Eating too much sugary food, consuming to many energy drinks, alcohol and a demanding social life can all lead to a noticeable decline in student’s oral health.

DenTek are on a mission to help students freshen up their smile which will not only reduce the likelihood of an unexpected dentist bill but will also work wonders for your social and dating life. You can thank us later.

A survey* into attraction reveals bad breath is a no-no for the vast majority of British adults looking for a new partner. 85% of single Brits deem it a bigger turn off than bad jokes, terrible dress sense, lateness and even poor manners.

The main cause of bad breath is poor oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth twice a day is crucial but so is cleaning between your teeth. Not using interdental cleaning products allows bits of food to build up between your teeth, encouraging bacteria and plaque to form and resulting in bad breath.

Did you know 77% of tooth decay starts between the teeth but 1 in 3** have never flossed or clean interdentally. A toothbrush alone cleans just 60% of the tooth. To hit the other 40% that the toothbrush can’t reach, oral hygiene products such as DenTek’s floss picks and interdental brushes are a must.

The tongue harbours approximately 50%*** of the bacteria in your mouth and accounts for up to 90% of cases of bad breath. The bottom line is that if you’re not cleaning your tongue, you’re allowing bacteria to have a home in your mouth so the cleaner you keep your tongue the better! Simply use your toothbrush or a tongue cleaner, like DenTek’s Orabrush Tongue Cleaner, to brush the tongue surface for 15-30 seconds after brushing your teeth.
Many common dental issues amongst students are preventable or at least delayable by cleaning your teeth and mouth effectively. By adding interdental and tongue cleaning to your oral hygiene routine, you will keep your money, your smile and potentially, your date.

Dental hygienist, Hannah Ripley, from Zandielle Dental Clinic in Attleborough gives her top 5 tips to keep your teeth healthy if you’re heading off to university:

Avoid snacking on sugary foods. Instead try apples, carrots, celery sticks or hard cheeses
Avoid late night snacking, especially if you’re prone to falling asleep before brushing your teeth
Don’t brush your teeth straight after having fizzy drinks or fruit juices as the acid will soften your enamel. Wait at least 1-2 hours before brushing to give the enamel time to re-harden again
Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water especially if you exercise or consume a lot of caffeinated drinks
Follow DenTek’s Inside, Outside, Upside, Done!” routine. This involves cleaning between the teeth first, followed by the outside (brushing your teeth) and the upside (tongue) but not rinsing.

Jennifer Hudson, Senior Brand Manager at DenTek says, “University is a new and exciting chapter in a young person’s life and Fresher’s Week is a great time for students to get a good oral care routine in place.
