Kasbah Clothing is an online clothing retailer with the sole focus of providing comfortable yet stylish pieces for plus-size women. The business is the brainchild of renowned British designer Heather Griffiths-Benhrima, who resurrected the brand in 2019 after earlier successes almost 20 years ago as well as a long career designing for other successful plus size brands.
The brand’s design philosophy draws from the location where the business idea was originally dreamt up. Marrakech, Morocco; a vibrant city that Heather draws from whenever she is creating her next masterpiece.
Each piece of clothing is designed by Heather and handmade using fabrics sourced from Paris and Amsterdam by a small, dedicated team in Marrakesh. The finished garments are then shipped over to the UK team based in Lincolnshire, where they are sold via the website to customers in the United Kingdom and around the world.
Despite being a little over three years old in its latest incarnation, Kasbah Clothing has been growing steadily every year. The global pandemic was unable to halt the rapid progress of the brand, and there is plenty of reason to believe that Kasbah Clothing will reach the heights that it reached back in 2006, when it was then stocked in over 350 stores in the UK as well as France and Spain. The recruitment of plus-size fashion writer and influencer Becky Barnes as Creative Director has been instrumental in their recent expansion, as the business aims to reach more people and ramp up its marketing and advertising efforts.
Driven to pursue quality clothing at a midpoint price range, Kasbah Clothing produces vibrant styles that encapsulate their design origins through rich textures and bold prints. Heather Griffiths-Benhrima is a British designer based in Marrakech, Morocco. She is the founder of Kasbah Clothing, an online brand dedicated to providing stylish designs that fit and flatter the plus
size figure.
Heather’s focus is on providing plus-size women with timeless, quality clothing to fit a variety of body shapes and sizes. Heather pours her love into each and every design she creates.
Heather’s story starts whilst on holiday in the ancient Moroccan city. While Heather has always had a keen eye for fashion and an interest in design, it was this particular trip that kick started her career in the industry. The rich canvas of the country, as well as the bold patterns that she saw all around her, ignited a spark within her.
She met her now-husband Abdellatif on the same vacation; the couple briefly relocated to the UK in the 1990s, where they ran a Moroccan
Arts and Crafts store in the Lakeside Shopping Centre, Essex. They came to realise that their creations were not selling all year round and decided to add clothing to the store’s range, and this is where Heather’s career as a fashion designer began.
Determined to pursue her newfound calling in fashion, Heather returned to Marrakech in the hope of finding some support within the established fabric and manufacturing trade in the city. A small
manufacturer took notice of her natural ability and helped her to find her style as well as opening her eyes to every aspect of the business, from buying fabrics to pattern cutting.
It didn’t take long for her unique designs to capture the attention of boutique stores and retailers alike. It was a simple decision for Heather and Abdellatif to relocate permanently to Marrakech, where she could focus entirely on building her fledgling business. With the help of fellow designer Paula Keech and her sister Corinne, Heather would grow Kasbah Clothing to supply 350 shops across the UK, with 6 UK agents and 4 further agents in France and Spain by 2006.
When the recession hit the UK, Heather began designing for another successful UK plus size brand with whom she worked with until 2018. But during this time Heather felt she had lost creative control over
her designs and wanted to stay true to her original vision for Kasbah Clothing. And in 2019, Kasbah Clothing in its current incarnation, was born as an online plus size style retailer.
Heather and Abdellatif are also proud owners of Villa Dinari, an exclusive boutique hotel and venue for wellness, yoga and business retreats which they manage with the help of their fabulous and long serving team. Located on the outskirts of Marrakech, the hotel provides the perfect antidote to the crazy, exotic, hustle and bustle of this magical city.
