New book explains the science of rugby.

New book explains the science of rugby. The science behind rugby is tackled in a new book edited by two leading sports science experts at the University of Chester.

The Science of Rugby, co-edited by Dr Craig Twist and Dr Paul Worsfold from the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, examines the scientific principles underpinning the preparation of rugby players for high performance.

From strength and power training and match-day strategies for enhancing physical and technical performance, to nutrition and biomechanics, the book draws on the very latest scientific evidence.

It covers both Union and League codes and explores every aspect of preparation and performance that introduces best practice by leading coaches and sports science professionals from around the rugby world.

It includes several case-studies to demonstrate how scientific principles have been applied in practice and bridges the gap between theory and applied practice in rugby, from grass roots level to elite international standard.

Key topics covered include:

Physical preparation and conditioning;

Strength and power training;

Monitoring match and training demands;

Match-day strategies for enhancing physical and technical performance;

Management of fatigue and recovery;

Training and playing in the heat;

Travel and jet lag;

Injury epidemiology;

Psychological preparation;

Performance analysis;

Biomechanics;

Nutrition;

Talent identification and youth development.

Dr Twist, Reader in Applied Exercise Physiology, said: “Our aim was to produce a book that would appeal not only to academics and students, but also applied practitioners, coaches and players. Through our own research and applied work, Paul and I were able to ask some leading names from rugby to contribute to what we believe is the first text bringing together a range of scientific disciplines aimed at optimising performance in rugby. The feedback we’ve had so far has been very positive.”

Dr Worsfold, Senior Lecturer in Sports Biomechanics and Performance Analysis, added: “With the technical, tactical and physical demands of the game notably changing over recent years, there has been an increase in research in many areas of the sport. Through compiling world-leading research into the game, the book offers a unique insight into the world of rugby explaining how science translates into performance.”
