CAVAN 1st XV 34 DONAGHADEE 2nd XV 3
The 2nd XV made the extremely long trip to County Cavan to play Cavan 1st XV who (in common with Virginia & Donegal) have made the drop to Junior Three from the Qualifying League this term on foot of last season’s Competitions Restructure initiative. This was always going to be a difficult fixture for the Dee men and so it proved but testament to the efforts of coaches John West & Paddy McGrattan and Co-Captains Stephen Cullen & Davy Kirkpatrick the side travelled with a full complement but were hampered a litany of injuries which meant they played most of the second half with only thirteen men on the field which eventually led to a slightly flattering scoreline from the home side’s point of view. At the end of the day however rugby was the winner and two teams had a competitive game of rugby and Cavan had a successful day both on and off the pitch due to the fact that Donaghadee were prepared – literally – to go the extra mile and field at this level against a club 1st XV despite the arduous journey there and back… a sterling effort by all concerned.
