Roesiders Pass High School Test

Limavady 97 Belfast High School Former Pupils 10

For the first time ever, Limavady RFC took part in the Gordon West Cup. This is a cup for all Qualifying three & four teams with the early games played in a round robin format.

Limavady have been drawn in section A. As well as todays opponents, Belfast High School Former Pupils, Ophir and current cup holders and Qualifying section 3 favourites, Larne.

BHSFP are in Q4 and began their league programme last week win a win over Monaghan, so travelled over the Glenshane high in confidence. Limavady on the other hand don’t begin their Q3 league campaign until next week. However, there were no signs of rustiness after the first 15mins as the men in black ran in five tries, including two from the returning Peter Wilson. Despite falling behind 29-0 the Belfast men kept at it and scored two tries of their own.

But as the half wore on the difference in leagues was easy to see and with Limavady dominating in all areas of the field, ran in a further three tries which were all converted to leave the Half time score, Limavady 50 BHSFP 10

The message at half time was to keep the concentration levels high and not let any sloppiness creep into their play, and the message was received as a further seven tries were ran in, with six of them converted.

So 15 tries and 11 conversions is not a bad way to start the season, but Head Coach Paul O’Kane knows sterner tests are around the corner. Next up in the Gordon West Cup is an away trip to Ophir on the 11th October, but next week sees Limavady begin their league programme with a home fixture against Newry with a 2.30pm kick off on Saturday afternoon at the John Hunter Memorial Grounds.

Team: S. Kilburn, T. McClelland, P. Wilson, C. Hunter, S. Roddy, L. Faulkner, B. Wilson. C. Scott, I. Campbell, J. McCollum, M. McCollun, D. Miller, P. Semple, J.King, R. McCollum. Replacements: D. Irvine, J. Miller

The Saracens (3rds) started their league season last week with a great win away to Ballyshannon and this week entertained neighbours Strabane 2nds, and just like the 1sts they also romped home with an easy 78-17.

Other fixtures for next week see the 2nds travel to play Ballynahich 5ths and the Saracens head for Donegal Town to play the host team’s second string.
