Time for An Idea to Take Shape<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who isn\u2019t looking for ways to distract themselves in this time of coronavirus? I\u2019m writing from the same spot I\u2019ve inhabited each time I\u2019ve drafted a newsletter, but that space won\u2019t look the same once my wallpaper arrives\u2014the 66\u201d x 96\u201d mural I ordered so that my ZOOM, Google Hangout and FaceTime background is more than a green attic wall. I\u2019m also becoming more organized, now that someone on the other end of a call might actually see a cluttered office if I stand up and walk around. I tell myself these actions are necessary; I also know they are good ways to stop myself from listening obsessively to local, national and world news as COVID-19 infection and death counts rise.<\/p>\n

Thank goodness I\u2019ve dreamed up another way to keep myself busy that might also be of interest to you\u2014something I\u2019ve been thinking about that turned into an idea precisely because of the need to shelter in place. In July of 2000, Jenney Egertson met 80-year-old Maude Kelly. The following day, Jenney had an idea: give Maude and a diverse group of women over the age of 80 a voice by writing a book to capture their stories and advice.<\/p>\n

As she interviewed and wrote about her subjects during the fifteen turbulent years that followed, Jenney learned about aging, parenting, facing adversity, navigating systemic racism and sexism, and accepting community.<\/p>\n

Before I Leave follows one woman\u2019s journey from the moment her long-buried dream to become a writer re-emerged, through the fear she felt as she moved through middle age, to the sense of calm and acceptance she came to in her sixties. This is a book to be shared across generations as women everywhere continue to reclaim their lives and voices.<\/p>\n
