Exciting new Easter Trail at Mourne Park

If you go down to Mourne Park on Saturday 1 April, you’re sure of an Easter surprise!

Bring your family along to the Woodland Trust’s new interactive Easter trail at Mourne Park, just on the outskirts of Kilkeel. The conservation charity’s self-led trails, tailored for toddlers and teens, includes how to identify and measure trees, recognise wildlife and learn about the history of Mourne Park. Little ones can play freely and safely in Mother Nature’s Playground and teens can find out more about the work that goes on behind the scenes to restore and protect precious ancient woodland. The Woodland Trust opened Mourne Park last August and since then it has welcomed over 50,000 visitors to its three new trails. Mourne Park is one of the largest areas for ancient woodland in Northern Ireland and is home to wildlife such as native red squirrel, pine marten, otter and kingfisher.

Michelle McCaughtry, Engagement Officer for the Woodland Trust said: “Mourne Park is an explorer’s dream, an exciting playground for families, and a wonderful natural setting for days out to make lasting memories. I tailored self-led trails in Mourne Park especially for Easter to give families the opportunity to see the developments in the woodland. We have plenty of parking facilities and three surfaced paths for easy access into the woodland that families can also enjoy before or after taking part in the Easter trail”.

The Woodland Trust is the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity and by running public events such as its Easter Trail, allows the conservation charity to raise vital funds which goes directly back into work in Northern Ireland.

Michelle added: “Our Easter event is perfect for everyone – it will be a wonderful day of fun and a great opportunity to get your little ones and teens away from their screens and get some good fresh air in this beautiful woodland.”
Entry fee, which is £5 per child and £2 per additional child, includes activities along the interactive trail and a chocolate treat to bring home. Book ahead to secure your place on the trail by emailing michellemccaughtry@woodlandtrust.org.uk

Enjoy Delicious Dishes with Pizza Ovens from ACR Stoves

With the British Spring and Summer seasons within touching distance, now is the perfect time for homeowners to turn their attention to getting their outside space ready for alfresco dining and entertaining.

ACR Stoves Pizza Oven – ‘The Best Bits’

Log fired, Italian design and European manufacture.

Reaches 500°C in 30 minutes.

Premium insulation to retain heat.

Chamotte oven base for the ultimate in authentic crispiness.

Steel outer body with stainless steel inner, complete with insulation, for greater heat retention.

Versatile – these pizza ovens can also be used for roasting, slow cooking and a host of additional delicious delicacies.

We chat to Vicky Naylor, General Manager at ACR Stoves, who is on hand to offer her expert advice and to answer everyone’s most common pizza oven questions.

How do I know what type of pizza oven is best for me?

Space is key when deciding what type of pizza oven to buy. Not only for using the actual appliance but also storage as you may
have to store it indoors to keep it weatherproof – so keep that in mind when making your selection. If you have a small garden,
you need to make sure you can use it safely and not have to worry about the oven causing smoking issues where you (or your
neighbours) are sitting outside. Also, think about how many people you would like to be able to cater to. If you need to
cook a lot of pizzas in succession, the larger the oven the better at turning out pizza after pizza, but make sure that the
oven is well insulated and able to keep the temperatures required to keep cooking continuously.

What are the different fuel types for pizza oven?

The fuel choices are wood, gas or pellet. Wood will always give the most authentic taste to your pizza and surprisingly few logs
are required to get the oven to temperature to commence cooking. Gas can be more convenient but then you do have a gas bottle to
have to store too. Pellet ovens need a good supply of pellet
fuel which is not as easy to source and, once opened, you need to be sure that the fuel is kept super dry and as any amount of
moisture will make the pellets swell meaning they can no longer be used.

What can you cook in a pizza oven and how?

Wood-fired pizza ovens are a must have in any outdoor kitchen. There’s nothing quite like a wood-fired pizza with a bubbly yet
crispy crust, oozing melted cheese, fresh herbs, and an array of toppings to suit every taste. Pizza ovens are not only fun and
easy to use, but they deliver a truly authentic flavour and texture that can’t be achieved in a traditional oven.

The advantages of a wood-fired pizza oven go beyond just cooking pizza. The possibilities of what to cook in your pizza oven are
endless; from side dishes such as homemade bread and vegetables, to fish and roasted meats and even desserts. You just need to
regulate the heat according to what you are cooking. For example, bread would require a medium hot oven, lasagne would
need a cooler oven otherwise it would burn, and meat and fish are often best wrapped in foil and then slow roasted on a low
heat. Roasted vegetables are great when placed on a cast iron griddle plate and placed into a medium heat oven. Pizzas on the
other hand, will need to be cooked directly onto the base of a hot oven.

Desserts are best cooked on a low heat oven, so the sugar doesn’t burn – the first time I cooked a lemon meringue pizza,
it practically incinerated the meringue, but I soon learned that if you part cook the pizza base (about 1.5 minutes) and then
bring it out, add the lemon and the meringue before returning it to the oven for about another minute, it’s far better!

Where should a grill/pizza oven be placed in a garden?

While the location of an outdoor grill or pizza oven is a homeowner’s personal choice, it is important to ensure that your
outdoor oven is no closer than 10 feet from the entrance to your home, and that there is ample ventilation for your oven to
prevent smoke inhalation for anyone nearby. It is also vital that you choose a location that is away from flammable materials
or structures such as a fence or shed.

Preparation, cooking, and dining should all happen within the same reasonable space to remain comfortable. It therefore makes
sense to place your outdoor oven close to your indoor kitchen, so utilities such as plumbing can be shared, as well as the
convenience of easy access to ingredients, crockery, and cutlery for example.

It is advisable to avoid locating your outdoor oven under structures such as a gazebo to ensure the smoke can easily
disperse. We would always recommend that you keep your oven covered when not in use to protect it from the weather.

How much does a pizza oven cost and is it worth it?

Prices can vary significantly with pizza ovens but as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. They are the perfect
social way of entertaining for friends and family. Our Bravo
oven starts at £590.00 and our Vita Pizza Oven starts at £755.00, both offering superb economical and efficient cooking!

Cooking with wood-fired ovens is faster and more flavourful and because the food cooks faster, more of the nutritional value is
left than with conventional cooking methods.

Pizza ovens offer a great way to cut energy costs, as instead of using electricity or gas, you use only wood to produce the heat
necessary to cook. They are also a great back up in the event of your indoor oven not working or in a power cut, you still have a
way to cook a hot meal.

How should you clean a pizza stone and pizza oven?

The stone bases in ACR Stoves Pizza Ovens shouldn’t need to be cleaned as they can reach temperatures of 500°C in 30 minutes.
Therefore, the heat will burn off most residues. If any stubborn substances remain, then scrape lightly using a specialised pizza
stone brush. You can also make a paste with 1 tablespoon of baking soda and water to spot-treat the area.

For the pizza oven, always wait until your outdoor pizza oven has completely cooled before you start cleaning. The outside can
be wiped over with a slightly damp cloth and then dried to prevent any rusting. The inside will need the ashes scraping out using an ash rake
and a fireplace shovel, or similar tools. Collect the ash and add to your compost bin.

How much does it cost to run a pizza oven?

I would suggest that you would need approximately 4 kiln dried logs, split into 3 pieces to both start the fire and maintain
enough heat to cook around 6 pizzas. A bag of kiln dried logs is around £11 for
8 logs, so you would need approximately half of the bag for 6 pizzas, so about £5.50, making it less than £1 per pizza.

ALMOST HALF OF CHILDREN IN BRITAIN WILL EAT A CHOCOLATE EGG FOR BREAKFAST THIS EASTER

• Over two in five kids will eat three or more chocolate eggs on Easter Sunday
• Around a third of parents say chocolate affects the quality of their kids’ sleep
• Sleep experts at Silentnight say children should stop gorging on chocolate three hours before bedtime to improve the chances of getting a good night’s sleep

Almost half (44%) of children in Britain will eat a chocolate egg for breakfast this Easter Sunday, new data published today has revealed.

The nationwide survey, from sleep brand Silentnight, found over two in five kids wake up early on the big day to start their morning with a chocolatey treat.

Over the whole weekend, a whopping 98% of kids will eat chocolate eggs, with over two in five (42%) scoffing down three or more on Easter Sunday alone.

While the much-loved holiday should be celebrated and enjoyed, parents should also be mindful of potential sleep disruption, as increased sugar intake can have an impact on shut eye.

The study, conducted by sleep experts at Silentnight, revealed that over a third (36%) of parents say chocolate affects the quality of their kids’ sleep.

Research conducted by sleep experts internationally has shown that people who have a high sugar content in their diet tend to have a shorter sleep duration and to sleep less deeply.

That is because the body produces wake-promoting hormones when digesting sugar – which disrupts sleep.
According to Silentnight’s Sleep Expert, Hannah Shore, children should stop eating chocolate around three hours before bedtime to better promote a good night’s sleep.

Hannah said: “A high sugar diet can affect sleep quality because as the body is digesting the sugar, it can prompt the body to produce extra wake-promoting hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol.

“If we eat too much sugar too close to bedtime, these hormones are produced when we are trying to sleep meaning a reduction in deep, slow wave sleep.

“However, eating small amounts of chocolate releases endorphins and serotonin, making you feel happier, so small amounts may actually be good for our mental health.

“Realistically, kids are going to be excited to see that the Easter Bunny has been, so they will eat chocolate this weekend, as they should!

“Yes, Easter may disrupt sleep for a day or two, but that’s ok. Try to get your child to stop eating chocolate around three hours before bedtime on Easter Sunday and then get back into their usual routine in the following days.”

Here are Hannah’s three top tips to help kids dodge these adverse effects on sleep while indulging this Easter:

1. Limit sugar consumption
Parents should try to ensure kids don’t eat too many chocolate eggs in one day, to limit the spike in blood sugar and wake-promoting hormones.

2. Don’t eat sugar too close to bedtime
The general rule of thumb to avoid sugar negatively affecting sleep quality is to avoid consuming it within three hours of going to bed.

3. Follow a normal bedtime routine
Sticking to your kid’s usual bedtime routine can help prepare the body for sleep and result in a deeper, better-quality sleep. A normal wind-down routine should last at least one hour.

Remember that your child may use more energy than usual over Easter due to seasonal activities such as egg hunts and seeing family and friends, so your little one might cry out for sleep earlier in the evening after crashing.

To read more about kid’s sleep, visit Silentnight’s Sleep Guide for Kids: www.silentnight.co.uk/sleep-guide-for-kids

How can we take extra care when consuming more sugar than normal?
‘The main thing to understand about the effect of sugar on the teeth is that sugar can cause tooth decay if the teeth are exposed to sugar often throughout the day. The more frequently sugar is ingested – the more chance there is of developing tooth decay. On the other hand, the longer the teeth are sugar free the more time they have to recover from the demineralisation effect caused by the sugar. If the teeth are continually bathed in sugar – they can’t remineralise. What that means for Easter is that it is ok to have sugary treat after dinner, but try avoiding eating sugary food constantly throughout the day’

Arty activities such as bonnet decorating and egg painting however remain a beloved Easter staple however, with the volume of families searching online for ‘Easter crafts’ tripling in the last five days alone. Meanwhile searches for ‘Easter gifts for adults’ have more than doubled, showing that Easter lovers of all ages want to celebrate the occasion this year.

Want an eggs-cellent Easter? Hide chocolate away from your pets, vets warn
Vets are calling on pet owners to safely secure all chocolate treats and hot cross buns well out of reach of curious animals to avoid an emergency trip to the vets over the Easter weekend.
Easter can spark a deluge of chocolate treats into UK households, leading to a spike in cases of chocolate poisoning among pets. And with traditional egg hunts further exacerbating the risks, the British Veterinary Association (BVA) has issued a warning to owners along with a handy guide to recognising the symptoms.
British Veterinary Association Senior Vice President Justine Shotton said:
“Sweet treats and egg hunts are a fun part of Easter for many families but it’s vital we all take steps to protect our pets and avoid cutting the celebrations short with an emergency trip to the vets. Chocolate eggs and bunnies, and even hot cross buns, may seem harmless but can be life-threatening for some pets, especially dogs, who can get extremely sick even from small amounts.
“As a vet, I’ve treated many cases of chocolate ingestion over the holidays. Luckily, the vast majority of pets were brought in quickly meaning we could treat them successfully. I’d urge every owner to be aware of the risks of chocolate and rasin or grape poisoning so they can act promptly should the worst happen.”
Chocolate, especially dark chocolate and cocoa powder, can be dangerous for all pets even in very small quantities. Dogs are particularly susceptible to poisoning due to a chemical called theobromine, which is found naturally in cocoa beans. Theobromine takes a long time to be broken down inside a dog’s digestive system, which means that even a tiny amount of chocolate can result in toxic levels, especially for smaller dogs and puppies.
Chocolate toxicity cases often spike over celebratory periods such as Easter and Christmas and, with many practices closed, accessing emergency care can be more difficult and will be more costly than usual for worried owners. BVA’s Voice of the Veterinary Profession surveys from 2016 to 2018 revealed that six in ten vets (60%) had treated cases of chocolate poisoning over Easter each year. Raisins and sultanas, found in hot cross buns and simnel cakes, and xylitol (found in sugar-free treats) can also be dangerous for dogs and cats if ingested.
Symptoms of chocolate poisoning usually appear within 12 hours of ingestion and can last for up to three days. Initially, pets are likely to experience excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea and restlessness. This can develop into symptoms of hyperactivity, tremors, abnormal heart rate, hyperthermia and rapid breathing. Severe cases may result in fits and heartbeat irregularities, and even coma and death. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in some dogs so your vet may recommend your pet has blood tests or is put on fluids if there is any delay in being seen.
Accessing veterinary treatment as soon as possible after eating chocolate or other toxic foods is often critical to a positive outcome. If you notice these symptoms in your dog and suspect chocolate or grape ingestion, seek veterinary advice as soon as possible. Your vet will want to know how much toxic food your pet has eaten and what type. If possible, keep any labels and wrappers and have the weight of your pet to hand. BRIAN O’DRISCOLL AND GARETH BARRY TO SPEARHEAD
EASTER CAMPS AT QUINTA DO LAGO

Youngsters can learn from their sporting heroes when Rugby Union legend Brian O’Driscoll and former England footballer Gareth Barry lead youth training camps at Quinta do Lago, in Portugal, this April.

Imparting knowledge gained across a combined 38 years in their respective sporting fields, O’Driscoll and Barry will team up with experienced coaches to deliver a week to remember at the Algarve resort.

WATCH Quinta do Lago’s Easter Camps

O’Driscoll, who captained both Ireland and the British & Irish Lions, will return to the resort for another of his popular rugby camps from April 10-14. Aimed at boys and girls aged 5-15, the camp covers every aspect of the game and includes a full personalised kit for each participant.

Meanwhile, a soccer camp in partnership with premier coaching brand Football Escapes will take place from April 3-7, led by Barry – who has made more Premier League appearances than any other player in history. Barry’s appearance will be the first of four tantalising football camps in 2023, with his former England teammates Joe Cole and Joleon Lescott set to host similar events in May and August.

Tennis sessions will run several times a week, with five different classes to cater for young players aged four and over. The resort’s in-demand Dance Camp also returns from April 3-7 and is suitable for children aged 8-12. Football, rugby, tennis and dance sessions will take place at The Campus – the resort’s state-of-the-art performance and wellness centre. The Campus is regularly used by professional athletes and includes a high-performance gym and swimming pool as well as tennis and Padel courts.

Quinta do Lago has earned a reputation as a leading figure in European golf, with a trio of stunning 18-hole courses – the North Course, South Course and Laranjal – attracting visitors from all around the world. The South Course underwent an extensive €7million renovation in 2021 and was crowned Europe’s Best Golf Course at the World Golf Awards last year as the resort celebrated its 50th anniversary.

For young golfers, a camp available from April 3-17 offers a fun way to learn the game at one of its most prestigious resorts. Kids aged between three and 13 can take to the world’s only Paul McGinley Academy for an action-packed week, with special gifts including golf gear included in the price.

Quinta do Lago’s standing as one of the world’s finest golf resorts has only grown following the refurbishment of the par-72 South Course, which has hosted the Portuguese Open on eight occasions. The Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship – known as the ‘Unofficial Major of Junior Golf’ – is a regular fixture in the resort’s calendar, with the most recent edition taking place in November 2022.

Away from the courses, Quinta do Lago’s guests can choose from 14 first-class bars and restaurants and stay in the boutique Magnolia hotel. The Algarve is a favourite with tourists for its natural beauty and ideal golfing climate, and the sweeping 2,000-acre resort has now celebrated five decades as one of the region’s most popular destinations.

Meanwhile, Quinta do Lago is also offering a 15 per cent reduction on room rates at the Magnolia Hotel for families to enjoy this Easter.

Book now for a minimum of three consecutive nights from April 1-16. With great facilities and entertainment ideas for children, The Magnolia Hotel has everything you need, including a traditional Easter Lunch, a fantastic Movie Night and creative Easter painting crafts.

Quinta do Lago

Since its inception in 1972, Quinta do Lago has been at the forefront of international golf, hosting eight Portuguese Opens as well as numerous other international tournaments. Home to three world-class golf courses, the resort also boasts a wealth of cutting-edge practice facilities.

• Quinta do Lago North Course – The North Course has been built to the highest specifications with the emphasis firmly on precision and strategy. Designed by American architect Beau Welling in close collaboration with Paul McGinley following a €9.6m investment and redevelopment in 2014. While many modern-day developments tend to focus on length, Welling and McGinley have been keen to design a golfing experience where accuracy and course management are the key factors, and a course that is playable and fun for golfers of all abilities.

• Quinta do Lago South Course – A favourite among European Tour professionals, the South Course calls for accurate drives and precise shots, but rewards players for their efforts with the stunning backdrop of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Regularly included in Golf World magazine’s ‘Top 100 Golf Courses in Europe’, the par-72 layout has received widespread praise for its strategically placed hazards and varying difficulty across the 18 holes. Having hosted the Portuguese Open on no fewer than eight occasions, the South Course is regarded as one of Portugal’s premier golfing venues and underwent a €7m upgrade in 2020 to further enhance the playing experience.

• Laranjal – Designed by Jorge Santana da Silva in the grounds of an orange grove, the par-72 course was named as Portugal’s Best Golf Course 2011 at the Portuguese Travel Awards and poses serious tests for players of all abilities. Opened in 2008, Laranjal offers a pure golfing experience right next to the Quinta do Lago estate and features fairways sown with Bermuda grass, providing a challenging playing environment in a picture-perfect setting.

• Paul McGinley Academy – Quinta do Lago is home to the only Paul McGinley Academy in the world, founded in October 2011 by Europe’s 2014 Ryder Cup captain. With a strong involvement from McGinley himself, who is a regular visitor to the resort, the academy aims to cultivate and improve golfers’ play by providing them with the tools and techniques used on the professional Tours. The academy focuses especially on younger players, working in collaboration with local schools and is the perfect way to follow in the footsteps of the pros.

• TaylorMade Performance Centre – Quinta do Lago’s TaylorMade Performance Centre is the only facility of its kind in Portugal and is located on the resort’s expansive driving range. Opened in May 2013, the centre is operated by trained TaylorMade technicians, offering golfers a custom-fitting experience testing hundreds of club and iron options, ensuring the best combination for every player’s swing. It also has a fully equipped Tour standard workshop and utilises FlightScope X2 radar technology to measure the entire flight of the ball from impact to landing whilst displaying its 3D trajectory in real time.

Set amongst 2,000 acres of the picturesque Ria Formosa Natural Park and located just 15 minutes from Faro airport, Quinta do Lago offers residents and guests an unparalleled location benefiting from a year-round temperate climate, a variety of lifestyle pursuits and a strong sense of community.
