Armagh travelled to Carrickfergus to play a friendly on Friday evening. Armagh turned out to be the winners by scoring four tries to Carrick’s two penalties.
It was a game organised by coach, Andy Hughes, to welcome newcomers to the Armagh side. Indeed, the game enabled him to use all the many replacements and observe their fitness. In many cases, players were moved to unusual positions to observe their capacity.
The backs moved the ball well and created several good scoring opportunities for the wingers. Two spectacular tries resulting. The forwards did not show as much ability in the line-outs as was evident last season but the return of James Morton from honeymoon duties should improve matters.
Try scorers were Joe Clarke, Matthew Maguire, Johnny Steenson and Freddie Cuttle. None were converted.
