RFL aims for ‘state of the art leadership’ with new management course

The Rugby Football League (RFL) director of projects and people Jon Dutton and finance director Tony Sutton have kicked off the organisation’s bespoke leadership development programme at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School.

Running for ten months, during which time ten delegates from the RFL leadership group will attend six half-day sessions at the university, interspersed with workplace projects, the course has been two years in the planning. Teamwork, coaching and mentoring, change management and leadership all feature on the RFL’s tailored syllabus.

The course is based on the university’s acclaimed Masters of Sport Directorship (MSD), which qualifies its students for the role of sporting director and has attracted a host of high profile professional sports people including St Helens RFC CEO Mike Rush and Mark Bitcon, director of performance at Wigan Warriors.

Stephanie Sturges, programme leader at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, said: “The RFL has made an innovative move to improve its sustainability and leadership structures and we got off to a great start with our inaugural session in January: the feedback from the delegates has been fantastic.

“Forward thinking sporting organisations are now acknowledging that they need to professionalise and actively support progression if they are to lead the way in promoting a successful organisation that leads by example across the whole sport.”

RFL finance director Tony Sutton said: “As Rugby League’s national governing body we want to invest in our people so that we have continued excellent leadership that will future proof us as an organisation and enable the RFL – and all levels of the sport – to operate as effectively as possible.

“This programme is an important step for us. We approached Manchester Metropolitan because they have proved with their superb MSD course and the high calibre of students it attracts that they are the leaders in this field, which merges the best in corporate governance with state of the art leadership in sporting organisations.”

The RFL employs 150 people between its Leeds-based headquarters and its Salford and London offices. The organisation manages the England Rugby League team, the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, Betfred Super League, the Betfred Championship and League 1, and also supports and administers the grassroots game.

Most rail passengers unhappy with their journey
Transport Focus announced today that their latest National Rail Passenger Survey showed that only a third were happy with their last journey.

Anthony Smith, chief executive of Transport Focus, said:

“For passengers, it’s all about performance – these value for money scores reflect patchy reliability. In London and the South East, Southern, Thameslink and Southeastern passengers have felt performance pick up. However, South Western Railway, TransPennine Express and Arriva Trains Wales passengers, among others, have been buffeted by poorer performance.

The survey, which included more than 27,000 passengers, showed that satisfaction has dropped to 75% overall and to 64% for South Western Railway. These results contrast starkly with Thameslink, where satisfaction is up 13%, one assumes due to the increase in investment by the company.

“Train companies and Network Rail need to keep to their basic promises and deliver a relentless focus on day-to-day performance and better information during disruption”, said Anthony Smith, chief executive of Transport Focus.

Penny Thompson, blogger at Pennyssavings.com uses Thameslink and agrees. “Despite really mucking it up when things go wrong, the new 12-car Thameslink trains really have been an improvement. Yes, services are still busy, but those extra carriages have made a difference, as have the in-train information systems which show you live data on the passenger loading across the carriages.”

Helen Dewdney, The Complaining Cow – consumer blogger and author of How to Complain: The Essential Consumer Guide to Getting Refunds, Redress and Results! – is not surprised by the results. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that investment in the railways will improve the service! Although many people moan about rail services, they don’t complain to the companies and get the redress to which they are entitled. If more people did this then at least they would get some recompense and send a strong message out to these companies.”

Network Rail compensates train operators for delays due to track problems which is their fault. But the companies do not hand over this compensation to the customers who were inconvenienced. So, what do we need to make sure we get redress in the easiest way possible?

Dewdney shares some of your rights and tips:

1. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers rail travel, so you can complain about more than just delays! If that journey was provided with poor service and therefore without “reasonable skill and care”, according to the law, write and complain!

2. Passengers are entitled to have their compensation paid within 14 days, issued by the same method the passenger used to pay for the ticket.

3. Keep your tickets as evidence and take a copy if you have to post them.

4. Make a note of your journey: Date, time, where travelling from/to and how long you’ve been delayed at the time, before you forget!

5. Make a note of the reason given by the train company for the delay.

6. Check how long you have to claim, it is usually up to 28 days.

7. Passengers can claim for any length of delay. If you suffer repeated delays of less than half an hour or overcrowding due to an unexpected lack of carriages, you might get money back if you take your case to court. Currently, no compensation is offered for delays less than 30 minutes.

8. Where a service has not been provided with “reasonable skill and care”, passengers will now have a right to a refund of up to the full ticket price.

9. Put your complaint (unless web based delay/cancellation refund) in writing so that you have a record.

10. You don’t need a third party company to claim for you, just like claiming for delayed airline flights. Instead, do it yourself and get 100% of the refund.

11. If the issue was within the company’s control, be objective, succinct and clear in outlining the issue that occurred.

12. Make it clear what you want to happen as an outcome and what you will do if you are not satisfied with the response (e.g. take it further through Transport Focus or if inside London, London Travel Watch or the Small Claims Court.

13. If you are still not satisfied with the response, write to the CEO of the train operator using contact details from the CEOemail.com website. The matter will then be escalated and taken seriously.

14. It may also be possible to claim from your credit card company under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act for non-delivery of services.

NFL STAR BACKS 2018 IT’S A PENALTY CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD

· Recent news stories highlight the need to recognise and educate on the link between child sexual exploitation and sport

· It’s a Penalty exists to protect children from abuse and exploitation globally through work on the ground and advocacy for global enactment and implementation of Extraterritorial legislation against child sexual exploitation

· 2018 sees the largest campaign to date and this week focus moves to Sunday’s Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis

· Previous campaigns have helped facilitate the protection of over 16,300 victims and have impacted over 519 million people worldwide

Former NFL star running back Rashad Jennings has voiced his support for the 2018 charity campaign It’s a Penalty, ahead of this Sunday’s Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Harnessing the power of sport and its ability to unite and to break cultural barriers, It’s a Penalty positions major sporting events as platforms for positive change across all societies by educating, equipping and encouraging the general public to #knowthesigns of child abuse and exploitation, to know about the penalties for offenders and to take action – ‘If you see something, say something’.

The 2018 campaign is the largest to date with the Super Bowl LII the first of four major sporting events targeted. Collaborating with the Super Bowl anti-trafficking sub-committee and partnering with the Carlson Rezidor Hotel group and 14 of their hotels in Minnesota, the campaign targets sports fans who have travelled to the event, athletes and locals through a variety of tactics including a short film featuring Rashad Jennings – which is being shown in three of Carlson Rezidor’s major hotels in the city – the Radisson Blu Downtown, the Radisson Blu American Mall and the Radisson Red during the event.

Of his involvement, Jennings said “I am proudly taking part in the It’s a Penalty campaign, because I believe every child should be defended against sex trafficking.”

The need for the campaign has never been stronger, with recent stories in the media highlighting the very real examples of child exploitation that happen throughout sport. It is also an issue particularly relevant in Minnesota, where in 2015 there were 943 minor female victims of sex trafficking and 36 minor male victims, although it should be noted that this figure did drop in 2016 when 27 boys and 371 girls were victims of sex trafficking[1].

Furthermore, according to a report from the Minnesota Department of Human Services last year, state officials say nearly 40,000 children were suspected of being abused or neglected in Minnesota last year, a 25 percent increase from 2015 (https://www.twincities.com/2017/04/13/reports-of-child-abuse-spike-dramatically-in-minnesota/).

Alongside the specific Super Bowl activities, the global campaign highlights a new first-of-its-kind safeguarding map (see: www.itsapenalty.org/makeareport) which explains how to report such crimes against children worldwide, in addition to a new global safeguarding It’s a Penalty app enabling the general public to interact, share and learn about ways to protect children.

Working with its partners – including Comic Relief, A21, The McCain Institute, World Vision, Sysdoc and the Carlson Rezidor hotels – and backed by sporting legends including Gary Lineker, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Liam Malone, Francois Pienaar, Maro Itoje, David Luiz, Usain Bolt, Denise Lewis OBE, Cathy Freeman and Rashad Jennings, four major global sporting events are being targeted in 2018 including Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis (USA) on 4 February, the Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea from 9-25 February, the XXI edition of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia (4-15 April) and the Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Rugby Sevens (6-8 April).

An international initiative, It’s a Penalty works with the governing bodies of sport and organisers of the sporting events, hotel partners, international airlines, NGOs, NGBs and other stakeholders within global sport to not only highlight the global problems of child abuse and exploitation but also the specific dangers of vulnerable children being groomed and exploited during global sports events[2].

It does this by:

· Educating sporting fans, tourists, local residents and the general public about the issue, and about the penalties for offenders, as well as to #knowthesigns of child abuse and exploitation in order to report it

· Encouraging people ‘If you see something, say something’

· Equipping the general public with global mechanisms to report what they have seen through a local telephone or text number

The campaign was originally conceived by Sarah de Carvalho MBE and UK charity Happy Child International to protect children and eradicate child exploitation in the run-up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and, subsequently, the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics. Central to the campaign was the education of sports fans, tourists, athletes and local residents on the risk of inadvertently having paid-for sex with children aged 17 or under, believing them to be older.

By working in conjunction with NGOs around the world, British authorities and the Metropolitan Police, It’s a Penalty, together with their partners, helped facilitate the protection of over 16,300 victims of child exploitation during the 2014 football World Cup and the 2016 Olympics & Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. The It’s a Penalty campaign has now reached and impacted 519 million people worldwide.

The long-term objective of It’s a Penalty is to achieve systemic change in order to protect children on a global scale. To achieve this goal, they are advocating for the global enactment and implementation of Extraterritorial legislation against child exploitation, which will allow countries to prosecute their citizens for the abuse of children abroad.

Sarah de Carvalho says: “There is no doubt that prevention is infinitely preferable to cure when it comes to child abuse. We know how crucial it is to educate, equip and encourage the public to stop more children becoming victims of sexual violence and are pleased to be working with our partners, the NFL and the Carlson Rezidor hotel group to educate, equip and encourage around this spectacular global sporting event.”

She continues: “With over 2 million children exploited into the global sex trade every year[3], it’s never been more important for sports fans to work together as a team to protect vulnerable children and we hope our new initiatives will inspire much-needed change.”

Equifax reveals that 9% of those in a relationship have hidden credit card debts from their partner

London, February 2018 – Whilst romance will be on the cards this Valentine’s Day, consumer credit expert, Equifax, is warning about financial connections that might carry on long after a relationship has ended.

Recent YouGov research commissioned by Equifax[1] reveals that 9% of UK adults who are married or living in a civil partnership said they hide credit card debts from their partner. Unfortunately, when a relationship ends, this hidden debt could have a long-term impact on the other person in the relationship, especially if the couple had taken out joint financial agreements during their time together.

According to the Office of National Statistics[2], the average marriage lasts 12 years, and men aged 45 to 49 and women in their thirties (ages 30 to 39) are the most likely age groups to divorce. And, the longer the relationship, the more likely there will be joint property and assets to divide when a couple parts. Crucially, any joint financial agreements need to be dealt with too, ensuring they don’t have a negative impact on future finances for either party.

The Equifax commissioned research of people who are married or in a civil partnership shows that 15% have missed a repayment on either a credit card or short-term loan that they hold either solely or on a joint account. In addition, 48% of married respondents who hold a joint or solo credit card can’t afford to pay the full balance due each month.

If a couple has applied to take out a joint financial agreement, their credit information will be linked on each other’s credit files. Once a couple split a lender may look at both individuals’ credit history for future applications, even if they are no longer a couple and the account has been settled and closed.

“Whilst romance is definitely in the air, it’s important to be aware of the long-term impact of joint finances, should the relationship not last, explains Lisa Hardstaff, consumer credit information expert at Equifax. “Our research shows that some couples hide missed payments and credit card debts from each other. But once a relationship is over, this could come back to haunt them with the bad credit behaviour of an ex affecting future credit applications.

Anyone facing a relationship break-up should make sure all accounts are settled and closed down. In addition, they should place a ‘notice of disassociation’ on their credit report. This prevents lenders from viewing an ex’s credit file when they apply for credit, which could impact the application.

“Whilst this isn’t the most sentimental message for Valentine’s Day, people should take care of their financial relationships, as well as their romantic relationships. It pays to take practical steps at the end of a romance to ensure there are no nasty surprises when making new credit applications after the relationship is over.”

Former Commonwealth Games record hurdler Turner and high jumper Bernard, who are now personal trainers, will be assisting competitors compete at shot put ,high jump and the 100 metre dash.

The event, is being organised by a new on demand personal training App Vyta and more than £3,000 of prizes are available to win on the day.

The sports day is raising money for the Felix Project to help feed hungry children and is free to enter.

Launch of Monthly Music Nights

K West in Shepherds Bush, a Bushstock Festival venue, will launch ‘K West Live’ monthly music nights in its Studio Bar, kicking off on Thursday 15 March 2018.

Synopsis
The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

Joining Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse, Mud), Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Bates Motel), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One – A Star Wars Story, Bloodline) and T.J. WRL WELCOMES RLIF OBSERVER STATUS

World Rugby League (WRL), a breakaway governing body representing a growing number of developing RL nations, has welcomed the news that the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) has been granted observer status with GAISF (Global Association of International Sports Federations), previously known as SportAccord.

The WRL was set up in 2017 to tackle the growing issue of developing nations failing to gain accreditation with their relevant national sport bodies affecting the credibility and integrity of Rugby League within developing nations.

WRL represents a number of nations’ ‘rebel’ Rugby League associations, including Italy, Greece and Pakistan, whose affiliation to their national sports body has been arranged or is pending.

Former England RL international Ikram Butt, one of the founders of WRL, commented: “We are pleased to see GAISF give RLIF observer status as it suggests that international Rugby League is learning the lessons of past mistakes when it comes to expanding the geographical reach of the sport.

“The RLIF has, on a number of occasions, established a ‘token’ presence in developing Rugby League nations, without going through the proper channels in order to gain official accreditation.

“The WRL was set up to highlight those nations where Rugby League has a foothold but no real integrity in terms of recognition. We have already established strong links with GAISF and it’s good to see the RLIF now following suit.

“The question is whether they will learn from their past failings and be sensitive to the individual sporting cultures of developing nations,” added Ikram.

Pierluigi Gentile, Secretary General the WRL, commented: “After meeting with GAISF last June we already knew that the RLIF was going to gain observer status. This is a positive step for Rugby League as GAISF is an organization with credibility and integrity.

“During that meeting we were informed of the criteria for full accreditation to the GAISF which involves having 40 member nations, each with official recognition from their own government or Olympic body. It’s also a requirement that there is only one global governing body for Rugby League.

“We hope that GAISF, who already have our documentation and evidence about the legitimacy of our organization, will apply due diligence when it comes to dealing with both ourselves and the RLIF,” added Pierluigi.
