Official report below ours

Another good game and thats putting it mildly. The 1st half was a tense affair – both sides very conscious of defence although Ards had all the possession in the first 20 minutes. Ards did not manage to break through for scores though and Omagh began to take them on. What ensued was all out rugby, with excellent turn overs by the Omagh pack and precision momentum from the back of scrums, they scored, and then they scored again!

Ards stedied themselves and began the come back – and they did come back, scoring a well worked try. they were all over the pitch at one point the ball ewas swung to the wing and then to the centre and then back to the wing and then across to the other wing, they were camped on the Omagh 5 metre line and wave after wave of crash ball attacks edged the Ards men closer to the line eventually going over for the try.

Omagh responed by scoreing another try with their No.8 we think almost running an entire half a pitch breaking tackles side stepping and causing that much havoc from his pace that he was able to touch down under the posts from the wing.

The Omagh supporters went bezerk.

Ards never gave up and will have learnt an immense amount from this game. they have a plate to contest in a few weeks and after last night they must surely be on the brink of coming together.

Well done to both teams.

NUTTY KRUST FLOODLIT TOURNAMENT 2011

Omagh 19 Ards 7
Omagh booked their place in the semi finals of this season’s Nutty Krust Floodlit tournament with a hard fought victory over a valiant Ards side in Wednesday’s quarter final.

The first half was a dour and uninspiring one with both sides failing to display the form that they had shown in the opening round. Both sides had one penalty opportunity but failed to take this thus leaving the half time score 0-0.

Omagh had an early opportunity to take a lead in the second half but failed with a fairly easy penalty. However this attempt represented the start of a lot of Omagh pressure. They were awarded a succession of scrums and lineouts close to the Ards line. After a number of phases their number 8, Gary Sherrard, took play close to the Ards line before off loading to prop forward, Shane Mc Laughlin who scored close to the posts. Full back Neil Mellor added the points to give Omagh a 7-0 lead.
This seemed to sting Ards into action and they responded by launching attack after attack on the Omagh line. Despite plenty of possession, however, Ards were unable to penetrate a well organised and tenacious Omagh defence. They were soon made to regret turning down an easy penalty opportunity as Omagh forced a turnover on their 10 metre line and broke down the blind side where a 3 on 1 enable centre Art Rooke to score under the posts. Mellor converted to extend Omagh’s advantage to 10-0.

Ards reacted by increasing the tempo of the game and dominating possession once again, they threw everything at the Omagh defence line. Centre Lewis Dougan, who had been Ards best player in the first round victory over Ballyclare, threatened to breach the defence but on two different occasions he was taken down just when it looked likely that he was through the gap. Ards, however, were guilty of too many unforced errors especially with their passing. Eventually they made their pressure count as centre Jordan Depledae cut through to score under the posts. He added the conversion to narrow the Omagh lead to 14-7.

However Ards failed to gather at the restart and this was to prove costly as Omagh won the resulting scrum and their number 8, and Man of the Match, Gary Sherrard picked up from the base and ran in unopposed to stretch the Omagh lead. This was to prove the last score of the match and sees Omagh through to the semi final on 19 April where they will play the winners of next Wednesday’s match between Dromore & Rainey OB.
