“I Can’t Spake” Legendary Rugby Commentary Immortalised As New Lift Voiceover

* Castleford Tigers legend Mick Morgan becomes the permanent voice of lift at Xscape Yorkshire

The voice behind a legendary piece of rugby league commentary, described as ‘the most famous and most quoted in history’, will now greet visitors using the lift at Xscape Yorkshire – excerpts from Mick Morgan’s internationally renowned dialogue have been rerecorded and added to the automatic lift announcements.

Having been viewed millions of times online and across social media channels, phrases from the ex-Castleford Tigers and England player’s 1994 commentary have become famous soundbites around the world.

Some of the phrases from the infamous Cup Final commentary – “I can’t spake”, “They don’t like it”, “Get ‘em walkin’” and “come on Cas, rub it in” – has been immortalised inside the lift at Xscape.

The new lift announcements:
* “Ground Floor, I can’t spake”
* “Doors Opening – going up. It’s the best lift in the world, never mind anybody else”
* “Doors Closing. They don’t like it”
* “First Floor. Get ’em walkin’”
* “Doors Opening – going down. Come on Cas rub it in”

Jason Warren, Centre Director at Xscape Yorkshire, said: “We’re all about celebrating what makes this county special, and for the people of Castleford you won’t find anyone more special and Yorkshire than Mick Morgan.

“His famous cup final commentary truly is one of the best and the phrases have gone on to be heard around the world, shared by generations of sports fans way beyond just those following rugby league.

“We hope Mick’s voice and excerpts from that famous match commentary bring even more joy to people as we immortalise them here in our lift.”

Mick Morgan said: “I’ve commentated on plenty over the years, but I never thought I’d end up being the voice of a lift! It’s a bit of fun, and if it gets people smiling while they’re going between floors then that’s good with me. I can’t spake… but this might just be the best lift in the world.”

To celebrate the launch, Xscape Yorkshire created limited-edition commemorative “I can’t spake” scarves that were given away free, giving visitors the chance to take home a keepsake marking the occasion.

The voice installation complements the striking lift artwork already in place at Xscape Yorkshire. Leeds artist Nicolas Dixon’s vibrant mural, Everything in its Right Place, celebrates Yorkshire through colourful interpretations of local landmarks and hometown heroes, including Henry Moore, Viv Nicholson and Castleford Tigers.

By adding Mick’s unmistakable voice to the experience, Xscape Yorkshire continues to celebrate the people, culture and character that make Yorkshire unique – bringing local pride, humour and personality to an everyday journey and proving that even the lifts can find their voice.
