Senior business executive to spearhead expansion
Rugby League Ireland (RLI), the company responsible for the management and development of the game in Ireland, has appointed Gordon Matthews as General Manager.
Mr Matthews (51), who takes up his new position immediately, is an experienced business executive and joins RLI from a senior management role at Kerry Foods. He will be responsible for the administration and development of RLI’s existing tournaments, for expansion of the playing base in terms of clubs and player development and for the management of the Ireland rugby league squad.
Announcing the appointment Niel Wood, Director of European Development of the Rugby Football League, said, “Our sport is reaching an crucial stage in its development in the island of Ireland and we’re delighted that an executive of the calibre of Gordon Matthews has joined us. I’m sure he will play a key role in helping us realise our objectives both on and off the playing field.”
Commenting on his new position, Gordon Matthews (pictured below) said, “I’m pleased to be joining Rugby League Ireland at such an exciting stage in its development in this country. There is much to be done but there is a real opportunity for us to play in important role in the sporting life of Ireland.”
