{"id":10147,"date":"2011-02-28T12:05:11","date_gmt":"2011-02-28T12:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/?p=10147"},"modified":"2011-02-28T12:06:44","modified_gmt":"2011-02-28T12:06:44","slug":"grand-slam-legend-kicks-off-ulster-museum-lectures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/grand-slam-legend-kicks-off-ulster-museum-lectures\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand slam legend kicks off Ulster Museum lectures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rugby legend Jack Kyle will be the first in a diverse range of speakers in this year\u2019s Northern Bank Ulster Museum Lecture Series next month.<br \/>\nBest known as one of Ireland\u2019s Grand Slam heroes of 1948, Jack Kyle has experienced what can only be described as an amazing and awe inspiring journey through life.<\/p>\n<p>On March 10, in conversation with BBC sports presenter Stephen Watson, he will discuss the career which led to him being voted Ireland\u2019s greatest ever rugby player in 2002.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/inpho_00169395.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/inpho_00169395.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"inpho_00169395\" width=\"250\" height=\"359\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10149\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When he retired from international rugby in 1958, his total of 46 caps from 11 seasons, which yielded seven tries, was a world record.<br \/>\nHis list of honours includes a Triple Crown in 1949 and as a British Lion in 1950 he mesmerised the All Blacks to such an extent that he is still revered to this day in New Zealand.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/rooooon2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9533\" title=\"Click Here For Eurosports Direct E-Commerce Website\" src=\"http:\/\/www.intouchrugby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/rooooon2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"943\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBut Jack Kyle the sportsman is only part of the story.  When his playing days ended, the Queen\u2019s university medicine graduate travelled to Indonesia to work as a surgeon for two years, before taking up a position in Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>For over three decades his home was Chingola, a mining town in the north of the African country, where he was the only surgeon for miles around.<br \/>\nIn 2007 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Irish Journal of Medical Science and the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland for his outstanding humanitarian work.
