A ver poor Derry YM side were no match for Rainey II at Drumahoe, where the visitors ran in eleven tries in a very one-sided affair. Centre R.Devlin kicked ten conversions.

Derry looked good in the opening minutes, but once the Rainey forwards warmed to the task, they had no answer. The winners’ backs moved it well throughout and their offloading game produced results. Centre M.McClelland and full-back P.Cassidy claimed hat-tricks, while wing P.Dillon, flanker C.McIvor, second-row T.O’Hagan and hooker C.Heaney got one each. Out-half K.Irvine also picked up one, as well as making Heaney’s try with a delightful crossfield kick. Outstanding in the pack were McIvor, Hutchinson and O’Hagan, whose ball carrying and strong runs put their colleagues on the front foot.

BHSFP II 15 – 84 RAINEY III
Magners Junior League 10th December 2011
Scorers: Moran(1*Pen), 8*Con, 4*Try), McNamee(3*Try), Kidd(2*Try)C Patterson(1*Try), I Patterson(1*Try), Niblock(1*Try), Andrews(1*Try)

Rainey Third’s last game before the Christmas break proved to be an absolute cracker at the War Memorial Ground in Greenisland. Turning up with only 14 players, including debutant C.Scullion, the players knew they would have to all pull together for a much needed win. I.Patterson stepped up to the mark and filled the gap at hooker.

BHSFP took the lead with an early penalty. After that it was all one way traffic with the outstanding C.Moran scoring the first of his four tries underneath the posts. Soon after, classy J.Niblock took an offload from C.Patterson, to further increase the lead. An avalanche of scores now followed, with P.Kidd scoring one in each half and the underrated I.Patterson forcing his way over after D.McCann made some hard yards. A.Davis and A.Sterling also deserve special mention for putting in their usual amount of big hits and scrooge-like defending.

The second half saw the bulldozing C.McNamee claiming a hat-trick, captain C.Patterson cantering over from a scrum 5 metres out and the wily D.Andrews finishing off the best try of the day after some excellent offloading from J.P.Clayton, K.McCann and C.Magee.

The win now puts the Thirds back in contention for the League title with several of the top team’s dropping points over the weekend. The next game is away to rivals City of Derry on 7th January.

Team: K.McCann, I.Patterson, D.McCann, A.Sterling, J.P.Clayton, C.McNamee, A.Davis, C.Patterson (c), C.Magee, J.Niblock, P.Kidd, D.Andrews, C.Scullion, C.Moran.
