The only problem with being a trailblazer is that everyone starts copying you, and what was once unique suddenly become run of the mill. The more it happens, the less you end up liking it. I am thinking beards, tattoo sleeves and Justin Bieber singing. But there is also something in rugby that has got me shouting at the television on match days.
Perversely it is the piece of genius that turned rugby defence on its head, the ‘choke tackle ‘of Les Kiss, the Ireland defence coach. I loved this technique. In the lead up to the 2011 World Cup, he caused a seismic shift in how teams operated, refining and expanding on techniques that had been in use for decades but putting them to ruthless and targeted effect.
