Martin and Jamie: The Peace Process by Anne Ireland
Two lives collide in London when Martin, from Belfast, meets a Black hairdresser, Jamie. The two men muscle past their fear, and fall in love. When their world is shattered by a police raid on their supper club, both men must find the courage to stand and deliver for themselves, and for each other as Martin is arrested for cocaine possession, and Jamie rallies to defend him.
Martin is from Belfast, where he has been seriously harassed by the police. He has also suffered the trauma of his first lover’s brutal attack; he escapes to the safety of Kilburn, London, where he meets Jamie, a charismatic Black hairdresser. Despite cultural and racial differences, they fall in love; nine months into the relationship, their lives are disrupted when their supper club is raided by the police. Martin is found with cocaine planted it on him during the raid’s uproar. He is immediately arrested and convicted for drug possession with intent to sell; this forces him as never before to stand up for himself, as Jamie rallies the support of the LGBTQ+ community, and Martin’s family.
Martin and Jamie is a compelling narrative exploring themes of love, loyalty, and resilience in the struggle against injustice. It delves into the complexities of identity and belonging, and will resonate with anyone who has struggled with self-acceptance and understanding in a divisive, intolerant world.
