Glasgow Warriors call for action after Mark Bennett is knocked out by choke tackle in Pro12 defeat by Ulster

In the wake of their 29-19 defeat by Ulster in Belfast on Saturday evening, Glasgow Warriors officials are waiting to hear if further action is to be taken over the second-half incident that led to centre Mark Bennett being given lengthy treatment on the pitch before being taken off on a stretcher.

It was alleged by some in the Glasgow camp that Bennett, 21, lost consciousness after being tackled around his neck. The match was stopped for around seven minutes while he was treated.

Irish sides have developed the so‑called choke tackle as a means of winning turnovers. Rather than putting a tackled player on the ground for a ruck, they try to keep him on his feet and prevent the release of the ball. Technically, this creates a maul, and possession is then handed over to the defending side.
