Cookstown 3-53 City of Derry Thirds
City of Derry were the visitors on Saturday afternoon at a rainy Drapersfield and came away with the bonus point victory against a make-shift Cookstown side who finished with 13 men on the pitch in the end due to injuries
The visitors took the lead with two early penalties the first given for hands in the ruck and the second for a high tackle. City of Derry scored the first try of the afternoon which was converted, however Weir kicked over three points to reduce the deficit
The score remained the same for a long time but a head injury to Mullan meant a rotation of personnel and the visitors took full advantage running in another unconverted try before the break in addition to another 3 points from the boot
Cookstown started the second half brightly getting a few phases together but City of Derry got the first score of the second half with a bonus point sealing try. This lifted the visitor’s spirts and got another converted try and had their centre sent to the bin for dangerous play on Kennedy but a bad injury to Blake meant the visitors meant the visitors where able to take full advantage running in a number of late tries
Despite the referee giving the hosts the option to blow up early Cookstown bravely fought on to the end and can look forward to next week’s game with their heads held high
The club would like to thank the supporters who braved the elements to watch today’s game and our sponsors the Dunleath for providing the post-game good. The club would also like to wish Ciaran Blake, Steven Mullan and anyone else who picked up a knock a speedy recovery
Up next for Cookstown is a visit to Ballyshannon next Saturday (21st October) with a 2:30pm kick off, all support would be most welcome
