Omagh 4th XV travelled to Ballinahinch on Saturday and came away with a deserved win despite playing the game with 14 men.
Although cold the game was played in good conditions and although Omagh had to shuffle their team with Porter slotting into the backrow and the versatile Hill going to outhalf, it wasn’t long before Omagh got on the scoresheet, with Harpur
leading the way from 5 metres out and taking several ‘Hinch players with him for the ride to score close to the posts. Mitchell converted. With Hill pulling the strings in midfield with some charging runs it wasn’t long before omagh scored again. After slick hands in the backs a penalty was given short of the line, the ever alert Mark Neill tapped and fed Mitchell who unbelievably squeezed through the narrowest of gaps to score under the posts and converted to leave Omagh 14-0. The next score came straight of the training park, from a scrum at halfway the ball was fed to Neill who in turn passed to Hill who hit the ball at such pace, he totally outstripped to ‘Hinch defence to score in the corner. Half time score 19-0. After halftime deliberations, ‘Hinch brought a player on and got their tails up and secured a score through their backs. Soon after Omagh got into their rhythm again and after some interesting 7’s play between Crosbie and Mitchell, although not gaining much territory, it did release Armstrong with the opportunity to score, but unfortunately while thinking on his try celebration touched down passed the dead ball line. The it was Porters turn for the headlines, a searing break by Mitchell sent Porter clear with the line at his mercy he took a fear of heights and instead of diving to score he attempted a Samoan sidestep and got held up short of the line. The next score came from good work by the pack to set up Neill with a break and slip the ball inside for Mitchell to score unconverted. With the game nearly over Omagh had time for couple
more scorse. After a series of penalties and pressure on the line, Burnside took quick tap and dived into score. The next came after Crosbie received the ball, pirouetted and sucked in the defence before slipping the ball to McSorely to score a converted try. Final score 36-5. The players who stood out were Hill whose searing tackles and line breaks kept Omagh going forward, while Harpur and Crosbie carried the ball well up front. Mitchell had mixed fortunes with the boot and maybe after some time spent on the training pitch could improve. All in all a great team performance.
