Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup Round 2 Previews 24th January 2015.

The Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup Round 2 games are scheduled to take place on Saturday 24th January. The seven Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup Round 1 winners joined the nine Round 2 entrants for the draw which has thrown together some interesting ties.

Bangor Grammar School will host Dalriada in a tie that has caught the imagination of both schools.
The Bangor Grammar School squad, coached by Jason Morgan, Phjil Cartmill and the effervescent David Kennedy, is made up by a good mixture of both experienced and more youthful players. They have eleven players returning from their previous Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup squad with the addition of eight players who have moved up from their Medallion team. Indeed, depending on injuries, they could have eight Year 12 players in their starting line-up. Chief among these young players is Matthew Agnew who. despite the fact he is just sixteen. has already gained representative honours with the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ team. Matthew will look to his experienced fellow forwards such as Connor McKee, Zach Slevin, Ross Maxwell and Adam Brennan to assist in guiding him through his first Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup game. These players are at the heart of a Bangor Grammar School pack that feels, on its day, it can compete on an equal footing with any other pack in the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. The Bangor Grammar School back line will be hoping their pack will be able to produce the quality possession they thrive on. With players such as team captain, Robert Gamble, Jonny Baxter, Jamie Fulton, Shaun Fair and Aaron Corbett all returning from last season, there is a determination in the Bangor backs that suggests they would wish to go at least one stage further than last season when they lost out to Sullivan Upper in the 3rd Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. Home advantage can mean a lot in cup matches and the Bangor Grammar School team will see their home tie against Dalriada as one they can win.
The Dalriada School team, coached by Rab Gregg and Benjy Van Der Byl, is another team that is comprised of a good mixture of youth and experience when the age make up of the squad is examined. They are the current holders of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Subsidiary Shield but feel they could cause a few surprises in this season’s Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. Captained by Michael Finnerty, a player who leads by example from his full-back position, they have an exciting back line that has caused problems for opposition defences this season. Matthew McConnaghie and Angus Johnston form a very effective half back partnership, one that is encouraged to look for the positive option at all times. Aaron Sparks has had a great season with his place kicking and is only too willing to punish any team that causes indiscretions. Michael Finnerty has been among the leading try scorers for the team this season. He will be delighted to add to his tally against Bangor Grammar School. Aaron Christy, Matthew Christy, Scott Malcolmson and Alan Montgomery are among the players returning in the Dalriada pack from their last Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup campaign. Alan Montgomery has played for the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ team and his work at the breakdown, alongside Matthew Christy and Scott Malcolmson, will be seen as crucial if the Dalriada team is to progress in the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup competition.
This game is scheduled to kick off at 11-00am.

Carrickfergus Grammar School had the combined talents of their centre partnership of Christian Robinson and team captain, Jake Porter, to thank for their well-deserved victory against Lurgan College in the 1st Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup.
They were not really expected to win that game but the victory will have given the team every confidence as they prepare to host their near neighbours from Belfast Royal Academy in the 2nd Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. Adam Urquhart, Reece Berry and his twin brother, Kris, alongside Tom Gilpin and Scott Henderson, got through a lot of work in the Carrickfergus Grammar School pack in the course of their first round game. This ensured that Michael Black and David Carse, the Carrickfergus GS half backs, had sufficient quality possession to keep their talented centre partnership happy. The Carrickfergus Grammar School team coaches, Neal Kennedy and Stuart Martin, will be looking for more of the same when it comes to the game against the Belfast Royal Academy team. They will tell their players they have nothing to lose and to use the positive experiences gained from their 1st Round victory to good effect. The draw for the 3rd Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup will take place at Carrickfergus Grammar School after the 2nd Round games have finished. The Carrickfergus Grammar School team would love to get one over their illustrious neighbours in the 2nd Round encounter and, by doing so, would have their names in the draw for the 3rd Round games.
If the Carrickfergus Grammar School team can boast of the services of one Schoolboy International Athlete in Christiasn Robinson, then the Belfast Royal Academy team can boast of three. Team coaches, Chris McCarey and David Creighton can call upon the services of Scott McMurtry, an International Hammer Thrower, as well as Matthew Dalton and Stephen McCorry, both NI Age Grade International Athletes in the Shot Putt and Hammer events. The BRA team had a difficult start to the season due to a large number of players unavailable for selection due to a variety of reasons. They had a tough fixture list with which to contend but a series over good wins in the latter stages of the first term, and the return to play of a number of key individuals, seems to have lifted the gloom which was hanging over Roughfort. Team captain, David Campbell, is an Age Grade Representative Ulster player who plays in the centre. He thrives on a supply of quality possession and, if he gets it, his contest with the Carrickfergus midfield will be worth watching. He is surrounded by talented players in the BRA backline. Michael Wilson reads a game well and is a very talented place kicker while Matthew Dalton has been working with the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ U17 squad. The Belfast Royal Academy pack has key figures such as David O’Donnell Anderson, Matthew Bourne and Rakeem Marica in their front row with Luke Auterson, Cormnac McCracken and Tim Robinson rotating the 2nd Row responsibilities. The BRA backrow has the talents of players such as Scott McMurtry, David Reid and, in particular, Gareth McAdam to call upon. They will all need to be at their best if they are to prevent the Carrickfergus Grammar School team from causing another upset.
This game is scheduled to kick off at 10-30am.

The Down High School squad has lost eleven of the team that reached the Quarter-Final stage of the 2014 Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup competition. This was the best ever achievement by a Down High School team. The loss of these players has been offset by the elevation of players from the Down High School Medallion squad that contested the semi-finals of last season’s Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Shield competition. The Down High School coaching team of Charlie Knox and John Gunston has developed a squad that has made some of their more established opposition teams sit up and take notice this season. Victories against schools such as Bangor Grammar School, Regent House and Belfast Royal Academy, all former winners of the Ulster Schools’ Cup, have put the Down High School squad into a very positive frame of mind as they prepare to welcome another former winner, Rainey Endowed School, for their 2nd Round game in the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. This clash is a re-run of last season’s clash involving these two teams. The Down High School team won that game away from home. Home advantage this season has put the entire squad into looking upon themselves as favourites. Team captain, Nathan Gibson, is part of a pack of forwards that is secure at set piece time as well as clever at the breakdown. He gets great support from the experienced such as Aaron Chambers, Harry McCormack, Duncan Ross, Mark Hanna and Patrick Preston, all of whom were involved last season. Zac Ward, son of former Ulster and Ireland backrow forward, Andy, has made a seamless transition from the demands of Medallion rugby to the demands of 1stxv rugby. He is a member of the Ulster Schools’ U17 Development squad and seems to have the skill set to go a good deal further. Co-captain, Ross Carlisle, an Ulster U19 Squad member, is a member of a back division that includes Patrick Browne and John Hyndman, both members of the Ulster Schools’ U17 Development squad. Thomas Forson, Jamie Gibson, Rory Kerr and Joe Bingham join Ross in bringing experience to the backline. In Joe Bingham, the Down High School team has a very accurate place kicker. They will all look forward to emulating the success of last year’s team and, indeed, would be keen to take things at least one step further this season.
The Rainey Endowed School team has been hampered with injuries throughout the season. Team coaches, Chris Campbell, Peter Boyle and Stuart McCalmont, feel they could be a match for any team if they were able to get their full strength team onto the pitch. The Rainey School has built up a formidable reputation over the years for their desire, commitment and passion when it comes to Schools’ Cup time. They have experienced success in years gone by with Chris a former winner of the Ulster Schools’ Cup’ when a pupil at the school. He knows his team will be seen as the underdogs as they prepare to travel to Co Down for this Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup clash. The underdog status will suit the Rainey Endowed team just fine. Captain, Calvin Smyth, leads a team that has experienced success against teams like Dalriada and Royal School, Armagh in the course of the season so far. His pack includes the talented Anton Lupari, a member of the Ulster Schools’ U18 Training Squad.. He will look for support from fellow forwards such as Neal Hastings, Cameron Stewart, Adam Currie and Timothy Shiels when they come up against the dynamic Down High School pack. If the Rainey Endowed School pack can, at least, gain parity with the Down High School pack, the Rainey backline contains some talented players. Scott Campbell, son of team coach, Chris, is an experienced scrum half who would be delighted to reverse the result of last season’s game. Twins, Rory and Andrew Nicholl, have developed into a useful partnership on the pitch while Mark Rooney will hope his game management skills can match up to his time management skills. As well as being a vital member of the Rainey Endowed School team, Mark is also a highly regarded member of the Cookstown Senior Hockey X1 as well as experiencing success with the Tyrone Gaelic Minor team. The Rainey Endowed School team will be no respecters of reputation when it comes to Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup time. They will travel to play Down High School determined to reverse the result of the equivalent game last season. Due to on-going work on the Down High School pitches the venue for this game has been switched to Ballymacarn Park, home of Ballynahinch Rugby Club.

This game is scheduled to kick off at 11-00am at Ballynahinch Rugby Club..
The Regent House players had to work hard before they were able to overcome the challenge mounted by the Royal School, Dungannon team when the teams met in the previous round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. Having come through that tough encounter the Regent House team will be happy to see themselves as favourites as they prepare to host the Foyle and Londonderry College team in the next round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup on January 24th. The Regent House captain, Jonny Harris, led his team by example against the RS Dungannon team and scored one of the tries in that game. He will need to adopt a similar approach when it comes to the game against Foyle College. It was the Regent House pack that laid the foundations for the victory in their last Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup match. Aaron May scored the first try of the game and it was the strength of the Regent House pack that presented him with the opportunity. Team coaches, Peter Lowry and Mervyn Tweed, reckon that, on their day, this Regent House pack can compete with anyone. Alongside Jonny Harris, Kyle Van Geison, Tommy Scullion, Conn Crawford and Robin Brown put in impressive performances against the RS Dungannon team. The lineout was efficient while the scrum was strong. The Regent House backline can boast of having a number of talented players in the ranks. The prevailing weather conditions in the last round may have mitigated against the Regent House backs getting into full flow. However, with players such as Taylor Nutt, Aaron May, Davy Jamieson and Matthew Stanex, the Regent House team can cause problems for the opposition defences. They will be hoping for the appropriate conditions to allow them to do so on Saturday.
The Foyle and Londonderry College team will hope to replicate some of the positive form that saw them successfully overcome the not insignificant challenge provided by Larne Grammar School in the last round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. The Foyle College team started strongly and then the Larne team staged a superb recovery to reduce the arrears to just one score at a critical stage of the game. The Foyle College team, superbly well led by their captain, Alex McDonnell, will aim to build up a lead that cannot be reduced on Saturday. They will be happy to enter this game as underdogs, secure in the knowledge they have players in their squad who are well capable of causing an upset. Alex was a hat-trick hero against the Larne Grammar School team but it was the performance of his brother, Callum, which also caught the eye. The Foyle College coaching team, David Barnett and Ray Menown, will travel to Regent House secure in the knowledge their players want to experience more of the taste of success. Robbie House turned in a fine performance against the Larne Grammar School team as did Jack McNeill, Thomas Cole and Lee Brady. All of these players will need to be monitored closely through the game by the Regent House players if the Foyle and Londonderry College team is not to pull off what would be seen as a major shock at the end of the game. The end result of this game will ensure a Round 1 entrant will progress to the draw for Round 3 of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup.
This game is scheduled to kick off at 11-00am.

There will be a second Round 1 entrant going into the draw for the 3rd Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup when the final outcome of the Round 2 game involving Portadown College and Limavady Grammar School is known. Both these teams were expected to come through their first round games and both did!!
The Portadown College team had to work hard for their first round victory against a Friends’ School, Lisburn team that, had they taken their chances in the first half of the game, might have put a different complexion on the final score. However, the Portadown College team did not panic and controlled the game for large parts of the second half. It was the experienced head of the Portadown College captain, Niall Davidson, who pulled his team through. Having travelled to Lisburn as favourites in Round 1, the Portadown Collerge squad will be even more comfortable with the tab as they prepare to host the Limavady Grammar School team. The Portadown College team lost their experienced flanker, Sam White, top a non-contact injury prior to that game. This provided the opportunity for Stuart Hodgen to make his Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup debut somewhat earlier than he expected. Stuart played a leading role in the success his team experienced and he will be hoping for more of the same on Saturday. The Portadown coach, AndrewSymington, had to play the Friends’ game without the services of his leading try scorer, Number 8, Jacob McKeeman. His expected return to the Portadown College ranks, for the game against Limavady Grammar School, will be seen as a major boost to the hopes of the boys from the Co-Armagh! Alongside Niall Davidson, Michael Orr, Jordan Dowds, Jason Lau and Neal Ingram all impressed with their performances in the Portadown College back division against the Friends’ School team. If their pack of forwards can, at least, gain parity with the Limavady pack in the set pieces and work hard at the breakdown, the Portadown College backline could have a considerable bearing on the eventual outcome of this game.
The Limavady Grammar School team is undergoing a considerable transition from where the team has been in recent seasons. Their narrow, but hard-earned and deserved victory, against a committed Wellington College team in the first round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup, is testament to the hard work being done by the coaching staff of Chris Nash, Sam Vallelly and Brian Hughes. Having seen the vast majority of the successful team from the previous season finish their time at Limavady Grammar School, the coaches knew they would have a lot of work to do. The first thing they did was to appoint one of the few returnees, Scott McLean, as team captain. This has turned out to be an inspired choice. Scott had led his young colleagues superbly well all season. Through good games, as well as not so good games, his standards of play and leadership have never fallen. He has displayed great game management skills as well as being one of the most effective place kickers at Schoolboy level in the province. In the course of the first round game against Wellington College, Scott got great support from players such as Oliver Mullan, Gus McIntosh and Alan Wilson, Alan came on as a replacement player and his arrival seemed to galvanise and raise the performance of the Limavady Grammar School pack. It was a combination of skill from Scott McLean and hard work from the Limavady pack that led, eventually, to the winning score against Wellington College. There will need to be more of the same if the Limavady Grammar School team is to be in a position to enter the draw for the Danake Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup 3rd Round.
This game is scheduled to kick off at 11-00am.

The Royal School, Armagh team will host Belfast High School at the College Hill venue in the second round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. The Royal School, Armagh team, having recently inflicted a defeat on the Belfast High School team, will see themselves as clear favourites to win this game. Team coaches, Gareth Beggs and David Dougherty, will hope their young charges will be able to handle the tag of being “favourites” in a positive manner. Their recent victory against the Belfast High School team was well-deserved and one that brought to mind the talent that exists within the ranks of this young Royal School, Armagh squad. Philip Matthews brings the experience of having played for Ulster Schools earlier in the season. He is the leading light in a Royal School, Armagh pack that is improving with every game. Grant Hutchinson, James McSorley and Oliver McAlpine were all involved last season and will be able to bring their experience to bear when providing support to Philip. The RS Armagh team captain, Michael Thompson, can call upon some experienced fellow backs, such as Jack Campbell, Josh Agnew, Kenneth Graham and Matthew McSorley, to assist him with his leadership responsibilities. Josh Agnew will hope to have his brother David available for selection on the opposite wing but David may not have recovered from an injury setback on time. The McSorley brothers, James and Matthew, participate together in the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup for the second year in a row. They will be keen to assist in maintaining the proud tradition by Royal School, Armagh teams in the recent past. The RS Armagh Senior Teacher, the redoubtable Kenny Hooks, will not be as directly involved in the preparation of the RS Armagh team for this game in as he has been for many of the previous seasons. He has taken on a heavy workload at Senior Management level that has restricted his input with the team. However, should any player, or coach, in the Royal School need advice regarding the preparation required for a Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup game, Kenny will no doubt be on hand to give it.
The Belfast High School team has lost a large number of players involved in the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup last season. Despite this, they have still got twelve players in the squad this season that have experienced the delights of success in the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. Despite their recent loss to the Royal School, Armagh team, there is an air of optimism surrounding the Belfast High School squad as they prepare for what will, undoubtedly, be a tough encounter. The Belfast High School coaches, Michael Rainey and David Scott, have brought on board the expertise of Strength and Conditioning coach, Rory Bremner, as well as the analytical expertise of Joe Rice, to assist their players in being prepared to the highest possible levels for the trip to Armagh. Team captain, Joel McBride, son of former Malone RFC, Ulster and Ireland Flanker, Denis, is a most creative young player. His talents have been recognised by the Ulster Schools’ Management team and his performance will need to be monitored closely by the RS Armagh players on Saturday. As well as being a very creative player, Joel is also an outstanding place kicker who will delight in punishing any Royal School, Armagh indiscretions committed within his range. James Creighton, the Belfast High School vice-captain, forms a very effective half back partnership with Joel. They have the ability to bring the best out of Belfast High School backs such as Ryan Huntley, Adam Kelso, Connor McWhirter and Darren Scott. These players have all scored tries for the Belfast High School team this season. They will be looking for more on Saturday. The Belfast High School pack will be aware of their responsibilities in the provision of quality ball for their backs on Saturday. Sam McBride and Tyler Arnold, both members of the Ulster Schools’ U17 Development panel, will have a central role to play in this regard. They will look to the experience of fellow forwards such as Adam Mitchell, Andrew Sinclair, Connor Elliott, Ross Neill and Andrew Walker to assist them in getting the quality possession required. If they are successful there could be a shock outcome to this game.
This game is scheduled to kick off at 10-30am.

The Portora Royal School team has a new coaching team on board as they prepare for the visit of Banbridge Academy in the 2nd Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup on Saturday 24th January. Rhys Botha and Ashley Finlay know they have a more than capable squad of players with which to work but one they have rarely been able to put on the pitch at full strength this season. Loss of players to injury and non-availability has, at times, hampered the progress of the Portora RS team. The team displayed some good form in their early season games and chalked up some impressive victories. The Portora coaching team hope to have a full squad of players available for selection on Saturday. If they do, there will be a great deal confidence in the Portora RS camp as they prepare for this Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup match, Team captain, Jamie Gibson, leads the team from the hooker position. He has two very good props in Jamie McKee and Marcus Crawford alongside him. The Portora break away trio of Andrew Crawford, Josh Kennedy and Matthew Dane gets through a lot of work and are very effective at the breakdown. The talents of Josh and Matthew have been recognised by their inclusion in the Ulster Schools’ U17’s Development squad. Andrew’s brother, Alistair, is the Portora RS term vice-captain. Working with Adam Lendrum and Connor Keys in the Portora midfield, Alistair has created many try scoring opportunities for his outside backs during the season. Full back, Robert Baloucoune, has benefitted greatly from the creativity of his inside backs. Connor Keys and Josh Kennedy have excelled in the sport of rowing as well. They are both members of a Junior Eight that won honours at Ulster and Ireland level last year. Home advantage will mean a lot and the Portora Royal School team will look forward to welcoming the Banbridge Academy team to the Fermanagh Lakelands.
The Banbridge Academy team displayed great attacking prowess when they defeated a resilient Antrim Grammar School team in the 1st Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. They scored seven tries in the course of that game with both forwards and backs getting in on the act. It was the strength of the Banbridge pack that laid the foundations for the victory against Antrim Grammar School with team captain, Matthew Bell leading the way. Peter Heaney had an excellent game in the second row and both these players were among the try scorers. Scrum half, Jay Pinion, created a formidable half back partnership with Ben Carson. These players converted the quality possession won by their pack into territory. They also managed to find time to touch down for one try apiece. However, it was in the wide channels where the Banbridge Academy team looked most dangerous. Jordan Mount, Michael McGaffin and Daniel McElderry all displayed great determination when they got the ball into their hands. Michael McGaffin ended the game with two tries to his credit while Daniel McElderry scored one. Jordan Mount played a big part in the build up to all three of these tries. Daniel was also successful with five out of seven conversion attempts. He is an excellent place kicker and the Portora RS discipline will need to be good, in key areas of the pitch, for the entire game. Brian Leslie and Roy Stevenson, the Banbridge Academy coaches, know their players got a great deal of positive experience from their victory against the Antrim Grammar School team. They will hope that their players can carry that into their next Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup game in Enniskillen.
This game is scheduled to kick off at 11-00am.

The Grosvenor Grammar School team travelled to play Cambridge House in the first round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup. They came away from that game with a 25-3 victory and a deserved place in the second round of the competition. The Grosvenor Grammar School coaches, Gary Hunter and Andrew Gibson, will tell their young squad that their forthcoming 2nd Round game in the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup against a very strong Omagh Academy team will be an all-together different proposition. They will hope the positive experience gained with their Round 1 victory will assist the squad as they prepare for the encounter with Omagh Academy. The Grosvenor Grammar School team led from very early in the game against Cambridge House. Good ball protection from the kick-off presented Caleb Montgomery with the opportunity to score a try with just a minute on the clock. Mark Johnston, Thomas Quinn and Daniel Mayhew all scored tries against Cambridge House and will be delighted to do so against the Omagh Academy team on Saturday. James Cartilage, Ben Davidson, Taylor Pollock and Jordan McDowell all featured strongly in the performance of the Grosvenor Grammar School pack in the previous round. They will need a repeat performance on Saturday. Gareth Lammey and Jonah McDowell will have to impress alongside Thomas Quinn and Mark Johnston if the Grosvenor Grammar School backline is to make any impression against a well-organised Omagh Academy defence when the teams meet in an eagerly anticipated clash on Saturday.
The Omagh Academy team will accept the title of favourites as they prepare to travel to play Grosvenor Grammar School on Saturday. Team coach, Ross Hunter, can call upon the vast wealth of Ulster Schools’ Cup coaching experience that his “mentor” Jackie Reid brings to the table. They have a squad of players that is keen to do well. They have caused many upsets in the games they have played this season and can see no reason why the Omagh Academy team cannot be in then draw for the 3rd Round of the Danske Bank Ulster’ Schools’ Cup. Team captain, Adam Stephenson, has seen his players come through with eleven victories out of the fourteen games they have played this season. They defeated a strong RBAI “Select” xv early in the season, a win that laid down a positive marker for this Omagh Academy team. In true Omagh Academy fashion, it has been the performances of the pack that have laid the foundations for the success the team has experienced. Ulster Schools’ RDS members, Joshua McKinley and James Longwell, nephew of former Ulster and Ireland 2nd Row Forward, Gary, are both key members of an Omagh Academy pack that can also boast pf the talents of players such as Matthew Sproule, Jonny Anderson and Matthew Clyde. These players will be under pressure to produce quality possession so that Fintan Lagan and team vice-captain, Stuart Ballentine, can bring their exciting backs into play. Adam Stephenson has scored fifteen tries this season with Andrew Monteith not far behind. Chris Hemphill and Dean Kane are two more Omagh Academy backs that love to get the ball in their hands. There is more to this Omagh Academy team than just forward power. Stuart Ballentine, as well as displaying good game management skills, also displays great ability will the ball off the tee. He will be delighted to add to the eighty points he has scored already in games this season.
This game is scheduled to kick off at 11-00am.
