to £11.99 on both PlayStation and Microsoft stores.

6. 6. Death Squared – SMG Studio, from £11.49

Death Squared was initially released in 2017 and became a hit amongst gamers eventually having ports released to iOS and Android devices. It is a puzzle video game that focuses heavily on cooperation and communication skills. The game starts at £11.49 on the PlayStation Store and goes up to £11.99 on both Nintendo eShop and Microsoft Store.

7. 7. The Last Campfire – Hello Games, from £11.99

The Last Campfire is a puzzle game released back in 2020 and received a 10/10 rating on Steam. The game focuses on loneliness and community. Players are required to solve environmental puzzles that help unlock new areas of the game and help characters. The game is currently available for £11.99 on both PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store.

8. 8. Boomerang Fu – Cranky Watermelon, from £11.99

Boomerang Fu is a fighting party game that allows for up to six players at once, compared to other party games allowing up to four players. It has received a 10/10 rating on Steam and has additional gaming packs available to download. The game starts at £11.99 on PlayStation Store

9. 9. Overcooked – Team17, from £12.79

Overcooked is a cooking simulation party game that has a large fanbase and is available on numerous platforms. Due to its popularity, it is often sold alongside its sequel for a reduced bundle price. The game starts at £12.79 on the Microsoft Store and goes up to £14.99 on
the Nintendo eShop.

10. 10. Trivial Pursuit Live! – Ubisoft, from £11.99

Trivial Pursuit Live! is a digital version of thf the well-known trivia game. It allows users to play remotely or online and follows the scenario of a game
show. It is currently available for £11.99 on both PlayStation and Microsoft Stores.

The worsening cost-of-living crisis will mean that frequent gamers will need to change their behaviour when it comes to making their favourite hobby more affordable.

Despite this, when it comes to cutting costs on video games, there has been no differentiation in cost regarding physical and digital copies. For example, the most recent game from the Pokémon series starts at £49.99 for a physical copy, and the same for a digital download code, on the Nintendo Online Store and Nintendo eShop. This could potentially explain the games’ drop in sales, despite only being released two weeks ago. Consumers would expect a difference in pricing for digital and physical copies, due to fewer materials and shipping required.

However, digital distribution stores do offer discounts and have frequent sales on their stores and gamers should take full advantage of this.

Gamers should also look at smaller indie games, especially as they can be cheaper. Solitaired.com commented on this data saying, “Indie game publishers can create just us fun games compared to bigger publishers such as Nintendo, Konami or Sony. The only difference is that the majority of the time indie franchises are much cheaper and more affordable in today’s climate, and it is important to put a spotlight on them”.

Christmas Shopping: Know your rights
With most of us cutting back on spending it’s more important than ever to know our consumer rights and ensure that we are not fobbed off, especially at Christmas. Helen Dewdney, The Complaining Cow consumer champion it’s on hand with this advice to ensure that we don’t get caught out.
10 Top Tips for smart Christmas shopping
Purchasing

1) The gift I bought is faulty – what can I do?
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (CRA) you are entitled to goods that are free from defects, of satisfactory quality, match the description and last a reasonable length of time.
If the item is in breach of the Act you are entitled to a full refund up to 30 days from purchase and after this time you may be offered a repair or replacement.

You do not pay return postage if you bought online.

2) I changed my mind on a gift I bought – what are my rights?
If you bought the item online you have a 14 day cooling-off period from the day after you received the goods when you buy via mail order or Internet. And a further 14 days to send it back.
Whether you pay return postage depends on the retailer’s terms and conditions – unless it is in breach of the CRA, in which case you do not pay the return postage.
However, if you bought the item in store then it will depend on their policy. Unless the item is in breach of the Consumer rights Act 2015 it does not have to refund your money.

3) I paid for a named or next date delivery and it came late – what are my rights?
If you paid extra for delivery on a certain date, including next day delivery, you are entitled to the refund of that charge if the item did not arrive at the agreed date and time.
Be aware though that with the Royal Mail strikes there may be delays which are out of the retailer’s control. Check despatching and allow the extra time. You are still entitled to the refund of the extra you paid though.

4) My delivery was damaged – what are my rights?
Your contract is always with the retailer. Therefore, complain to the retailer, not the courier. Some stores will try and fob you off – don’t let them!
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 your contract is always with the company to whom you paid your money.

5) How do I ensure I get my money back?
• Quote the law, it shows you mean business. You don’t need to know all the details, just where to look for them and how to quote, such as with the CRA above.
• Be polite, objective and succinct. Outline the issues and what you want as a solution. Is it a refund? Or is it an apology, for example?
• Write, don’t phone. This gives you evidence if you need to take the matter further. If you do have to phone, follow up with an email outlining what was agreed during the call.
• Give them a deadline for when you expect a satisfactory response and what you will do if you don’t get one, such as sharing your experience on relevant review sites and forums, going to the relevant ombudsman or Small Claims Court.
• If you don’t get satisfaction from Customer Services, go to the top and write to the CEO. You can find the email address for the CEO at ceoemail.com

Receiving

6) What should I do if I’ve received a gift card?
Get it spent! Buy something for someone else, or sell the gift card, perhaps? Many have a limited time period on them. So, get it gone. This is particularly important with so many retailers going into liquidation. If a retailer does, it is very unlikely you will be able to use your gift card. The administrators will decide.

But you are better off just getting it spent.

7) What do I do if a gift is faulty?
If you have the proof of purchase and the item was bought within the previous 30 days, you can take it back for a full refund. The CRA applies but if you don’t have the proof of purchase the store may take back an item but will give you the current price which will be lower if in the sale.

8) Can I return a gift if I don’t like it?
If the gifter has enclosed a gift receipt, you can take it back and get a refund or a replacement or a voucher. This will be up to the retailer to choose which options are available.
If there is no gift receipt it will depend on the retailer’s own policies.

Meals out

9) My Xmas party meal booking was not honoured – what are my rights?
Speak to the manager and try to come to some agreement, perhaps a free drink while you wait for the table. If this cannot be done, then ensure you inform the manager that you will be taking the matter further to claim compensation. If the booking was for a special occasion then this could be reflected in any compensation claim. Make sure that the establishment knows that the booking is for a special occasion and what that is when you book. You can claim for loss of enjoyment and disappointment. And you can also claim for out-of-pocket expenses, such as travel.
Try to find an alternative place to eat. When you complain, show the evidence of you attempting to find an alternative restaurant.

A note though – please, honour your booking! Especially in these difficult times for the industry, your “no show” could contribute to lost revenue and eventual closure.

10) The food was poor at my Christmas meal – what are my rights?
You should complain at the time to be taken seriously, and to be able to follow up. Quote the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which entitles you to food and service that reflects the establishment. So, compare with a similar place serving comparable food. You do have the choice of refusing a replacement course and deducting the price of the unsatisfactory item from your bill.

If you are made to pay under protest complain in writing later and if possible write “Paid under protest” on the bill and take a photo of it. If you refuse to pay for anything and the establishment does not agree with you or wants to take the matter further, you must leave contact details, otherwise it could be considered theft!

Do not eat the food that you are complaining about!

Take a photo for following up the complaint to show the quality problem and then complain in writing.

Make sure you don’t get fobbed off this Christmas!
