Klein Master Photographer."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><b>DISCOVERING YOURSELF &amp;<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><b>EXPANDING LUCK<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">January, 1956 marked the end of my 4 year service career.\u00a0 It was the beginning of the \u201cSpace Race,\u201d and I was in Orlando, FL, fifty miles from Cape Canaveral.\u00a0 I saw an AD in the Sunday newspaper \u201cwant ad section\u201d for motion picture photographers to work at\u00a0 the Cape, tracking rocket launches.\u00a0 Motion picture photography was right up my alley.\u00a0 I had all that experience from my photo unit in the AF.\u00a0 I applied and got the job.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Right about that time the Martin Aircraft Co., (today it\u2019s called Lockheed Martin Co.), started building a new plant in Orlando.\u00a0 I had worked at the cape, tracking a variety of rocket launches, putting more than 100 miles a day on my used auto.\u00a0 Before the new plant was completely constructed, they began putting out feelers for local talent in our local newspaper \u201cWant Ad Section.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-203007\" src=\"http:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/540.jpg\" alt=\"540\" width=\"408\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/540.jpg 408w, https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/540-55x55.jpg 55w, https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/540-300x294.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">On a Sunday morning I saw the ad, for motion picture photographers, to begin working at the Martin Co., right in Orlando, only a few miles from my apartment. Once more I applied and got the job, only now at a higher pay scale.\u00a0 I had been promoted to documentary film making.\u00a0 Now I did NOT have to track rockets, but now our crew had to actually film the story of how rockets were constructed and how they were launched.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Several months into the job, a writer from the recruiting department came into our offices looking for a still photographer.\u00a0 Everyone, on my crew, looked in my direction.\u00a0 The writer needed a photographer to make pictures for advertising purposes to attract more engineers to work at the Company.\u00a0 I was assigned to him, for a period of 30 days, to make pictures in B&amp;W and Color, of engineers at work.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><b>This was a challenge!<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">He told me he did not want these pictures to be, \u201cRun of the Mill\u201d type photographs, but something really special that would be attractive, to a college graduate in the field of engineering.\u00a0 Again I was assigned with a 4\u201d X 5\u201d press camera with multiple flash equipment.\u00a0 Now I was in charge of developing and printing my own B&amp;W film and making prints of the negatives, and also processing my own color sheet film.\u00a0 Nothing could\u00a0 be sent out for processing because of the nature of the subject matter.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Each situation was now a SUPER challenge!\u00a0 There were several departments within the plant that offered extremely interesting subject matter.\u00a0 The writer and I worked together daily, carefully weighing our options on capturing that mysterious and illusive quality called <b>\u201cIMPACT!\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">One department in particular gave us an opportunity, which did NOT reveal itself immediately, but after examining all the angles and options, looked as if it had startling potential!\u00a0 I asked the engineer, operating the component \u201cflight simulator\u201d tester, if it was possible to attach small lights to the extreme corners of the triple rocker tables of the device.\u00a0 He agreed that he could, but we would have to return the next day after he completed the request.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">I had remembered seeing night pictures of city lights and roadways with moving cars, during a long exposure, and the streaking designs of the lights from automobiles. The engineer attached red, green, and clear christmas bulbs and had concealed the wiring.\u00a0 I had a flash attachment I could remove from the camera and\u00a0 stretch the cord several feet to the right and attach it to a separate stand, and direct it at the engineer seen in the picture.\u00a0 The room would be completely darkened, with the exception of the small illuminated bulbs, on the moving device, the camera mounted on a tripod, to keep it steady, the shutter was opened for a long 15 second time exposure, then the flash was tripped when the engineer looked directly at the camera. This action created a multi-color-light pattern design in the picture.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">The resulting 4\u201d X 5\u201d inch\u00a0 positive transparent color film picture was circulated to the entire staff of the department, with a resulting <b>\u201cAFFIRMATIVE\u201d<\/b> for use in a national recruitment poster.\u00a0 We had now achieved a picture with real \u201c<b>PURPOSE!\u201d<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">This same image and a few other images from the month long session can be seen by going to:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; letter-spacing: 0px;\">http:\/\/raymondjklein.com\/<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Then click on the GALLERY section, then on the INDUSTRIAL group and review the multi-color-light pattern image by clicking on\u00a0 that individual image to enlarge the view. Here you can see the entire recruiting color poster displayed.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">The reproduction of the poster and the image, was used for recruiting engineers to the Martin Co. It was sent to many universities in the nation, and reproduced in newspapers in many states.\u00a0 Our Nation was now moving quickly into the \u201cSpace Race.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">The moving light technique would remain in my arsenal of tricks for years to come.\u00a0 In 2015, now as a member of an Art Gallery with a commitment toward education, I assembled a device to illustrate the \u201cMAGIC\u201d of using a single small moving light, and a long time exposure photography of the subject, much to the amazement of the grade school children.\u00a0 See the link below as an example:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbian.com\/news\/2015\/nov\/05\/volunteer-blends-photography-science-to-teach-boys-girls-club-kids\/\">http:\/\/www.columbian.com\/news\/2015\/nov\/05\/volunteer-blends-photography-science-to-teach-boys-girls-club-kids\/<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">You can see the similarity in the technique used to produce the light pattern for the Martin Co. poster, and the light pattern I would be able to teach young students many years later.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><b>Let\u2019s go<\/b> b<b>ack now to 1958<\/b>, and a portfolio of B&amp;W prints and Color reproductions of color transparent film, and a hand full of printed advertisements.\u00a0<b> I could once again explore my LUCK!<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">During a vacation to Chicago, I was greeted with a strong welcome to become employed with a top Art and Advertising Studio in downtown Chicago.\u00a0 <b>I accepted the job! \u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>A whole new adventure was about to begin<\/b>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Raymond J.
