Ladies Rugby Continues to Grow in Cavan

On Thursday 25^th February Virginia RFC hosted approximately 100 Secondary School Girls from across Cavan playing Tag Rugby in the Ulster Girls Schools Cup. Virginia College, St Clares Ballyjamesduff, The Royal School, Loretto College and St Bricins Belturbet all entered teams along with Bailieborough Community College who entered a remarkable three teams. Bailieborough and the Royal also played each other in a 7-a-side contact match .

The 7-a-side element was introduced this year to the Girls Schools Cup, with teams made up of Senior girls playing in a National competition starting in April. This match was also a great way for these two fine teams to showcase their skills to the other Schools Tag Rugby teams that were made up of mainly Junior Girls.

A lot of fun was had by all with some fantastic Rugby being played. The day was organised by Jon Watt , Ulster Club Community Rugby Officer for Virginia RFC. Pat Mullen, Hugh Brady and Sharon Higgins from the Virginia RFC Ladies section were all in attendance to help out and spot any up and coming talent, along with Wilson Green helping to ensure the day went as planned.

Zoe Templeton, Ulster Community Rugby Lead for the South of the Province, was also in attendance and was very impressed with the standard of play and the overall positive attitude of the players.

Bailieborough, Royal, St Bricins and Loreto will now go onto the quarter-final/ semi-final stage at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena in Cookstown on 8th March.

Under 15 Girls welcome Dungannon to Virginia

The Virginia U15 girls enjoyed a home game on Sunday afternoon with the Dungannon girls.  Althought the visitiors had only seven girls, the two teams agreed to merge together and mix up the teams to play a friendly match.  It was a beautiful sunny Spring afternoon and was enjoyed by all the supporters who came along to watch the game.  The girls showed excellent displays of talent both individually and as a team and it was great to see the girls working together and getting on so well.  This is what rugby is all about..having fun and enjoying the game.  Next weekend sees the girls heading to Armagh for their next league match.
