City of Derry III 54 – 24 Ballymoney III

On a perfect afternoon for running rugby the ‘mighty thirds’ ran in 8 tries to post a 50 point score line for the 2nd successive game this season. With a good mixture of youth and experience the thirds started the game with intent and scrum half Adam Kyle nipped over in the corner for the opening score after good approach work from Ian Bratton. ‘Junior’ Bratton was to have an outstanding game with the visitors unable to get a grip on his counter attacking runs.

Ballymoney did get themselves back in the game and took the lead with a converted try under the Derry posts. The hosts responded instantly with flanker Chris McHale breaking 2 tackles and showed real pace to score under the posts for Keys to convert the extras. Shortly after Ballymoney had a player sin-binned and Derry responded with Keys & Spratt combining to send David Devine past the cover defence to open up a 2 score lead going into half time.

Harsh words were spoke at half time and the hosts responded. Any chance Ballymoney had of coming back into the game was effectively ended within 10 minutes of the restart, with Derry running in 4 tries in quick succession. The Ballymoney backs had no answer to the pace of Derry’s back 3, Ian Bratton, Darren Taylor & Craig Inglis tore them to shreds on several occasions, with all 3 getting on the score sheet in the second half, Inglis picking up 2 tries courtesy of his trademark hand-off.

Sandwiched between these scores was a try for ‘man of the match’ Barney McLaughlin, who ran a great line through the smallest of gaps in the Ballymoney defence and broke a couple of tackles to score under the posts. Out half Richard keys helped himself to 12 points with the boot. Ballymoney did register a few late scores, gifted to them from ill discipline and poor fitness levels in the last 10 minutes. Derry have a week off to rectify these mistakes before they welcome Banbridge to Judges Road in a fortnight.
