Tir Chonaill RFC Club News: BEACH TAG FESTIVAL & Rugby Club Dinner: Report + Pictures

Tir Chonaill RFC Kick Off Donegal Summer Tag Rugby Season with Beach Tag Festival
Seven Teams gathered at the Blue Flag Carrickfin Beach on Saturday last to take part in the first Tag Rugby competition of the Summer Season. In conjunction with the Annnagry Festival, and with a Winners trophy sponsored by Donegal Airport, the tournament was hosted by Tir Chonaill RFC who are now a well established club on the Donegal Rugby scene despite their tender years. Prior to the Senior competition, the kids had a warm up game which was repeated later in the day. The kids had a ball on the Beach all day despite the low temperature. The seven senior teams taking part were as follows :-
• Tir Chonaill Chiefs
• Tir Chonaill Squaws
• Finn Valley
• Inishowen
• Letterkenny Ballhogs
• Letterkenny Costa Ricans
• Big Bicep Super Tag Select (Letterkenny)

A series of exciting games ensued with 2 leagues leading to a final and a playoff for 3rd between the 2nd teams in the leagues. The Ballhogs won League 1 with runners up Finn Valley. League 2 was won by the curiously named Big Bicep Super Tag Select with definitely too many adjectives but some superb rugby, and runners up Inishowen.

The 3rd v 4th game was won by Finn Valley with a great performance, and they are a force to be reckoned with in future competition. The Final was won in an extremely tight and slightly controversial game by the Biceptuals captained by Brian McCrory. Team members were Daire Nolan, Conall Sheridan, Niall O’Gorman, Jamie Boyle, Jaryd Bennett, Ciaran Clarke, Hannah Watson and Laura Mills. Some superb tag rugby was on show in this game, and the 2 teams have set the bar for the others throughout the Summer. The trophy was presented to the Winners in Aerfort Dhún na nGall and a few hard earned beers were welcome in the bar there. A great day and thanks to all w played, refereed, organised, watched, flipped burgers or participated in any way. A few Euro was raised for the club, but more importantly everyone had fun.
Tir Chonaill welcomes all down to Tag rugby games on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. We particularly welcome more girls (of all ages) to make up teams and note that female players score 3 points for a try as opposed to 1 for men.
Tir Chonaill Dinner Dance : Our Annual Dinner Dance will be held in Caisleáin óir Hotel on this Saturday 18th June. Tickets are still on sale and a limited number will be available at the door. To be sure of a seat, contact Eugene Doogan on 0866086248 to reserve tickets which cost a recession busting € 25 each. Peanuts for what promises to be a great nights craic.
