Blooming Artificial

With term time just around the corner, students around the UK are getting ready to deck out their new digs for the year. Interest in uni room decor has experienced a 60% spike according to latest Google search data, with freshers to final-year-veterans wanting to know how to style their spaces.
Decor is key for Gen Z, with #decor, #decoration, and #roomdecor, currently the top 3 home-improvement trends on Tiktok. And with stress-relieving qualities, plants are one decor item that students will benefit from in more ways than one. Unfortunately, many a student-purchased plant has had its fate sealed from day 1 (mine included), with only the luckiest greenery surviving post-Christmas. Luckily, studies have shown artificial plants to have similar anxiety-reducing benefits without the added stress of upkeep, making faux-liage the perfect low-maintenance replacement.

Blooming Artificial: Artificial Boston Fern – 50cm, £21.50

Dubbed the ‘The quintessential houseplant’, and one of Blooming Artificial’s best-sellers, this versatile fern will instantly brighten any room and add immediate homeliness to student spaces. Whilst real Boston ferns are notoriously susceptible to mites and need very specific soil and sunlight conditions to grow, this one requires nothing but an occasional flick of a duster, making it the perfect option for student living.
Blooming Artificial: Mini Artificial Fiddle Leaf – 55cm, £28

The IT plant of the decade, the miniature fiddle leaf packs its usual style in a small package – making it a great choice when space is valuable! Featuring gorgeous green foliage with intricate vein detailing, the fab faux defeats all the usual woes like brown spots, light demands and watering schedules, so you be sure to come back to a healthy plant post visits home.
Blooming Artificial: Artificial Monkey Monstera Garland – 110cm, £17

This cheeky monkey is perfect for transforming an empty shelf, bed frame, or window sill into a tropical feature – and even better for bringing life into a newly decorated room. Naturally this beauty loves bright light, regular watering and frequent misting but if your uni halls are anything like ours were, a real monstera would more likely end up a brown wilted mess! Instead, this artificial garland offers all the style and tropical beauty of the real deal, without the high maintenance.
Blooming Artificial: Artificial Onion Grass – 46-80cm, £9-£18

This artificial onion grass makes the dream housemate! With practically no care needed, you can use it as an easy way to fill in gaps and empty spaces around your room. Its bushy green foliage is great for adding timeless, Scandi-style colour to your space, with just enough browned leaves to add to its lifelike look that your real housemates might fall for its authenticity.
You can check out Blooming Artificial’s full range of desktop plants here.
About Blooming Artificial
Blooming Artificial is the UK’s go-to retailer of artificial plants, trees and flowers, with a reputation for top quality products and service at affordable prices.

Have you ever come across a graphic-driven novel that teaches the importance of money mindfulness for families? Typically, graphic novels are geared towards children and focus on a superhero with superpowers to fight off an enemy with no further meaning. Author and dad, David Delisle doesn’t have an ordinary story or book for that matter. Introducing, The Golden Quest, the first children’s graphic novel themed around money mindfulness. What you will find in The Golden Quest is a universal message of finding your ‘awesome stuff’ through a money mindfulness lens. It tells the story of a young boy and his dog, Shelby, embarking on a quest to follow a treasure map learning the Golden Rules of personal finance.

The book was quietly released in 2022 but we’re officially announcing it to the world for 2023 and hoping to bring the story and therefore concept to every child in the world this year. It is for sale for $22.99 on Amazon and at theawesomestuff.com.

Another cool aspect of The Golden Quest is that 20% of proceeds will be donated to the charity GiveDirectly; the first, and largest, nonprofit that lets donors send money directly to the world’s poorest to spend on medicine, school fees, water, solar lights, businesses to generate income, and more. This is just one example of author David’s mindset around money and what’s most important.

CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST REVEALS TOP FIVE BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS
• Parenting specialist Dr Linda Papadopoulos shares expert insight
• Partnership marks new nationwide Wacky Warehouse school uniform donation scheme

To help ease the back-to-school stresses, renowned family psychologist, Dr Linda Papadopoulos, has teamed up with Wacky Warehouse to reveal her five tips and tricks to help parents and guardians ease their children into the new school term.

The latest research from the UK’s leading soft play party venue and activity centre reveals the scale of anxiety UK parents and children feel at this time of year – with settling in (33%), making friends (30%) and new teachers (25%) the top three concerns for parents during the back-to-school season.

The renowned psychologist has partnered with Wacky Warehouse to raise awareness of its new uniform donation scheme. The scheme follows research showing four in ten parents (40%) will struggle to pay for their child’s school uniform this year due to the cost of living crisis.

To donate, simply take your pre-loved school uniform to your nearest Wacky Warehouse across 69 sites and drop it in the designated donation station between 17th July – 3rd September.

Here are Dr Linda’s top back to school tips and tricks for parents:

1. ROUTINE, ROUTINE, ROUTINE
Stability is essential for all children. That’s why maintaining a routine, especially in the run-up to the new school term, is so important, so those early mornings don’t come as too much of a shock!
Maintaining a regular sleep schedule is also key to children’s development. However, getting back into the swing of things after the summer holiday can be difficult, so start easing your child back into a term time sleep routine a week ahead of time.

2. PLAY IS THE WAY
Encourage your child to socialise with their peers ahead of the back-to-school season so they’re emotionally prepared for the new term. Play is a great way to do this – also boosting cognitive and social development!

3. ENCOURAGE OPEN COMMUNICATION & CREATE A SAFE SPACE
Your children want to be listened to. If they are experiencing stresses or anxieties around the back-to-school season, the first thing you need to do is hear them.
What’s more, when you listen, it’s important to do so in a non-judgemental environment, so your child feels like they can speak their mind freely. If not, you run the risk of shutting your child off which may prevent them from sharing their feelings and worries.

4. SHARING IS CARING
Help your child relate to you by sharing some of your own personal positive experiences of being in school. Seeing their mum, dad or guardian open up will help them understand that their own feelings are normal.
You can also try reframing anxiety as excitement. Let them know their feelings are understandable – and that they could signal something positive, new and exciting!

5. GET ORGANISED AND CONSIDER A TRIAL RUN
Back to school anxieties can be exacerbated by a fear of the unknown. However, you can help to ease these concerns by getting your child’s uniform and school things ready well in advance.
Discussing their first day back in a positive way and doing a trial run of the trip into class is also a great way to ease any stresses and ensure the day feels less daunting and more familiar.

HOW TO GIVE YOUR CHILD THE BEST CHANCE POSSIBLE OF A GOOD NIGHT’S REST
SLEEP EXPERT REVEALS HOW TO IMPLEMENT A SLEEP SCHEDULE AHEAD OF THE NEW SCHOOL TERM

Although the summer holidays are in full swing, the start of term will soon be upon us, with parents swapping late bedtimes for early nights for their kids to prepare for a busy next day at school.

With a sleep routine playing an important role to your child’s attention-span and education, Silentnight Sleep Expert, Sally Bonser, has shared some tips to help parents encourage a positive sleep routine to give the best chance possible for a productive school week, when term comes around:

“Lots of parents are happy for their children to have a later bedtime during the holidays, as they typically aren’t waking up as early for school the following day. Children aged between 6-12 need 9-12 hours of sleep each night, in order to provide them with the best productivity and energy levels for school. Therefore, it is all the more important for an earlier bedtime to be implemented during the new school term.

“To guarantee that your kids are waking up at the right time and getting enough sleep each night, during the final week of the school holidays gradually bring forward bedtime each night until it matches their usual termtime routine. By doing this, the initial shock of waking up earlier will be reduced, making for a better morning mood.

“The next step to introducing a healthy routine is to limit screen time before bed. Light from phone screens and the TV is a sure way to prevent sleep, meaning less exposure to technology is a must. Try to limit tech time to at least an hour before bed, with phones and iPads being removed from the room until the next day to avoid distractions. Replace the evening wind down time with an alternative activity such as reading.

“If your child struggles to fall asleep after a summer of fun and later nights, make sure that their bedroom is a space which has an optimum sleep environment. Consider using black out blinds if the curtains are letting in too much light during the earlier evenings, this will block any unnecessary sun from shining through and preventing sleep.

“Finally, to guarantee a well-rested night’s sleep, ensure your child’s bedding is as comfortable as can be to suit their sleep style. The Silentnight Healthy Growthy Breathable Pillow features mesh sides to increase airflow, ideal for those who tend to get a little hot during the night. For those who need a little calm before sleep, the Silentnight Healthy Growth Calming Duvet is 40% heavier than a standard duvet, this provides a hug-like feeling to promote a deeper sleep.”

THIS IS THE EXACT DATE PARENTS SHOULD START GETTING THEIR CHILD INTO A REGULAR BACK TO SCHOOL SLEEP ROUTINE

• Children lose out on two full days of sleep over the summer holidays
• August 26th is the date to kickstart the usual term time sleep routine, says Silentnight Sleep Expert
• Top four back to school sleep tips for parents revealed

A sleep expert from the UK’s most trusted sleep brand, Silentnight has revealed the exact day this month that parents should start getting their child into a regular back to school sleep routine ahead of the new term.

This follows research showing primary school-aged children miss out on two full days of sleep over the summer holidays due to the fun and festivities of holiday season resulting in later bedtimes.

The study from Silentnight found youngsters aged between four and eleven years old get an average of just six and a half hours of sleep per night during the holidays, compared to an average of seven and a half hours in term time, way below the recommended ten hours.

The nationwide survey further revealed when children return to school, it takes parents an average of nine days to get them back into their regular term time bedtime routine.

With most kids starting school on 4th September this year, that means parents need to start easing their little one back into a regular night-time routine on Saturday 26thAugust.

According to Silentnight Sleep Expert Hannah Shore, slowly implementing a term time routine will ensure that it’s less of a shock for your child when they go back to full days of learning.

Hannah said: “Going back to school can be disruptive for children and parents, especially when adapting from a school holiday routine to a structured school time routine.

“Primary school-aged children, depending on their age, need on average around 10 hours sleep per night, so it’s important they develop a strong sleep routine consisting of good quality, undisturbed sleep.

“Rapid eye movement (REM) is light sleep that links with memory consolidation, emotional processing and learning, whilst non rapid eye moment (NREM) sleep is deeper and restorative, meaning toxins are washed from our brains and growth hormones are released. We need a good mixture of the different types of sleep for our bodies to work optimally.

“In the run up to starting school again, there are lots of things that can be done to make bedtime less stressful, and help children feel more settled, whilst adapting to their new routines.”

Hannah and Silentnight, with support from children’s confidence and parent coach Natalie Costa, founder of Power Thoughts, have shared their top four back-to-school sleep tips:

1. Sleep is a superpower
Let your child know that sleep is their hidden superpower and that their brain loves sleep, even when they don’t feel like sleeping. Much like an iPad, if the battery is running low, you need to recharge the device.

2. Create a cosy sleep environment
Try to create a calm and relaxing space to help your child settle more easily at night. A tidy bedroom, a special pillow, blanket or a lamp with a soft glow can encourage your child to feel cosier and more settled at nighttime.

3. Calm the worries
Bedtime can often be a time when children share their worries of the day. Help your child work through these worries by getting them to journal or draw out what’s on their mind. Try and supplement this with conversations about your child’s emotions throughout the day.

4. Focus on breathing
Soothe any negative feelings by focusing on breathing to help calm any nervousness or anxiety. Teach your child to breath into their belly by taking slow, deep breaths, in through their nose and slowly exhaling through their mouth. Make sure to gently guide them through the process to help them understand the technique and its purpose.

Graduates named as match officials for key
matches at rugby union’s 2023 World Cup
University of Gloucestershire graduates Matthew Carley and Christophe Ridley have been appointed as match officials for key fixtures involving many of the leading nations at rugby union’s 2023 World Cup, in a major milestone for a groundbreaking scholarship programme.
Matthew and Christophe were both part of the sports scholarship programme at the University on the officiating pathway – the only one of its kind in the UK – headed up by former World Cup referee Chris White.
World Rugby have named the duo among the team of match officials for the 40 matches that comprise the pool stage of the 2023 World Cup – the first time two graduates of the University’s unique scholarship scheme have been selected to officiate at the showpiece tournament.
They include matches involving defending champions South Africa, three-time champions New Zealand, tournament hosts France and 2019 World Cup semi-finalists Wales.

Sport Science graduate Matthew, who was the first person to complete a refereeing scholarship at the University, is the match referee for Wales versus Fiji on 10 September, France versus Namibia on 21 September, and New Zealand versus Italy on 29 September.
Matthew, who was an assistant referee at the 2019 World Cup hosted by Japan, will perform the same role for the matches between Georgia and Portugal on 23 September, South Africa and Tonga on 1 October, and New Zealand and Uruguay on 5 October.
Sports Coaching graduate Christophe has been announced as assistant referee for the match between France and New Zealand on 8 September, Wales versus Fiji on 10 September, Wales versus Australia on 24 September, New Zealand versus Italy on 29 September, defending champions South Africa versus Tonga on 1 October, and Tonga versus Romania on 8 October.

The appointments for the knockout rounds of the tournament will be announced after the pool stages.
Matthew and Christophe have gained immense experience on the international stage and as established referees in English rugby union’s top domestic competition, the Premiership, since graduating from the scholarship programme at the University.
Chris White, who was a referee at the 1999, 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cups, runs the referees and officials aspect of the sports scholarships programme at the University alongside his role as the RFU Professional Group of Match Officials Team (PGMOT) Referee coach.
Chris said: “Many congratulations to Matt and Christophe on their appointments as match officials for pool matches at the 2023 World Cup in France.
“Matt and Christophe have shown that with a strong work ethic, a determination to improve all aspects of performance, and dedication to being the best you can be, it is genuinely possible to fulfil your dreams.
“They’re both fantastic role models for our other graduates who are officiating at a high level, our young people currently on the scholarship programme and all those who will join us in future years.
“We’re going to be thrilled and immensely proud to watch the both in action, showing why they’re among the best match officials in the world, at the World Cup.”
The University’s sports scholarships help talented athletes, officials and aspiring coaches achieve their ambitions across a wide range of sports, including access to leading experts and current practitioners, and scholars are able to combine this bespoke support with any degree programme.
The University of Gloucestershire is the only university in the UK offering an officiating scholarship alongside studying for a degree. The other pathways focus on athletes and coaches.
Graduates of the programme also include Premiership rugby referee Anthony Woodthorpe, Championship rugby referee George Selwood, Championship football assistant referee Daniel Leach and Jade Wardle, who has officiated in the Women’s Super League, and Lauren Kianchehr, an international Boccia referee and Boccia England Performance Coach.
The University provides sports students with access to a wide range of programmes, expert lecturers, industry placements and graduate opportunities.

Mini Pizza Calzones

These little pockets of joy are an absolute delight, especially for packed lunches. Now, packed lunches are a fantastic and wallet-friendly choice, and when you add the unbeatable taste of Primula Cheese, you’re sure to satisfy those hungry tummies!

Serves: 6 mini calzones
Cooking time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:
– 500g plain flour
– 300ml water
– 5g dry instant yeast
– 40ml olive oil
– 11g salt
– 150g passata
– 1tbsp olive oil
– 1tsp dry oregano
– Salt and pepper as taste
– A pinch sugar
– 2 Primula Cheese tubes
– 70g ham
– 70g salami

Preparation:
1. Mix the water, salt, and olive oil in a jug.
2. Sift the flour into a stand mixer bowl and add the dry yeast. Hook attachment, mix at low speed for a few minutes, pour the water mixture slowly, and continue mixing everything at medium/low speed.
3. Once you have obtained a malleable dough, transfer it to a lightly floured work surface and knead it for about ten minutes to develop the gluten mesh, allowing you to get a pliable dough.
4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with clingfilm or a tea towel and let it rise in the oven for two hours.
5. Season the passata with 1 tbsp of olive oil, salt, pepper, sugar, and oregano.
6. When the quantity of the dough has tripled, divide it into six equal balls and work one portion at a time, keeping the others in the bowl covered.
7. Roll out the first ball of the dough into a small disc and transfer it to a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Spread a few tablespoons of passata on half the freshly rolled dough disc, then cover with salami slices and Primula Cheese. Fold the dough like a book to form a half-moon and seal the edges well to create a nice ledge. Repeat, filling some with ham.
8. Bake the mini calzones in a preheated fan oven at 180°C for 15-20 minutes or at 160°C in an air fryer for 12-16 minutes.
9. Serve the mini calzones warm or store them in an air-tight container overnight and consume them the next day.
