Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Round Up Saturday 28th December 2013
Despite the fact schools are all on their Christmas break there were a few games played over the holiday period.
Campbell College hosted Belfast Royal Academy in a game played in difficult conditions on Friday 27th December.
It proved to be an exciting game which the Campbell team won by 26-10.
The game involving Portora Royal School and Belfast High School, scheduled to have been played on Friday 27th, was cancelled due to the inclement weather conditions.
There were four games scheduled to take place on Saturday 28th December but the Omagh Academy game v Limavady Grammar School fell victim to the atrocious weather conditions in Omagh which rendered the Campsie pitches unplayable.
Royal School, Dungannon hosted Ballyclare High School in a three session controlled game in which both teams took the opportunity to play extended squads, with the RS Dungannon boys winning the run out by 21-20.
The RS Dungannon team finished the game with two tries from Matthew Montgomery and one from Stuart Moore. Jack Milligan added three conversions. The Ballyclare HS team had built up a 20-14 lead at one stage with Matthew McDowell contributing a number of points with his trusty boot.
Royal Belfast Academical Institution travelled to play Bangor Grammar School and came away with a 35-3 victory.
The Belfast Inst team had built up an 11-3 lead by the interval with a try from Rory Bell and two Frazer Wright penalties. In reply, the Bangor GS out half converted a penalty opportunity.
The second half saw the Belfast Inst dominate the game in terms of territory and possession. The team controlled and retained the ball in a clinical manner and scored four second half tries. Rory Bell completed his hat trick with two more fine tries with Ian Jones and Frazer Wright touching down for one try each. Frazer completed the scoring for his Royal Belfast Academical Institution team with two conversions.
Royal School, Armagh and Methodist College met at the College Hill venue in a game which the home team was delighted to win by 17-12.
The Methody team had built up a 7-3 lead at half time with a Rory Cairns try which was converted by Josh Bingham conversion. The RS Armagh points in the first half came from a Matthew Hooks penalty.
The home team stepped up a gear in the second half and scored tries through Mervyn Brown and Neil Lutton. Matthew Hooks was successful with both conversions. The Methodist College team felt they had scored a number of tries in the second half but only one was awarded when Saul Herdman went over for an unconverted try. This ensured it was the Royal School, Armagh team that recorded their 17-12 victory at the end of the game.
