The IBS-sponsored Carrick Under 19s travelled to Shaw’s Bridge on Thursday evening (29/12/2011) in a friendly match against Instonians. After a quick start Carrick took the lead with a try from Reece Hamilton after good work from the pack who gained vital yards in order for Reece to score easily out wide. The try was unconverted by Adam Kendall. After a great start a few mistakes started to show within the Carrick ranks which led to Instonians gaining the advantage with 2 quick fire tries within 3 minutes making the score 14-5 at Half-time.
After the break Carrick started again very brightly with the forwards making the hard yards and this proved vital with Carrick crossing the whitewash with pack leader Jonathan Murray scoring, on this occasion the try was converted by fly half Adam Kendall. With Carrick trailing by 14-12 at this stage, they fought hard upfront with the whole pack leading by example in defence with some hard hits. The efforts which the Carrick team had went through paid off when Ryan McKay crossed the line for what was to be the final and vital try for the Carrick team. The try was unconverted by Adam Kendall. With time running out for the opposition bad discipline cost them and fly half Adam Kendall confidently slotted over the winning points with a straight forward penalty kick.
With 5 minutes to go Instonians pressured Carrick’s line, however good defence and discipline survived a “late scare” and for the second occasion against the Belfast side Carrickfergus Under 19’s came out victorious winning by 20 points to 14.
