Sevens Stars Set to Shine at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

With one day until the stars of Rugby Sevens begin their campaign for medals at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, International Rugby Board Chairman Bernard Lapasset is anticipating a spectacular event in the country that invented the game.

In the quest for the three coveted Commonwealth Games medals, 16 nations will compete over two days and four competition sessions at the city’s iconic Ibrox Stadium.

The action kicks off at 10:32 (all times BST) on Saturday with four-time champions New Zealand taking on Canada, while hosts Scotland begin their campaign against the New Zealanders later in the day at 13:56.

Pool A – NZ, Canada, Scotland, Nigeria
Pool B – South Africa, Kenya, Cook Islands, Trinidad and Tobago
Pool C – Samoa, Wales, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia
Pool D – England, Australia, Sri Lanka, Uganda


Of the 16 teams in the draw, New Zealand, Canada, Scotland, South Africa, Kenya, Samoa, Wales, England and Australia are all ever-presents on the IRB’s annual men’s World Series, underlining the quality and competitive nature of the event which has once again been reflected in the rush for Sevens tickets.

All of the other competing nations are competitive in their respective regions, and have played at various times at the highest level.

Lapasset said: “Once again the Olympic sport of Rugby Sevens is one of the hottest tickets at the Commonwealth Games, reaching out to new and existing fans with its winning blend of world class players, breath-taking matches and festival atmosphere.

“With Ibrox the stage for some of the biggest names in Rugby Sevens to showcase their talent, Glasgow 2014 has all the ingredients to write another unforgettable chapter in the Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens success story. I am sure it will be a spectacular event.”

Some tickets are still available for Saturday 26 July 10:30 and 18:00 sessions and Sunday 10:30 session. The Finals session on Sunday 27 July, from 17:15, is sold out.
