Fiji and NZ lead way as quarter-finals set at Hong Kong Sevens

– Fiji and NZ lead march to Cup quarter-finals
– Portugal and Canada impress to make last eight
– Brazil and Russia among eight to keep core team hopes alive

After two days of pool play at the Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens the knock-out draws have been set in both the main Cup competition and the Series core team qualifier.

Inspired by countryman Waisale Serevi’s emotional induction into the IRB Hall of Fame, defending champions Fiji matched New Zealand in winning all three of their pool games, while two of this season’s Cup winners, England and South Africa, failed to reach the last eight. Instead, Canada will line up in the quarters against Wales, impressive Portugal will face Kenya, defending champions Fiji will play a resurgent Australia and Series leaders New Zealand will face Samoa.

Eight keep alive hopes of core team status

Outside the main Cup competition, eight sides have kept alive their hopes of gaining core team status on the 2013/14 HSBC Sevens World Series by making the quarter finals of the Series pre-qualifying competition being played in Hong Kong. The winners of the four quarter-final matches on Sunday will book their places in the promotion / relegation play-off finale in London in May.

RWC Sevens hosts Russia, Japan and Tonga all scored three wins in pool play, while Brazil also impressed to keep alive their hopes. Russia now face Uruguay, Zimbabwe line up against the Brazilians, Tonga will play Tunisia and Japan will face Georgia.

After five rounds of the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series New Zealand lie first in the standings on 96 points followed by South Africa (73), Samoa (71), Fiji (66), France (59) and Kenya (57).
