Doping in rugby union: I am not being naive – our sport does not have a drugs problem

Rugby union does not have a problem with drugs, certainly not at the top level of the sport.
There, I have said it and I stand by it. In Ireland, France and now in England, there has been some recent talk of it and there have been some pretty big accusations, including that of ‘institutionalised drug-taking’.
Well, I have not seen that in my time in the game since it went professional. Yes, there have been some problems with recreational drugs amongst players at the top level, notably when Matt Stevens and others at Bath were banned in 2009, but I have never seen or heard of performance-enhancing drugs being taken.
To say that it is happening and maybe even being encouraged by clubs is rumour mongering and thoroughly misguided. I really do not think that I am that naive to be missing something here. If I had ever had any inkling as a coach that it was happening I would have sorted it immediately.
