Rainey Come Out On Top
The Derek Lee Memorial Cup is traditionally contested by Rainey Old Boys and Clogher Valley.  This year, the Fivemiletown club is celebrating its 25th Anniversary and as a one-off invited neighbours Omagh and Enniskillen to participate in a mini tournament.  Played on a round-robin basis, with games lasting 25 minutes, Rainey started poorly, but gradually picked up to beat Omagh Academicals in the final.

 

Ground conditions were top class, as usual, at The Cran where the light rain stayed away for most of the afternoon.  Rainey gave some game time to several new faces, with a couple of last season’s Under 18’s getting their first taste of senior rugby.  The spotlight fell on 21 year old centre Chris Smith, who only arrived in the province late on Friday.  The ex-Southend player, who has relatives in Waterford, has been concentrating on Sevens, playing for the Exiles on the circuit.  He performed well throughout the tournament and could prove to be a useful acquisition should he decide to stay.
