T-shirts, hoodies and scarves are carefully embellished with traditional hand embroidery, edgy design and powerful words to support, inspire and uplift women in their journey through life.

I am originally from Italy. I am a passionate traveller and a dreamer, advocate for feminism, an artist, specialising in hand-embroidery. I am the host of the video show and podcast ‘Empowering Voices’. I have lived and worked across the globe from Italy to Mexico, Portugal to Greece and London and my inspiration comes from my experiences around the world and by the people I have met and their stories.

Established in 2018, Mara Girone Simple Sophistication is an “adventure of empowering hand-embroidery” – a collection of bespoke and ready to wear scarves, hoodies and t-shirts embellished with hand-embroidery and motivational words, designed to empower women and help them to face the world with strength, confidence and authenticity.

I strongly believe in the power of words beyond their value as a group of letters and sounds. Words have intention, intensity and cultural significance. These values can give us power when we carry them on our clothes as a reminder of our worthiness, strength and energy.
The unique, wearable art includes inspirational messages such as “Mindset Matters”, “Resilience” and “Unapologetically Me”.

The combination of hand embroidery and powerful and motivational words is unique to me. There are cases where the hand embroidery has been used in a similar way but the cost becomes very high, while for me it is important to offer luxury at an affordable price.
There is also a big difference with machine embroidery as the result is stiffer than with hand embroidery, it is quicker, that is true, but there are stitches that cannot be repeated by a machine.
The uniqueness of the final result makes a statement for itself.
There has been a resurgence in the popularity of hand-embroidery, which is great to see, however it is still commonly used for floral or graphic designs on hoopes, rather than the inspirational words I use.
The nature of hand-embroidery alone means that it is a more sustainable item, as wearers recognise that they are more precious because of the time and care that has gone into each garment. Add to that the fact that the raw materials are ethically sourced and where possible are recycled and 100% natural (the t-shirts are recycled fabric, the hoodies are organic cotton, and the scarves are 100% silk from my home country of Italy), and these products have very strong eco-friendly credentials. They are not disposable fashion, and so buyers are more likely to buy one of these pieces which will last years, rather than a 3-4 machine made pieces that will not last a season.
In fact, still today you can admire beautiful hand embroidery many centuries old in museums as it is a very durable and resistant form of art.
Finally, my items are designed to create inspiration for the wearer. We know the impact that words can have, both good and bad. We build words into our daily mindset routine – we say affirmations, gratitudes, and set intentions. By wearing one of these garments with messages such as ‘Be Brave. Be Kind. Be You.’; ‘Unapologetically Me’; or ‘Successfully Thriving’, the wearer is able to not only remind themselves of these inspirational words, but anyone who sees them.
I see enormous potential growth. So many consumers are waking up to the importance of slow fashion as we begin to fight this climate crisis, and recognising that clothes are a really visual, easy way to contribute positively. The more the consumers are looking for recycled fabrics, or clothing created using renewable energy, or items with low fashion miles, then the more businesses like mine will grow.

From a Mara Girone Simple Sophistication point of view, there is lots of evolution coming. We are looking at expanding over the borders of UK and Europe to explore further destinations; there is a collaboration coming that I am very excited about as it will create ties with my home town of Napoli, and my podcast ‘Empowering Voices’ is going through a restructure so that it can be an even more supportive tool for women.

3 Winter recipes From An All Year favourite… Pamigiano Reggiano… the one and only… parmigianoreggiano.com

Parmigiano Reggiano Pull-Apart Garland

This gorgeous garland makes a spectacular centrepiece for special occasions.

Preparation 30 minutes, plus time for rising and proving

Cooking 20-25 minutes

Serves 8 (2 slices each)

INGREDIENTS

500g White bread flour, plus extra for sprinkling

1 tsp. Salt

1 tbsp. Caster sugar

1 Rounded tsp. easy-blend yeast

300ml Warm water

4 tbsp. Red pesto or sun-dried tomato paste

2 tbsp. Fresh rosemary, finely chopped

150g Parmigiano Reggiano, finely grated

1 tbsp. Poppy seeds or sesame seeds

Parmigiano Reggiano shavings, rosemary sprigs

Olives, artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil, to serve

METHOD

Tip the flour into a large bowl and stir in the salt, sugar and yeast. Pour in the water and mix with your hand, then bring the dough together.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead vigorously for 10 minutes. Transfer to a large lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean cloth. Stand in a warm place and leave to rise until doubled in size – about 1 hour.

Knead the dough lightly for 1 minute, then roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle measuring approximately 50x30cm.

Spread the red pesto or sun-dried tomato paste over the dough, leaving a 2cm border along one long edge. Scatter the rosemary and Parmigiano Reggiano evenly over the surface. From the other long edge, roll the rectangle into a sausage-shape, pressing the long edge to seal it. Curl the roll around into a circle, sealing the ends together.

Lift the ring onto a large greased baking sheet, then cut 16 even slices with a sharp knife, without cutting right through, keeping the circular shape. Twist each slice so that the cut surface lies upwards. Sprinkle with poppy seeds or sesame seeds. Leave in a warm place for 30-40 minutes to rise.

6 Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 210°C/Fan 190°C/Gas Mark 7. Bake the garland for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

Scatter the garland with shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano and sprigs of rosemary and serve with olives, artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil.

Cook’s tip: To make separate buns, cut through each slice completely and arrange on lightly greased baking sheets, cut side up, leaving them to rise as before.

Minestrone with Parmigiano Reggiano

This classic minestrone is delicious – and it’s SO easy to make! It’s packed with healthy vegetables, and the Parmigiano Reggiano adds a wonderful flavour and authenticity – and some valuable protein too.

Preparation: 20 minutes

Cooking: 50 minutes

Serves 4-6

INGREDIENTS

1 tbsp. Olive oil

1 Large onion, chopped

2 Garlic cloves, crushed

2 Carrots, chopped into small pieces

3 Celery sticks, thinly sliced

1/2 Medium swede, chopped into small cubes

50g Fine green beans, trimmed and sliced

1.5 Litres vegetable stock

410g Can borlotti, cannellini or haricot beans in water, drained

400g Can chopped tomatoes

2 tbsp. Tomato puree

1 tbsp. Dried mixed Italian herbs

Chunk of rind from Parmigiano Reggiano, for added flavour

80g Small pasta shapes

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Parmigiano Reggiano, finely grated, to serve

METHOD

Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion, garlic, carrots, celery, swede and green beans. Fry gently over a medium-low heat for 5-8 minutes, stirring often.

Pour in the stock, then add the canned beans, tomatoes, tomato puree and dried herbs. Add the chunk of Parmigiano Reggiano rind – this will impart a delicious flavour to the soup. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for 30-35 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.

Add the pasta to the saucepan. Stir well, then cook for 8-10 minutes, until the pasta is tender. Season, then serve, sprinkled with lots of Parmigiano Reggiano.

Cook’s tip: Always remember to make use of the flavourful rind from your chunk of Parmigiano Reggiano – especially good in soups and risottos.

Parmigiano Reggiano Nibbles

Perfect for entertaining, these three Parmigiano Reggiano nibbles are tasty and moreish.

Parmigiano Reggiano and Thyme Shortbread

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: 12-15 minutes

Makes approximately 26

INGREDIENTS

120g Butter, at room temperature

180g Plain flour

Generous pinch of salt (sea salt flakes are good!)

90g Parmigiano Reggiano, finely grated

1 tbsp. Fresh thyme, chopped

1 Egg yolk

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180°C/Fan oven 160°C/Gas Mark 4. Line 2 baking sheets with non-stick baking parchment.

Beat the butter with a wooden spoon to soften it, then add the flour, salt, Parmigiano Reggiano, thyme and egg yolk. Work them in with a wooden spoon.

Gather the dough together and knead lightly for a few moments until smooth – though take care not to over-handle as you don’t want to warm the dough.

Roll out on a lightly floured surface to approximately 6-7mm thick and use a 5cm cutter to stamp out approximately 26 rounds. Arrange on the baking sheets, prick with a fork, and bake for 12-15 minutes until light golden brown. Cool on the trays, then transfer to an airtight tin to keep for up to 1 week.

Cook’s tip: Try using finely chopped rosemary instead of thyme.

Parmigiano Reggiano Puff Whirls

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 18-20 minutes

Makes 24

INGREDIENTS

1 x 320g Frozen puff pastry sheet, thawed

1 tbsp. Yeast extract (Marmite)

80g Parmigiano Reggiano, finely grated

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 210°C/Fan oven 190°C/Gas Mark 7. Line 2 baking sheets with non-stick baking parchment.

Unroll the puff pastry sheet and thinly spread the yeast extract over the entire surface, right up to the edges. Sprinkle the Parmigiano Reggiano on top, then roll up the sheet tightly from one long side.

Use a sharp knife to slice the roll into 24 equal pieces and lay these flat on the baking sheets. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until cooked and golden brown. Cool, then serve.

Cook’s tip: Use green or red pesto or sun-dried tomato paste instead of yeast extract.

Parmigiano Reggiano Seeded Bites

Preparation time: 15 minutes, plus chilling

Makes approximately 16

INGREDIENTS

125g Parmigiano Reggiano, finely grated

125g Low fat soft cheese

3-4 tbsp. Mixed seeds (sesame, poppy, linseed etc.) toasted

METHOD

In a mixing bowl, combine the Parmigiano Reggiano and soft cheese together, using a fork or wooden spoon. Chill for 10-15 minutes.

Form the mixture into roughly 16 small balls, then roll them in the toasted seeds. Keep covered and chilled until ready to serve.

Cook’s tip: Roll the balls in chopped herbs instead of seeds, for a change.

1 in 4 children could be in poverty by 2024/25 unless Executive acts, charities warn
• Spiralling cost of living, challenging labour market, weak social security system, and widening income gap set to drive a rise in child poverty, warn Save the Children NI and Child Poverty Action Group
• New report calls on the Executive to lift the two-child limit and introduce a £20 Child Payment to bring about a historic fall in child poverty in the next five years.
One in four children in Northern Ireland are set to be in poverty by 2024/25, according to new analysis published today (Thursday) by Save the Children Northern Ireland and Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG).

Families are facing a spiralling cost of living, a challenging labour market, a weakened social safety net, and a widening income gap, according to the new research.

Analysis in the “Brighter Futures” report shows that, while it was in place, the £20 increase to Universal Credit and Working Tax Credits prevented 11,000 children from being plunged into poverty, which contributed to a decrease in the rate of child poverty.

But with this support now cut, the charities are warning that child poverty in Northern Ireland is on course to rise to 25% over the next five years.

But the increase is not inevitable. The briefing paper calls on the Executive to:
• remove the two-child limit for Universal Credit and child tax credit;
• introduce a £20 Northern Irish Child Payment for children in families eligible for means-tested benefits.
Together, these measures would ensure that 38,000 fewer children are in poverty in 2024/25, reducing the child poverty rate to a historic low of 17%.

Peter Bryson, Head of Save the Children Northern Ireland, said:

“It’s unacceptable for any child to grow up in poverty. Preventing an increase in the child poverty rate must be the priority of every party in Northern Ireland.

“The shortfalls in our system are forcing families to make impossible choices between food and heating their homes. Even before the pandemic, we just weren’t doing enough to lift children out of poverty. And without action, the challenges that families are facing now will see more children growing up in poverty in the coming years.

“That’s just wrong. The Executive urgently needs to act if it wants to live up to its commitments in the Programme for Government to give children the best start in life.”

Alison Garnham, Chief Executive of Child Poverty Action Group, said:

“The prospect of a 25% child poverty rate in Northern Ireland is grim but our analysis shows the rise in child poverty can be stopped if we make good decisions for children now.

“The Universal Credit reforms announced in the Budget will help some low earners, but millions of struggling households will be no better off for the change. The priority must be removing the two-child limit and introducing a new child payment to support family budgets in the poorest households.

“We all want children in Northern Ireland to have a good start. That begins with ensuring every family has enough money to live on.”

CHILDREN love to mimic the lives of adults and role-play their favourite jobs from film and TV, and new research has revealed what children want to be when they grow up with the big impact this has on their playtime.
A survey of 1,000 children aged 5-7 from dolls’ pram expert Play Like Mum, has revealed how much children are influenced by their senior role models, as nearly half (43%) like to pretend to have a grown up’s job in their playtime.
Counting down the days until they reach adulthood themselves, 41% say they are excited to grow up and start a new job, with only 11% admitting to feeling worried about the prospect.
The power of the influencer is still very much alive, as becoming a YouTube star was the most popular career choice amongst 5-7 year olds – which is unsurprising given social media is so influential amongst the younger generation.
Parents will be delighted to find out their children are keen to care and look after others, as being a doctor was next to appear on the list, followed by a professional footballer – which saw 18% of boys dreaming of being the next Marcus Rashford.
More than 1 in 10 children surveyed have revealed they want to become a vet when they grow up, which was identified as the most popular job for young girls (17%), while many dream of protecting their local community from crime, as a policeman / woman completed the top five.
Research also revealed the important influence that parents and grandparents have on their children and grandkids, as 19% aspire to be like their mum and dad when they grow up, while 4% look up to their grandparents and want to take on their role.

Ground-breaking UK human trials bringing hope to paralysed

– Rugby community unites to support rollout of new therapies on anniversary of historic World Cup victory
– New spinal stimulation therapy has the potential to improve or even reveal function in damaged spinal cords
London 10/11/2021.
The lives of 60,000 people in the UK and more than 3 million worldwide who have been left paralysed by spinal cord injuries (SCI) could be about to benefit from a new treatment method which has the potential to deliver multiple health benefits.
A number of ongoing ‘neuromodulation’ pilots in the UK which employ electrical stimulation to ‘re-tune’ the spinal cord to receive signals from the brain have shown promising early results. These pilots use a spinal simulation technology which has already shown to improve movement, sensation and other critical functions in trials at home and abroad.
These neuromodulation pilots are funded by Spinal Research-the U.K.’s leading medical charity focused on the repair and restoration of the spinal cord. With fundraising severely disrupted by the pandemic, the charity is now looking to make up for lost time by raising £500,000 to build on the outcomes of these pilot projects. These funds will be used to prepare the UK for the application of this life changing technology into meaningful treatments.
Spinal Research’s Patron, former rugby international and current chairman of the British Lions Jason Leonard OBE, is now calling for a concerted fundraising drive from the rugby community to support this development and rollout.
Someone sustains a spinal cord injury every four hours in the UK. Despite recent rule changes, as a contact sport rugby still has a prevalence of such injuries. Unfortunately a high percentage of these are cervical (neck) injuries, which can lead to paralysis in all four limbs and a lifetime of complex health problems.
English rugby’s most capped player, Jason Leonard commented: “Every rugby player knows that they are putting themselves at risk of injury every time they cross that white line. As such there is always a risk of sustaining a spinal cord injury in a split second, and the consequences of paralysis are devastating for players, families and friends.”
“Spinal Research is funding ground-breaking pilot projects that have the potential to deliver meaningful treatments for those injured whilst playing rugby, as well as the wider SCI community. Sadly, like so many charities impacted financially recently, the biggest barrier to progress is funding.”
“That’s why I’m calling on the whole rugby community to come together as we celebrate the anniversary of England’s World Cup triumph in 2003. It was a pivotal occasion for rugby in the northern hemisphere-we can use that life changing moment as a launch pad to raise the funds needed to ensure these life changing treatments are brought to the clinic as quickly as possible.”
On 22nd November, Jason and Spinal Research will officially launch the Tackling Paralysis campaign – a two-year fundraising initiative for players and fans at all levels of amateur and professional rugby, running up to the 20th anniversary of England’s historic drop-goal victory over Australia.
Rugby clubs, players and supporters across the UK are urged to host a wide range of activities to raise funds for Spinal research and its trials. Fundraising ideas guidance and resources are available from the dedicated website.
Players of all abilities are especially encouraged to take part in the DropKickChallenge – sharing videos of their most eye-catching drop-goal attempts on social media alongside an optional donation, for the chance to be recognised and reshared by a professional rugby player or team.
Funds raised via Tackling Paralysis will go towards helping people like Max Levene to regain functions lost through a spinal cord injury. Aged just 17, Max was injured playing rugby at school when he was pulled down awkwardly in the last play of the game.
Max remembers “As soon as I hit the ground I knew what had happened. It was like the lights had been switched off from the chest down-no pain, just nothingness.”
“My life changed playing the game I still love- it can happen on any rugby pitch, at any age and at any level. I know the rugby community looks after their own. Tackling Paralysis is a great way for the close-knit rugby community to drive new treatments forward together.”

“Paralysis used to be known as a life sentence, but by supporting the development of new treatments, we can tackle that idea into touch for good,” commented Max.

Thanks to the efforts of its supporters, Spinal Research is currently funding a portfolio of 20 research projects, crucially eight of which are now being trialled in humans. The focus is to restore hand and arm function, improve incontinence and reduce debilitating nerve pain. Improvements in any of these areas will have a huge impact on everyday independence, spontaneity and quality-of-life for people living with paralysis.

Despite the fact that the field is chronically underfunded, scientists around the world have made remarkable progress in understanding the spinal cord and what it will take to restore it after injury.”

10 November 2021, London: On Saturday 27 November, Dungannon RFC will be joined by two British & Irish Lions legends – Dungannon RFC’s former flanker, Stephen Ferris and winger, Tyrone Howe – as well as current Irish rugby union player Gill Bourke and former England players, Mike Tindall, James Haskell and TV presenter Alex Payne, for the second leg of the Vodafone Lions Legacy Tour.

Dungannon RFC is one of four clubs – including Westbury RFC, Aberdare RFC and Bannockburn RFC – selected for the tour, an initiative dedicated to supporting grassroots rugby clubs in the UK and Ireland. Dungannon was chosen for its commitment to growth and championing women’s rugby.

Vodafone, as the lead partner for the 2021 British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa, is visiting each club to host a fun-filled day of sport, including scheduled matches, pitch-side games and entertainment. The tour aims to raise awareness of the positive impact grassroots rugby has on the local community and help raise much-needed funds for the clubs, following the many challenges faced during the pandemic.

Vodafone’s Lions Legacy programme will also provide technology solutions, including video camera equipment and MacBooks to support training and matchday analysis, as well as the creation of social media content. Dungannon RFC will also receive a new till system to help it run more efficiently and other digital learning tools to help it become more financially sustainable.

On the day itself, a selection of Dungannon RFC members will be invited to attend digital workshops led by the team behind The Good, The Bad & The Rugby podcast. This will include a session with James Haskell on social media and one on how to celebrate, market and commercialise the club’s 150 Year Anniversary (due to take place in 2023), led by businessman and sports presenter, Alex Payne.

SEA LIFE BIRMINGHAM HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF MARINE ANIMALS IN FIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE

As the world’s leaders continue to discuss ongoing actions to fight climate change at the COP26 conference, SEA LIFE Birmingham has shared vital information of the importance marine life has with regards to the future of our planet.

Specifically, the UK’s first ever sea otters, Ozzy and Ola who are true heroes in the fight against climate change. The cuddly pair made the news earlier in the year for their psychic powers of prediction at EURO 2020 and now SEA LIFE Birmingham are highlighting just how important sea otters, like Ozzy and Ola, are in helping to fight climate change!

Sea otters are a keystone species, meaning that they’re critical to the survival of the other species in the ecosystem. Known as keepers of the kelp forest sea otters feed on sea urchins, keeping the invertebrate’s population low which enables kelp forests to thrive.

Thriving kelp forests along with marine vegetation absorb an estimated 20 times more carbon dioxide per acre than forests on land, making them an extremely powerful force in mitigating the effects of climate change. Without sea otters, urchin populations would explode and subsequently, take over and eat entire kelp forests.

The biggest threats to the sea otter’s population is pollution, mainly from oil which filters into the sea which significantly impacts the fluffy creature’s ability to keep warm in the icy water. Their lack of blubber, like other marine animals, means they rely on their unique coat, if this is dirty and oil logged, they cannot stay warm resulting in a severely decreased chance of survival.

To avoid incidents like this, our continued reliance on fossil fuels needs to change in order to maintain the number of sea otters and other keystone species throughout our oceans.

SEA LIFE works tirelessly in these conservation efforts. In the case of SEA LIFE Birmingham’s Ozzy and Ola, the pair had been found injured in the wild to the extent they were unable to be returned to their natural habitat.

The duo is the perfect example of human impact on marine life, demonstrating the need to reduce CO2 emissions, increase safer fishing protocols and limit plastic pollution in our oceans.

A movie-loving 8-year-old boy from Reading has recreated his local cinema by using his favourite video game Minecraft.
Talented William Morgan, began building Showcase Cinema de Lux Reading during lockdown because he missed making regular film trips with his family. After toiling away on the complex digital build for weeks, the talented gamer has finally put the last brick in place.
Incredible images of William’s brilliant creation present Showcase Cinema de Lux Reading in all its glory, with incredible detail throughout.
The extraordinary digital build includes the full exterior of the cinema and a series of interior designs, including the concession stand and one of the 14 cinema screens at the Reading location.
William completed the build using Minecraft on his Nintendo Switch, which allows users to use blocks to build structures inside a virtual 3D world.
His unique creation caught the eye of the bosses at Showcase Cinemas, who invited William and his family to a movie of their choice as their guests, as a thank you for paying homage to Showcase Cinema de Lux Reading.
William’s father, Tim Morgan, said: “William really missed going to the cinema during lockdown, so decided to focus on the next best thing – building the cinema himself! He is absolutely over the moon that Showcase love his creation as much as we do. We had a great time visiting recently and can’t wait to be back again soon!”

Home and garden retailer wilko is launching a nationwide search for six deserving individuals to win their entire Christmas, including presents, for free, as a thank you for their hard work throughout the unsettled period of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The six winners of the business’ Bring Home Christmas competition will each receive a tailored prize package worth £3,000, complete with everything from decorations to dinnerware, pressies to pet toys, giftwrap to Christmas day goodies and all of the essentials in-between that are needed for a successful festive celebration. RUGBY FIGURES URGE FANS TO GET VACCINATED AND VENTILATE INDOOR SPACES

Rugby figures are urging people to get vaccinated and take action, including ventilating indoors spaces, to cut COVID-19 transmission in a new film which will be shown to rugby fans at one of the most anticipated games of the Autumn Nations Series today (Saturday November 13).
The Rugby Football Union and English international rugby union referee Wayne Barnes have come together to remind sport fans to get the vaccine and to let fresh air in when socialising indoors and watching the rugby games in the series throughout November.
In a film being shown to 80,000 fans at Twickenham Stadium for the men’s England v Australia game, rugby fans are seen socialising at a pub as rugby pundits give ‘real-time’ commentary on their actions, specifically those that could spread COVID-19 in an indoor environment.
Refereeing the fans, Wayne Barnes whistle stops ‘play’ as a fan is pulled up for his ‘infraction’ as he attempts to close the window in the pub and then forgets to wear a mask in his taxi as he goes home.
The film informs viewers that opening a window when socialising indoors will help reduce the chances of catching COVID-19, as well reminding them of the importance of vaccination, testing regularly using lateral flow tests, and wearing a face covering in enclosed spaces.
This follows the launch of the government campaign to ‘STOP COVID-19 HANGING AROUND’, aimed at increasing understanding on how to reduce COVID-19 levels indoors by opening a window for just 10 minutes every hour when socialising with others.
Wayne Barnes, English international rugby union referee and barrister, said:
“It’s great to have been asked to support this campaign. Covid-19 had a big impact on rugby, both at a community and elite level and I know everyone really did miss coming together to watch and play. The RFU worked hard to get rugby back up and running in England, like the other home unions have done, and we want everyone to enjoy the game again safely.

“We have all had to adapt but it’s been great to see sports fans being able to socialise and watch games across the country together. We had the first capacity crowd back at Twickenham for 609 days to see England play Tonga last weekend and are expecting the same again for England v Australia on Saturday.
“This couldn’t have been done without the collective effort of everyone remembering the COVID-19 safety measures. As people continue to come together during the Autumn Nations Series I’d remind fans are as safe as they can possibly be and follow the guidance.”

“I urge everyone who is eligible to get their booster vaccine as soon as possible to maintain the protection the vaccines give us all as we spend more time indoors with our loved ones this winter.”
The film will be released and played at the men’s England v Australia game today and the England v South Africa game on 20th November.
Whilst the life-saving vaccines remain our best defence against COVID-19 – giving us over 90% protection against hospitalisation from the virus – people can still catch COVID-19 even if they have been double vaccinated.
With one in three people with COVID-19 showing no symptoms, it is easy to pass it onto others without knowing. With fewer restrictions in place this winter, the action of letting fresh air into indoor spaces is even more important for everyone to keep COVID-19 cases down.
Vaccines give high levels of protection but immunity reduces over time, particularly for older adults and at-risk groups, so it is vital that vulnerable people come forward to get their COVID-19 booster vaccine to top-up their defences and protect themselves this winter.

The latest evidence from SAGE shows that protection against symptomatic disease falls from 65%, up to three months after the second dose, to 45% six months after the second dose for the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, and from 90% to 65% for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. Protection against hospitalisation falls from 95% to 75% for Oxford/AstraZeneca and 99% to 90% for Pfizer/BioNTech.
Although the vaccine effectiveness against severe disease remains high, a small change can generate a major shift in hospital admissions. For example, a change from 95% to 90% protection against hospitalisation would lead to doubling of admissions in those vaccinated.
The booster programme is designed to top up this waning immunity. Early results from Pfizer show that a booster following a primary schedule of the same vaccine restores protection back up to 95.6% against symptomatic infection.
The campaign comes research revealing that only around a third of people (29%) are currently ventilating their home when they have visitors over and only 3% of those surveyed continued to ventilate their homes for a period after their guests left.
As well as opening windows for a few minutes every hour to dilute virus particles, other simple actions the public can take to reduce the spread of COVID-19 include wearing a face covering over the mouth and nose in busy indoor spaces, such as public transport or shops. In addition, the government advises everyone to get their booster vaccination when eligible and continue to get tested with a rapid lateral flow device, even if they don’t feel ill, if they are planning to mix with others indoors, or visit someone vulnerable.
Testing is the quickest and easiest way to find out if someone has the virus, even if they show no symptoms.

MORE Brits than ever are taking a bath, new national research* has revealed.

Bathing has become a real event in 2021 with music, books, candles, luxury bath cremes and even our favourite snacks making an appearance, the study by indulgent bath and shower brand, fenjal, has revealed.

Experts say it is the Lockdown effect which has seen the humble bath-time enjoy a resurgence in the UK over Lockdown, after playing second-fiddle to the shower for so many years.

The research shows that 4 out of 10 Brits now take a bath regularly – up from just 20% who say they took a bath before Lockdown.

And the surge in bath-time is down to Brits seeking new ways to relax during the forced isolation of Lockdown. Some 78% of us say the main reason we now take a bath more often is to properly relax and wash away the stresses of the modern day with some precious me-time.

“We sensed there was a surge in the numbers taking baths over lockdown so we conducted research to put some real world perspective around our changing bathing habits,” said fenjal spokeswoman Jen Varley.

“Taking a bath has been the only real opportunity for many to enjoy that ‘me’ time and properly relax both during and since Lockdown.

“The research shows that there has been a clear resurgence in the numbers taking a bath since Lockdown and that habit shows no signs of receding now that Lockdown has eased.”

Fenjal is working with renowned etiquette expert William Hanson on its British bath-time study. William is widely regarded as the UK’s most trusted authority on etiquette and civility. William is also executive director of The English Manner, the UK’s most established etiquette and protocol consultancy.

William said: “There are certain things which modern etiquette dictates we should and shouldn’t do in the bathroom. Playing music, and the choice of that music, as the study reveals, leaves a lot to be desired.

“The fenjal study shows that more than half the nation (53%) plays music in the bathroom when they take a bath.

“Pop music (50%), rock music (30%) and classical (29%) are the favourite musical genres for bath lovers, according to the data. Although, I was somewhat startled to discover that a quarter of bath-times are played out to a soundtrack of hip-hop, with dance music tunes ringing out for 27% of bath lovers during their plunge. Far too vigorous and lively, by my standards.

“The bath has become a haven for many other reasons. It has become a place where people really can take advantage and enjoy some precious ‘me’ time. Six out of 10 bath-times see bath lovers take the time for a spot of reading. Thirty-one per cent read books in the bath, 18% read a Kindle or eReader surrounded by suds and a further 11% regularly read a magazine, newspaper or other publication while they’re bathing in bubbles. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with educating yourself while in the bath.”

As you’d expect in an era where the smartphone rules, those little mobiles also accompany us to the bathroom. Some 44% of Brits take their smartphone into the bath with them, with 11% insisting they never take a bath without their phone to hand.

“Brits have once again fallen in love with just how relaxing bath-time can be, Jen Varley added. “Some 49% of us have candles in the bathroom when we take a bath, according to our research.

“Also, 82% of us use bath salts, bubble bath, bath crème or bath oil in our baths because we know how much more relaxing they make our bathing.”

Some bath-time habits are more unexpected than others, however. Three out of 10 of us now eat our favourite snacks while we’re in the bath. And 14% say they always or regularly eat while in the bath.

Surprisingly, men are more likely to take a bath regularly in 2021 than women. However, according to the data, women are more likely to use bubble bath, bath crème, bath salts or bath oil than men. And most won’t be surprised to discover that men are twice as likely as women to eat in the bath.

While bath-time has traditionally been a solo pursuit, as Brits seek out those special ‘me’ time moments, there’s also been a shift in that movement. While 50% of the nation admits it would only take a bath solo, the other half of the country wants to share its bath-time suds with someone else.

In fact, if Britain had its way, the most popular celebrity to share our bath-times would be Hollywood starlet Scarlett Johansson. While Scarlett was the most voted for celebrity for Brits to share their bath-time with, others including Taylor Swift, Adele, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt all featured high in the bath-time celebrities list.

So which parts of Britain like to bath the most? London tops the list with 50% of Londoners taking a bath regularly, followed closely by those in the North-East, with 46% regularly taking a bath.

Those in East Anglia are most likely to read in the bath, with 42% taking a book, eReader or magazine into the tub with them.

People living in the West Midlands are most likely to take their smartphone into the bathroom with them – 24% admit it always accompanies their bath-time. They’re also the most likely to eat in the bath, with 23% admitting bath-time is regularly snack time too.

Those living in Yorkshire & the Humber are most likely to use bath salts, bubble bath, bath crème or bath oil in their bath, with 47% admitting it’s a must-have.

William Hanson added: “Some of the results of the fenjal study make me shudder. The bathroom, particularly at bath-time, should be a place of calm and tranquility. Luxurious bath cremes, calming music and candles are all more than permissible. But I’m not sure that the nation truly understands this – according to etiquette, hip hop music, snacking and smartphones have no place in the modern English bathroom.”
