While the Newry side possessed some excellent
\nrunners and more than willing tacklers , Armagh were more committed in
\nposession and able to launch their more aggressive runners into space more
\nfrequently which ultimately led to the home sides tries.
\nFrom the kick off Armagh showed their intent with a couple of charges
\nthrough the middle with Claire Wallace, leading the way and setting a fine
\nexample to the rest of the team – from this platform Armagh looked to pass
\nthe ball wide and both wingers frequently made significant inroads. After
\none such move, Naomi Herron cut through three attempted Newry tackles and
\ntouched down beside the posts to open the scoring and, with the try being
\neasily converted by Hannah Watson, Armagh took an early 7-0 lead . Another
\nscore quickly followed when Claire again made great progress from the kick
\noff , and with most of the Newry defence attracted to the contact area , two
\nsimple passes put the Armagh centre,Jenny Wallace,in at the posts . With the
\nconversion again successful Armagh were now 14 points to the good .
\nFollowing a knock on from the restart , Newry established a foothold in
\nArmagh territory and began to exert pressure on the home defence . Through a
\nmixture of excellent tackling and discipline the Armagh line held firm , and
\nwhen Newry kicked slightly long, giving easy possession to Armaghs full back
\nHannah Watson, she was able to launch an effective counter attack where both
\nshe and Estelle Johnson,on debut, made ground down the right wing . After a
\ncouple more phases of possession , Newrys defence was caught out of position
\non the opposite wing and Anna Mae Morton ran under the posts for Armaghs
\nthird try of the night , again converted by the Lady of the Erne . A fourth
\ntry would follow shortly before half time as a concerted period of Armagh
\npossession put repeated pressure on the Newry defence and despite some
\nexcellent tackling and covering from the visitors , the defence simply ran
\nout of bodies .This saw the half time whistle blow with the score at 26-0 in
\nfavour of the home side .
\nThe second half followed a similar pattern with Newry enjoying quite a bit
\nof possession and territorial dominance . However , a lack of experience and
\ncomposure showed at times and Newry weren`t able to turn their dominance
\ninto points . On the occcasion where Armagh did get the ball they made more
\nground and were simply more clinical . They also proved that there is no
\nsubstitute for sheer pace when Anna Mae took advantage of broken field
\npossession and a tiring Newry side to break away for another try , securing
\nthe bragging rights over her brother who had only managed one score that
\nafternoon against Dungannon.
\n With only one other score coming towards the end of the game the final
\nscore was 38-0 to Armagh . Great credit goes to both teams for a very
\nentertaining match , watched by a sizeable crowd who were drawn away from
\nthe Ulster\/Munster game to support both sides . Despite the scoreline Newry
\ndeserve great credit for all their efforts and should be very encouraged by
\nmany aspects of their play .
\n From an Armagh perspective , it is a shame that we cannot regularly field a
\nsenior ladies side , but the example set by the team in this game was an
\nexcellent one for the watching juniors who will form a senior side in the
\nnear future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Armagh Ladies Rugby I XV v Newry Ladies Rugby I XV CLICK HERE for the rugbyfest shots Coordinator & Ulster Rugby Provincial I XV player Zoe Templetong InTouch TV Interview to follow Armagh Ladies made a welcome return to the pitch over the Xmas break when they took on Newry under floodlights at the Palace […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[17191,5774,4720,3959],"class_list":["post-39563","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-armagh","tag-armagh","tag-city","tag-ladies","tag-rugby"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39563","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=39563"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39563\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":39565,"href":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39563\/revisions\/39565"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=39563"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=39563"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=39563"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
