Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Round Up Saturday 27th October 2018
Due to a combination of factors, including the onset of a half term break, there were seven midweek games played in the lead up to a smaller than usual number of games played on Saturday 27th October.
At the beginning of the week Wellington College took the opportunity to go on a five day tour to Holland. The played the Bassett’s Rugby Club U18 team and recorded a morale boosting 46-5 victory on an excellent 4G pitch. Marcus Smyth scored five tries with Chris Campbell and Chris Beattie each scoring one try. Jake Hamilton added four conversions as well as a penalty.
The draw for the first Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2ndxv Cup was made on Tuesday 23rd October. The result of the draw is as follows:-

These Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2ndxv Cup 1st Round Matches are to be played ON OR BEFORE Saturday 24th November 2018
On Wednesday 24th October Ballyclare High School played Grosvenor Grammar School in a game the Ballyclare High School team won by 42-7. The Ballyclare team had built up a 32-7 lead by the interval through tries from Adam Campbell, Jack Gamble, Adam Clarke, Matthew McCullough, Matthew Spence and Ethan Crawford. Mark Jackson was successful with one conversion.
The Grosvenor Grammar School points came through a try from Josh Malcolm which was converted by Adam Moore.
Robert Reid and Matthew McCullough scored one unconverted try each in the course of the second half for the Ballyclare High School team. These points secured the 42-7 win for the Ballyclare High School team.
Campbell College, Belfast and Bangor Grammar School played out an eighty two point twelve try thriller which finished with the Campbell College team recording a hard earned 42-40 victory.
The Campbell College points came through tries from Rex Tinsley, Paddy McAlpine, Danny Williamson, Jack Megarry, Dara Gaskin and Jack Stinson. Dara was successful with two conversion kicks as well as one penalty while Jack Bonnar was successful with one conversion as well as one penalty.
The Bangor Grammar School team scored six tries through Cameron Stewart, who touched down twice, Aaron Sexton, who did likewise, Ben McCrossan and Riley Westwood. Rhys Larmour was successful with five of his conversion kicks.
Dromore High School recorded a well-deserved 37-15 victory against near neighbours, Banbridge Academy. The Dromore High School team scored tries from Xander Lowham, Cameron Owens, Tom Dolaghan, Aaron Lyttle, Ryan McDowell, Caleb Harper and Rhys Dale. Rhys was successful with one conversion kick.
The Banbridge Academy points came through an exceptional individual try from Alex Denver as well as well-worked tries from Jack Dorman and Jake Beattie.
Omagh Academy fielded a young team against Strabane Academy and won a competitive game by 29-0. Oisin McBride, Joe Duff, Craig Hussey, Niall Alexander and Adam Porter scored the tries for the Omagh Academy team to which Rory Ritchie and Jake Reid each added one conversion.
The Royal School, Dungannon team, resplendent in their newly acquired pink playing jerseys, travelled to play Friends’ School, Lisburn and returned home having recorded an impressive 29-17 victory. The RS Dungannon team had built up a 15-0 lead by the break through an unconverted try from Jonathan McCammond and two unconverted tries from Luke McMullan.
The second half saw the Friends’ School team mount something of a revival and they reduced the deficit, at one stage, to 15-12 through tries from Sam Greer and Oliver Saunders, one of which was converted by Reece Malone. Jonathan McCammond then scored his second try for the RS Dungannon team, which was converted by Luke McMullan, to increase the RS Dungannonm lead to 22-12. The Friends’ School team then scored an unconverted try through Jack Harte to leave the Lisburn team trailing by five points with just minutes remaining. Luke McMullan then sealed the 29-17 victory for the Royal School, Dungannon team with a final play try to which he added the conversion.
On Friday 26th October Campbell College hosted St Munchin’s College from Limerick in a game the Campbell College team won by 18-10. The Campbell College points came through tries from Jack Boyle, who touched down twice, one penalty kick from Dara Gaskin, one penalty kick from Jack Bonnar as well as one conversion from Dara Gaskin.
The draw for the first round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Shield took place at Ballymena Academy on Friday 26th October. The draw was conducted by the President of the Irish Rugby Football Union, Ian McIlrath. The result of the draw is as follows:-
Craigavon Senior High School v Carrickfergus Grammar School
Strabane Academy v Belfast High School
Ballyclare Secondary School v Friends’ School, Lisburn
Bangor Academy v Antrim Grammar School
These Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Shield Round 1 games are scheduled to be place on/before Saturday 1st December.
On Saturday 27th Coleraine Grammar School hosted Bangor Grammar School in a game the Coleraine team won by 23-12. The Coleraine GS team had built up an 11-7 lead by halftime with one try from Oscar Egan and two penalties from Pierce Crowe. The Bangor GS points came from an Aaron Sexton try which was converted by Rhys Larmour.
The Bangor GS team then took a 12-7 lead in the early stages of the second half when Cameron Stewart touched down for an unconverted try. Coleraine recovered from this set back and tries from Marcus Poskitt and “Man of the Match” Conor Potts, one of which was converted by Pierce Crowe, secured the 23-12 for the Coleraine Grammar School team.
Omagh Academy played Lurgan College at the Meadowbank Stadium in Magherafelt and won a very closely contested game by 13-12. The Omagh team took a 5-0 lead midway through the first half when Jamie Wood touched down for an unconverted try. The Lurgan College team responded with a try from Ryan Allen, which was converted by Harry Bird, to take a 7-5 lead thirty minutes into the game. On the stroke of halftime Omagh Academy took an 8-7 lead into the interval when Rory Ritchie converted a penalty opportunity.
Five minutes after the restart the Lurgan College team regained the lead when Luke Forsythe touched down for an unconverted try to leave the scoreboard reading Omagh Academy 8 Lurgan College 12. The score remained at this until the final minute when Jack Moore ran from deep to touch down for an unconverted try and secure the narrow 13-12 win for the Omagh Academy team.
Rainey Endowed School played Cambridge House School in a game the Rainey Endowed School team won by 53-14. The Rainey team had taken a 17-14 lead into the interval with tries from Ross Speers and Bryan Davies. Jonathan Drennan added two conversions as well as one penalty. The Cambridge House points came through two tries from Kane McIlroy with Rory McCandless adding the extras to both.
The second half saw the Rainey Endowed School team score six tries through Ross Speers, who touched down twice, Bryn Davies, Bryan Hall, Jonathan Drennan and Aidan McDonald. Jonathan Drennan added two more conversions with Ross Speers adding one.
