With social distancing guidelines relaxing and increased freedoms in sight, among the excitement, many of us may be feeling anxious about socialising up close and personal again.
As we start to travel into work again, sit inside restaurants and even hug, now is a great time to remind ourselves of the importance of good immune health with tips on how to boost our natural defences.

Higher Nature has launched its Immune Effervescent – a natural, elderberry flavoured drink, to boost immune health. Containing immune essentials vitamin c, zinc and a high-strength active form of vitamin D3, the Immune Effervescent delivers comprehensive support to keep the immune system in its prime. Ideal for seasonal support, all year round, the Immune Effervescent can be taken every day or during times of challenge.

Higher Nature nutritionist, Corin Sadler, says:

“Last year, especially during the first lockdown, there was a big focus on immunity with an increased uptake of supplements, such as vitamin D. However, we really should be looking to support our immunity on a daily basis, all the year round, especially as we get back to socialising with friends, colleagues and family. There are many easy and natural ways to do this so we can feel more confident in enjoying our new found freedoms this summer.”

Corin’s top tips for boosting immunity:

1. Stay active
Exercise contributes to overall good health that, in turn, supports the immune system. Try and do some form of exercise each day, preferably outdoors, which can reduce stress and promote good sleep.

2. Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water helps to flush out toxins, transport nutrients around the body and protect the immune system. Try replacing caffeinated or sugary drinks with herbal teas to up your water intake. Alcohol can also be dehydrating so if you are planning to celebrate the end of lockdown, make sure you drink plenty of water.

3. Sleep well
The immune system’s ability to fight off infection and make protective antibodies rely on good sleep. Adults should aim for 7-8 hours of good quality sleep each night and not getting enough can cause us to feel run-down. Ensure a good night’s sleep by setting healthy habits such as a consistent bedtime to reinforce your body’s sleep cycle, switching off tablets and mobiles an hour before bed to help the wind-down process and removing other distractions such as clutter, laptops and TVs.

4. Give your immune system a helping hand
People often ask which is the best supplement to boost the immune system – vitamin C, vitamin D or zinc? All three actually work great together to give comprehensive support. Higher Nature’s Immune Effervescent (20 tablets for £5.95) contains high-strength vitamins C, D and zinc and is flavoured naturally with black elderberry to keep the immune system in its prime. Ideal for seasonal support, all year round, it can be taken every day or during times of challenge.

5. Listen to your gut
With 70% of our immune system located in the gut1, it’s unsurprising that if our digestive system is not running smoothly, we may not feel our best. Take care of your gut with plenty of fruit and vegetables and stomach-healing foods such as kefir, kimchi, live yoghurt and a good probiotic. Higher Nature’s Pro-Intensive (90 capsules for £9.75) which contains 4 strains of well-researched “friendly” probiotic bacteria provides 9 billion organisms per daily dose, to support a healthy balance of gut flora.

6. Relax…
Stress puts a real strain on our immune system’s ability to fight off antigens, making us more vulnerable to infection. Take time out each day to do something that relaxes you, whether that’s an early morning yoga session or a mindfulness podcast before bed and aim for a healthy work-life balance – especially important as many of us continue to work from home.

7. And laugh!
Research consistently shows laughing helps activate natural killer cells, SIgA levels and gamma interferons – all measures of immune function. So go ahead and have some fun in the full knowledge you are giving your immune system a wonderful boost!
