Limavady kicked off 2022 on Saturday as they turned their attention to Cup rugby. Omagh 2 were the visitors to the John Hunter Memorial Grounds in the first round of this year’s Towns Cup.

The match was barely a few minutes old when Omagh struck first with a penalty. Limavady responded and with 10 minutes on the clock Michael Shiels touched down following a rolling mall. Back came Omagh again as they closed the gap to just one point following a second successful penalty. At this point however, Limavady took control of the game. Two tries followed shortly after, both very similar to the first effort as Adam Miller touched down twice following rolling malls. Limavady maintained their dominance and were rewarded as Brandon Maxwell raced in off his wing to run in under the posts. The final try came from the youngest player on the pitch, Limavady’s scrum half, Luke Gilfillan as he accepted an inside pass from his half back partner, Peter Wilson and squeezed through the gap. With Peter successful with four of these conversions the half ended with Limavady leading by 33 points to 6

Limavady continued the second half in fine form continuing to give Omagh little chance to get back into the game. Jamie Millar was next on the scoreboard as he took a low flat pass from Peter Wilson thus creating a huge gap in the visitor’s defence. The scoring was completed by Brandon Maxwell as he chased down a long clearance kick by Peter and showed good footballing skills as he dribbled in for the final touchdown.

Final Score: Limavady 45 Omagh 2s 6

Limavady are now through to the last sixteen of the Towns Cup and await patiently to see what the Draw has in store for them.

Limavady fielded three teams this week-end with the 2nds running out comprehensive victors over Rainey OB 3rds by 41 points to 19 ( try scorers Matthew King, Gareth Kee, Adam Hutton, Andrew Miller and Aaron Reilly with Matthew King also kicking four penalties and two conversions to round off a very successful day for him) . Limavady 3rds travelled to Magherafelt to take on Rainey 4ths however things were not as rosy for them as they lost by 32 points to nil.

Next week sees the return of league rugby as Limavady host Academy, with the 2nds away to Queens 3rds and the 3rds at home to Coleraine 3rds.
