Letterkenny 6 – 5 Virginia First XV
Virginia miss out on Ulster Semi Final by the narrowest of margins
Virginia made the long trip to letterkenny in the Gordon West Ulster Cup Quater Final . Virginia had come into this game with a series of under par results, there had been some stern words from the backroom staff and the players to a man stood up to be counted while the result didn’t go their way this could be a season defining game.
This was to be a low scoring game and indeed it was over twenty minutes old before Letterkenny got a penalty with their first trip into the Virginia end of the field. Virginia were up until this time camped inthe Leterkenny half.
Letterkenny defended for the entire first half with constant pressure from the vistors with Ben Gilmore and Sean Meehan a constant menance in both attack and defence. Virginia just could not get over the line with some very resolute defending from the homeside, indeed the Virginia management were happy at halftime even though the result was not what they hoped for. Cian Mc Enroe had missed a penalty but his acurate kicking throughout the game kept Virginia going forward. Virginia got over for a try from good work from the backline with Niall Patterson getting the score, the conversation was missed from a difficult angle. There was still no let up from the.
Virginia side who just like the first half didn’t let up in the pressure and Padraig Mc Manus was over the try line but the referee deemed there was crossing and dissallowed, shortly after that Fintain Reilly was over the line but this time the referee disallowed it saying it was held up.
In a crushing blow to Virginia Letterkenny with the only foray into the Virginia twenty two they were awarded a penalty under the post which was converted leaving the visitors losing by a point . There was only a few minutes for Virginia to get back into the game but their efforts proved futile and this is the way it stayed at the final whistle.
