Australia 26 South Africa 3 – Australia were too strong for South Africa in this game though may rue leaving a bonus point behind them.
The match started well for Australia when Sharni Williams crossed for Australia’s first try early in proceedings as the women in gold dominated possession and territory over South Africa. France 26 Wales 0 – France survived a wobbly start to defeat Wales with a bonus point in their opening game in front of a big home crowd.
Wing Marion Lievre had an early chance to score when she swooped on a Welsh error to race 60 metres. She was just metres from the line when Wales fullback Laurie Harries did brilliantly to race back and tackle her, helping her side win a penalty in the process. France resorted to their strong rolling mail with Gaelle Mignot leading the charge but Wales did well to defend the initial surges.
