Sir Ian McGeechan talks to New Zealand’s Steve Hansen about coaching the world’s best team

Former British and Irish Lions coach meets the man behind the greatest Test team of all time, to discover how the All Blacks changed how rugby union is played

The last time I had the chance to chat rugby with Steve Hansen, we were on an Air New Zealand flight to Auckland for an International Rugby Board conference after the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Hansen was coaching Wales and I was coaching Scotland, and we talked about how the game might move forward in the northern hemisphere, about how fitness, lifestyle and skill levels simply had to improve.
Well, much has happened since then. Hansen was assistant coach to Graham Henry when New Zealand won the 2011 RWC and has since taken over as head coach. Remarkably, he has lost just two Tests in 39 since then.
