Shannons Corner, Ballyshannon, Superb Home Cooked Food in Co Donegal

On a bright sunny morning the first of June we travelled to
Ballyshannon to visit the famous Assarroe Abbey and St. Patrick’s Holy
Well. We explores the historic Cistercian ruins with the lovely Abbey
River running through them and toured the lovely countryside and
sea.shore. By mid day we were getting hungry, ‘it’s the fresh sea
air’, we were told by a local, and we were directed to Shannons Corner
Restaurant, ‘by popular demand’.

Shannons Corner Restaurant is a bright two storied building with
Georgian windows and flower pots on very window sill. As we entered we
were warmly greeted by the owner Mary to a large farmhouse style
dining area with stone flag floors and walls adorned with country
crafts and portraits of local characters including the famous Rory
Gallagher, who’s annual festival is comming up this weekend. We were
seated on comfortable crafted wooded tables and chairs beside a stone
built open fire place which added to the relaxed atmosphere with
mighty ‘craic’ from the local characters.

We dined from a varied menu of salmon, gammon, turkey and ham and
freshly caught cod and haddock from nearby Killybegs and with all the
trimmings of potatoes, brocoli carrots and parsnips mashed just like
mammy used to make! The large portioned were served on piping hot
plates, a must for my husband. Those of us who had room followed it
all with home made deserts of apple pie or crumble, cherry trifle with
custard and cream washed down with mugs full of perked coffee and all
served by a friendly curteous staff.

As we left Shannons Corner Restaurant we were already planning our
return visit, and ran into a couple of regulars who had journeyed from
Enniskillen just to dine at this charming popular spot.
