{"id":11620,"date":"2011-03-31T22:04:50","date_gmt":"2011-03-31T22:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/?p=11620"},"modified":"2011-03-31T23:19:38","modified_gmt":"2011-03-31T23:19:38","slug":"ulster-rugby-announce-new-signing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/ulster-rugby-announce-new-signing\/","title":{"rendered":"Ulster Rugby Announce New Signing:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ulster Rugby today announced that they have signed Jared Payne, from the Auckland Blues on a three year contract.<\/p>\n<p>A former New Zealand U21 international, Payne made his Super Rugby debut for the Waikato Chiefs in 2007 before spending two years with the Canterbury Crusaders. He joined the Auckland Blues earlier this year ahead of the start of the Super Rugby tournament and has captained his province, Northland, in the ITM Cup, New Zealand\u2019s domestic championship, since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>A versatile back, Payne has the ability to play at either win, centre or full-back<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurosportsdirect.com\/index.asp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9533\" title=\"Click Here For Eurosports Direct E-Commerce Website\" src=\"http:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/rooooon21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"943\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nUlster\u2019s Director of Rugby, David Humphreys commented<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJared has made a big impact in the Super Rugby competition so far this season, His ability to play a number of different positions in the back-line and the experience he has gained in leading Northland in the ITM Cup means that he will fit very well with the profile of our squad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Payne, who has started all six of the Blues\u2019 Super Rugby matches so far this season says;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d always thought that I\u2019d like the chance to play abroad at some stage in my career. I didn\u2019t think that chance would come up as early as it has but I\u2019m delighted to have signed for Ulster\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve spoken with David (Humphreys) at length about the rugby set-up and have certainly been impressed by what they\u2019re trying to achieve and how they\u2019re going about it, but I\u2019ve also talked to some friends from outside rugby circles about what life in Northern Ireland will be like and I\u2019m really looking forward to arriving in Belfast\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve really enjoyed captaining Northland and feel that the extra responsibility is good for my personal game, I thrive on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m aware that Ulster have a fairly young group of backs coming through and I\u2019m keen to be involved in helping with their development.
