Local loaf gets makeover of the century

Portadown based Irwin’s Bakery has repackaged its ‘hero product’, the Nutty Krust loaf, to mark its 100th year in business. Now in the third generation of the Irwin’s family, the business continues to expand across the UK and Ireland through its range of both traditional and modern baked goods.

The Nutty Krust loaf is one of Irwin’s core product lines. Developed by the company in Northern Ireland in the 1960s, the ‘batch bread’ is made using the same traditional fermentation process as it was back then, giving it a unique taste and texture, and is now sold by Irwin’s in major supermarkets throughout Great Britain and Ireland.

“Nutty Krust is one of our major success stories, having become an iconic Northern Ireland product over the years,” said Michael Murphy, Irwin’s Bakery Commercial Director.

“Our 100th anniversary is a great opportunity to celebrate the successes of our past and importantly build on our strategy to take Irwin’s into the next hundred years. It is very encouraging that whilst our product range expands and develops with modern technology, demand for traditional lines such as Nutty Krust also continues to grow.”
