KEEP YOUR eye on the ball DURING RBS SIX NATIONS

London: 13 February 2015: With the RBS 6 Nations having kicked off last week and England heading to Twickenham Stadium in to take on Italy, budding young rugby players around the country will be glued to their screens.

For those sports men and women with vision correction needs, contact lenses are the only viable option; especially in a physical and accurate sport like rugby. Research has shown that contact lenses compliment sporting performance as they deliver a more complete field of vision (up to 15% better than spectacles), as well as improved peripheral awareness and depth perception[i].

For sports played outside it is important to think about the damage that could be experienced from exposure to harmful U rays. UV radiation is a preventable threat to eye health and early ocular protection is vital, as damage to the eyes from prolonged UV exposure is cumulative and long-term. UV light can damage the cornea, lens and retina of the eye and both the lens and retina have limited capability to repair UV damage. Research has indicated a link between UV exposure and cataracts, as well as other serious eye problems.[ii] In addition to excellent peripheral vision, ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses also offer UV-blocking across their entire range.

As well offering the highest UV blocking across the ACUVUE® Brand range, daily disposable lenses provide the healthiest and safest wear when taking part in sporting activity. Players often get hot and sweaty on the pitch which means there is a potential risk of lens contamination and handling problems. Daily disposables can be discarded after each session and users won’t have to worry about placing them in solution or keeping them clean after they have been worn. Those in need of vision correction should speak to their optician to help find the contact lens most suited to them.

Gavin Rebello optometrist and sport vision expert who has given advice to the likes of England Hockey star Chloe Rogers, Paralympian sprint runner, Jonnie Peacock and downhill skier, Chemmy Alcott, said: “Clear vision is an essential part of any sportsman being able to achieve his true potential and can ultimately make or break their game. As Eye Care Professionals, it is our duty to make sure any player, in any sport and at whatever level, can see to play the game they love. Even spectators can benefit from contact lenses as they are suitable for all-weather.”

Ruth Graesser, Marketing Manager for ACUVUE® said: “The promotion of healthy eyes for peak performance in sport is a priority for us and ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses can help play a role in ensuring that players’ vision on the pitch is at its peak. Vision correction should be an important consideration for everyone taking part in any sport, no matter what level they play at.”
