There have been plenty of non-fiction books written about beer and brewing but you’d be hard pressed to come up with a novel that’s got its feet firmly planted under the taproom table. Trouble Brewing by Paul Carroll may finally be the story that beer-drinking book lovers have been waiting to raise a glass to.

Set in the imaginary Yorkshire town of Brimdale Trouble Brewing follows disgraced former celebrity chef Brian Parkin as he leads a campaign to save the Brimdale Brewery and its ‘miracle’ Brim ale from closure. This light-hearted, comic and entertaining read, full of twists and turns, has already been dubbed ‘Ready Steady Cook meets the Full Monty’.

Trouble Brewing certainly has fun with predatory mega-breweries intent on world domination not to mention the Brexit-era uncertainty a tiny brewery like Brimdale has to deal with.

Author Paul Carroll, who was actually born in a pub in Leeds, crams a quirky assortment of characters including a grouchy ex-cricketer, a world champion ferret legger, a historical novelist and a wrestler’s daughter into his imaginary snug.

But he has a warning for readers. ‘Enjoy responsibly. One page may lead to another’.

Trouble Brewing, ISBN: 9781788037327, is available now from Amazon and usual outlets. Paperback is priced at £8.99, E-book at £3.99.
