There is an inescapable irony in the short, but so far eventful, career of Paddy Jackson. It is straddled across two stories about selection.

The first was bad news gift-wrapped in green with a shamrock on the front, and inside was a player’s pass to the Scotland versus Ireland Six Nations game in Murrayfield in 2013.
