North Down Allianz for Womens Rugby

Three of the Rugby Clubs in North Down have pooled resources to enter a team into the Ulster Women’s Development League. Bangor, Ards and Donagnadee have each had Women training over the last few years, but have not been able to sustain sufficient numbers to field regular teams.
Towards the end of last season, the teams came together to play in a few friendly matches against Queens, and realized the potential for an amalgamated team. Over the off-season, the girls have put in a huge amount of effort to get the players from each of the clubs together, and have now formed a North Down Women’s Rugby team. Although each player will remain a member of their respective clubs, they will come together for joint training sessions and for match days.

The official launch of the team and the new kit will take place within the next few weeks. In the interim however the players and clubs would like to give a huge welcome to Allianz insurance who have come on board as the main sponsor for the team for the incoming season.

The squad will be managed and coached by long-standing club members; Davy Coey, Ozzy Gordon, John Carlisle and Gary Presho who have commented on the great support received from the Ulster Branch, Allianz Insurance and of course, the three clubs involved in the venture.
The team comprises players of all abilities; therefore, anyone who would like to give it a go would be encouraged to come along to training sessions at Ards, Bangor or the Dee.

This venture will help to raise the profile of Women’s Rugby within the North Down area, and with a large number of under girls already getting involved at youth level, both within the clubs and at some of the local schools, this should provide an opportunity for them to progress into the adult game.

Joint pre-season training sessions will be rotated around the three clubs on Sunday afternoons starting 2:00pm on Sunday August 5th at Bangor RFC. For further details, please visit any of the club websites or facebook pages.
