{"id":48893,"date":"2013-06-19T20:04:06","date_gmt":"2013-06-19T19:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/?p=48893"},"modified":"2020-10-23T10:55:42","modified_gmt":"2020-10-23T09:55:42","slug":"stellar-year-for-womens-rugby-set-to-climax-at-rwc-sevens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/stellar-year-for-womens-rugby-set-to-climax-at-rwc-sevens\/","title":{"rendered":"Stellar Year for Women\u2019s Rugby Set to Climax at RWC Sevens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A memorable season for women\u2019s Rugby is on track to come to a thrilling conclusion at Rugby World Cup Sevens 2013 in Moscow at the end<br \/>\nof this month when the top 16 Sevens teams will compete for the top prize.<br \/>\n  The women\u2019s competition made its debut at Dubai 2009 and immediately made a big impact with the sheer level of competitiveness and broad<br \/>\ngeographical spread.<br \/>\n  That event, where Australia were crowned champions, demonstrated not only the vast strides made by Rugby but also what additional excitement,<br \/>\ndrama and entertainment Rugby Sevens would bring to the Olympic Games.<br \/>\n  Four years on and Rugby Sevens is now an Olympic sport, gearing up to<br \/>\nthe pinnacle that is Rio 2016 and an opportunity for the best men\u2019s and women\u2019s players to showcase their talent on the world\u2019s biggest sporting<br \/>\nstage.<br \/>\n  There is little doubt that 2013 has been a watershed for the women\u2019s<br \/>\nGame. The successful inauguration of the IRB Women\u2019s Sevens World Series, a global qualification process for Rugby World Cup Sevens and<br \/>\nnew nations qualifying (Fiji, Ireland and Tunisia) have capped a remarkable 12 months that has also seen the IRB step up its development<br \/>\nand administration programmes to ensure that women\u2019s Rugby maximises the Olympic opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>CLICK <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rwcsevens.com\/\">HERE<\/a> FOR INFORMATION ABOUT RWC SEVENS 2013 >><\/p>\n<p>  IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: \u201cThe \u2018Olympic effect\u2019 has been massive and perhaps nowhere has it been felt more keenly than in the<br \/>\nwomen\u2019s Game where participation, awareness and competition have all been boosted.\u201d<br \/>\n  \u201cThere are now more than one million women and girls actively playing Rugby in 118 nations \u2013 a fifth of the total playing population \u2013 while<br \/>\nparticipation is booming in countries such as USA, Brazil, China and the Netherlands.\u201d<br \/>\n  \u201cOf course such strides forward require investment in time, funds and direction and the IRB is committed to ensuring that women\u2019s Rugby<br \/>\ncontinues to thrive and reach out to new players, audiences and commercial partners through its brand of exciting, geographically<br \/>\ndiverse and highly competitive action, underpinned by Rugby\u2019s character-building values.\u201d<br \/>\n   \u201cAll eyes will be on Moscow and I believe that fans will be in for a real treat as we will witness yet another step up in terms of<br \/>\ncompetition and performance.
