We attended on Saturday morning the Portadown v Dromore youth systems, 3 games at 18/16 and 14, then in the afternoon we attended the Gordon West Cup fixture between Lurgan & Newry. Images and Videos + Interviews to follow from these games.

The morning games at Portadown RFC were well attended and all 6 teams were good. In the afternoon the Gordon West Cup game was a fantastic showcase of Club Rugby with both teams playing smart, developed rugby to which both clubs are looking to maintain and develop further through their engagement with local populations in schools and youth rugby. Expansive and fast, the speed of recycling was high, the off load based game and passing game developing at pace, and the counter attack and use of quick penalties, kicking from hand as well as penalties good, hands to the corner, and defensive capability defending successfully against sustained attacks, all a credit to the training, coaching and increased concentration for longer periods during the game, re-organising the line, performance of tackles, work at the set piece scrum and lineout. With player welfare to the fore the referee stopped the game on a couple of occasions to carry out a welfare assessment on a player. The professionalism of both teams was indeed a true showcase of their high performance mindset.

Just you take a look at the results below (all scores not yet finalised chasing a few up). A resounding performance by Ballymena Rugby Club sees them start their UBL campaign from scratch again admittedly after two shocking performances, the All Ireland Cup produced 3 fine wins for Bangor, CIYMS & Clogher Valley who progress to the semis, while in the Gordon West PSNI put 38 on Service, while Lurgan racked up 25+ points (awaiting final score confirmation) on Newry and Monaghan put 41 on Cavan, in Q2 Enniskillen put 57 on Holywood while Omagh put 46 on Grosvenor, in the II XV league City of Derry put 39 on Ards 2s, Dungannon put 30 on Queens 2s and Hinch put 42 on Malone 2s and Queens put 21 on Ballymena 2s, in the Junior Leagues Ballyclare 2s put 43 unanswered points on Grosvenor 2s while Inst2s put 34 on Carrick2s, Bangor 2s put 34 on Omagh 3s, Enniskillen 2s put 39 on Quins, in Minor League East 1 Ards4s put 48 on PSNI 2s, in East 2 Carrick put 34 on Malone, in South Clogher 3s put 27 on Armagh 3s!

Respect for athletes welfare is growing in club rugby and the dedication and training of the players towards this physical game is of a very high standard and is a reflection that these athletes are setting very high standards for themselves.

Gordon
